Upcoming Hatchings:
Copper Laanasuth
Copper Zelsk

With two clutches hardening on the Hatching Sands the big question seemed to be: which will hatch first?

The answer came in short order with Copper Zelsk's clutch breaking shell moments before Copper Laanasuth's. With so many eggs surely the dual hatching offers hope to the numerous Candidates who fill Dalibor's ranks. Only time will show who will come away with a lifemate of their very own...

... and who will forfeit their life in hopes of Impression.

They were not meeting in the barracks nor in the weyrbowl itself, instead he had called his small class to the mouth that led from the bowl to the wherhandler tunnels. There were plenty of wherholes hidden within the dimly lit corridors and he’d spent the last few days walking them through the maze so they knew which were empty and where the more important wherholes were - such as Norla’s, Der’s, and Oreanda’s. Swithin had not warned them that some of this information would be needed for their upcoming lesson but he hoped that at least some of them had paid attention. When they were all there he began, ”This won’t be new to you, not in the least bit since you were all there at Crescent.” Their whers were no longer little babies who needed constant attention in order to be properly cared for. In a few seasons they would be proper handlers and while he knew there was plenty they still needed to learn he also felt that first hand experience taught them far more than he ever could. Nonetheless he continued on with the lesson, as they’d only had a slight taste of what might be expected of them come graduation. ”You saw well as I did how things were handled and heard about the consequences others are faced with when a handler dies while his wher lives.” They had spent the entirety of the evening in the mouth of the mines but there had been plenty enough for them to see and hear from there. ”So the lesson today is, don’t die.”

Swisk paced slowly in front of the wherlings each step a jarring affair thanks to the injuries he had sustained all those turns ago. If anyone knew the cost of survival it was the blue. Looking from each human to their bonded as he walked he suddenly stopped and made his way back to Swithin so the man could loop what appeared to be thick belts around his neck. Each belt rang out a symphony as it was moved and when the blue turned back towards the wherlings it became apparent why as each of the belts had upon it a number of metal bells. Clasping his hands together Swithin watched as his wher stopped in front of the first wherling pair, ”Each of you needs a belt. Don’t care how you wear it - ‘round your neck, over the shoulder, on your waist. Just has to be on you in some manner.” Once the belts were passed out Swisk returned to his bonded, ”It won’t always be rocks you’re rescuing others from. There may be enemies - surely you all know about the Palefolk and the Traditionalists. They weren’t likely the only ones on Pern to have some kind of beef with the Weyr and since you wear the Weyr’s colors that means they’d be out to get you too.” He waited for their minds to wrap around the idea that they may have a target on their back simply because they had Impressed.

”Moving without being seen or heard is a skill you will be honing from now until you graduate. Communicating with your wher while in a stressful situation is something you’ll practice from now until the day you die. In that regard I’ve enlisted the aid of other handlers and have a list of items you will fetch for me. If you’re spotted or heard there will be consequences. For now they are not lethal but once you have left the safety of lessons and face the real world they very well could be. Be quick but careful. You may work as a group or on your own.”

Swithin watched as each of his charges fitted the belt on their person. ”A rock with three lines etched onto the surface, a metal mug, and a metal bangle. You know, one of those things women like to wear around their wrists.” He listed off each item he needed from them and then smirked as he gave the likely locations for them, ”Alphahandler Norla’s quarters. Prideleader Vessa’s old quarters across from the men’s bath. And in the tunnels leading towards the barracks you call home.” Waving his hands at them his expression turned solemn, ”Remember, the consequences are not lethal but they are real. Don’t be seen. Don’t be heard. Don’t get caught.”

They presented themselves to the wherlingmaster, whom Raela had come to accept even if she didn't necessarily feel an affinity towards the man. He was their leader, for the moment, and therefore she would listen. She stood, fingers entwined lightly and her expression calm. Everything the man said made sense. Where she had been born, she'd been born with a target on her back. She had been taught from the moment she had first learned to walk how to take her steps lightly. How to avoid detection. Nothing else in her life made as much sense as the instructions she had just received. Raela naturally gravitated to the shadows, she felt most at home creeping and watching.

They could work as a group but that was something Raela had still not quite gotten the hang of. The woman preferred to work alone for the most part. However it would be easier for each of them to go after one thing.
Raela says we will take Norla's quarters.

Since making the leather straps for their whers, Raela had developed something of a cloak for Raelsk. His colour had always been something that had concerned her and now she was vindicated in her decision. His hide was covered by a somewhat tight fitting suit of sorts, concealing most of the green and as the instructions were given, Raela bent and felt the dirt. It would be enough to cover any additional parts of the wher.
First cover hide and now make Raelsk filthy. Raela owe Raelsk a long wash once this is done.
Yes. She answered as she began covering any visible parts with the dirt and mud until she was certain he was mostly covered.

The woman paused a moment.
I know you like to play games but this is serious to me. If you care one jot about us, you will listen without question to every command I give.
The wher seemed to stand still a moment as he considered her words before shifting his gaze to her.
Well, if Raela insist.
Yet she could tell that he was serious. Raelsk would listen to her this time without question. The rules hadn't been totally set out but as soon as they were permitted to leave, Raela sent her firelizard an image of Norla's room whilst she put one shoulder through the bells. Swithin had not specifically barred use of pets and Raela had learned long ago that it was better to play the rules set out than to ask questions and find out that a plan would not work. Better to ask forgiveness than permission, after all. Besides, if this were indeed the real world then she would absolutely be using Cenai.

The black betweened and appeared opposite the room in question, hiding in a shadowy corner and sent an image back to his bonded. If the coast were clear, he would indicate that Raela could begin moving into the handler barracks, Raelsk following close behind and following her lead. They knew which wherholes were empty and should Cenai indicate that someone was on their way, they would move into an empty one to wait. Raela's ears were straining and she instructed Raelsk to do the same, to listen carefully for any movement.

She was silent and moved with grace, quickly yet not making a sound, isolating her upper body in such a way that the bells would not move. It was the one thing she felt totally confident about. The one thing she knew she would be able to do. If the coast were clear, she would instruct Cenai to creep closer until she was certain that Norla was out of the room.

The belt was going to be the problem. Navigating in the dark was easy - He had been good enough at that before Vatask and now? Well, it was laughable in his not-so-humble opinion. Vatalian took pride in his craft and his craft was rocks and dark tunnels and, now, Vatask.

He accepted the belt with a nod at Swisk and looped it around his chest like a bandoleer, deciding that it would be the best place to muffle the bells. Vatask inspected him, her own gaudy decor left in their room. Keep bells quiet. We will sneak. Bangle first. Vatalian nodded his agreement and the pair moved off, moving through the darkness with ease.

Now and then he made himself stop and reorient with Vatask's help, and let her go ahead more than once, never too far from him, but following behind with a hand on her tail and the other holding the bells as still as he could manage. They were the annoying part of this task, as he supposed they were meant to be.

Any luck?
Think over there. Let's go. Something shiny. Maybe trap?
Maybe, be careful.

They crept towards the bangle, Vatask first with Vatalian not far behind, one arm holding the bells tight to his chest.

Clever as it was to send a firelizard as look out it would only do the pair any good if they knew what they were looking for. They might be watching for the woman, but Norla was nowhere to be seen in her large quarters. She’d left a quarter candlemark before to grab a bite to eat after laying the bangle out in the open. So it was not the woman herself they needed to be on the lookout for - just because she was gone didn’t mean the coast was clear.

Renly and Gaius had been left behind to watch for anyone creeping about. They were nestled in alcoves provided by the uneven stone walls, quietly watching and waiting. The blue loved games and to him this was all one big game - the burgundy wasn’t much of a fan of anything except His and only did this task at her bidding. The two firelizards were not the only lookouts though. Norla was usually seen with her bronze in tow and she was counting on that known fact to throw the wherlings off. Norsk was in fact not with his handler but instead he was partially obscured by Norla’s desk within her office space. While he could not fit beneath it he could use it as cover, the rest of his bronze form cloaked in shadows thanks to the heavy hide that had been drawn across the opening that separated the main living quarters from Norla’s office. He lay in wait to see who might be foolish enough to try and take the metal bangle resting on top of the chest in her room.

The trio of guardians were not left waiting for long as Vatalian and Vatask made their approach for the bangle. With his wher leading the way they were getting rather close. A sound, it may have been the settling of the bells on the man’s chest or maybe the click of claws on stone, alerted the bronze to the fact he was no longer alone. A soft growl came from the shadows of Norla’s office and then Gaius dove from his spot on the wall with a screech. Wings fluttered as he pulled up in time to avoid collision with a warble that almost sounded like he was amused by the situation. Well then, they weren’t going to be getting the bangle. At least not yet.

A tutt of annoyance escaped Raela and she ducked into one of the empty rooms when she received the image from her firelizard.
You told Vatask we were going to Norla's quarters right? She demanded of her wher.
Did tell. Maybe not hear... Raelsk responded but she could tell that he hadn't deliberately disobeyed her. Thinking fast, Raela decided this would not necessarily be a problem. Not really. Cenai had alerted her to the presence of some firelizards outside the door. There was every possibility that something more could have been in the room.

Vatask, Mine urge caution. Firelizards watch door. Careful. Think something more be inside.
Well, she wasn't about to make this trip totally worthless. Raela switched targets. There was nothing more she could do to help if Vatalian and Vatask had decided to go after Norla's bangle. She sent an image to her firelizard of Vessa's quarters. They abandoned the plan and Cenai flew to the men's baths as silent as he could manage. Then he took up a position above the alcove whilst Raela waited.

What were they supposed to do in this situation? She was certain that Vatalian and Vatask could be in theoretical danger. Did they remain to see whether things went south? Whether they could help? What was it that Swithin and Swisk were testing? Team building or stealth. Raela began moving silently down the corridor, isolating her upper body movements so she would make no noise with the bells.

Or did they make a distraction and see what would happen. Raela noted where the three firelizards had been and the pair kept as close to the shadowy corners of the corridor as they could until they were close to Norla's room but heading in the direction of Vessa's, ready to assist if there was any indication that Vatalian was in danger.

Team work ran completely contrary to everything Raela had ever been taught. Communication was even worse. Whilst she may have been able to easily remain undetected, working with others was still severely lacking.

@Captain (sorry I forgot to tag everyone in my first post where Raela and Raelsk said they were going for Norla's bangle) @Ives @Zane @Rowana
