Spring, 18th Turn, 11th Pass

Upcoming Flights:
Red Cyanide

Upcoming Hatchings:
Amber Era

Western Hold welcomes new blood in the form of a young couple, Lord Holder Basasius and Lady Holder Baria. A grand Gather is being hosted by Western Hold to welcome their new Lord and Lady.

While the new Lords settle into Western there has been talk and speculation about the western continent's other Hold. It has been two turns since his wife's passing in the south, when will Lord Callum decide to take up a new wife?

Spring has woken an abundance of plant life across Pern with intermittent spring showers helping to sate the growth's never ending thirst. With the end of snow and cold comes Thread once more; Dalibor's wings have no doubt been reduced due to losses over the winter but none the less they persevere.

15 (b. Winter, 2nd Turn, 11th Pass)
Dalibor Weyr

It is not uncommon to forget Emira's personality after meeting her. It's even more common to never have really met her at all. Emira is a bit of a recluse, more often found alone in her room, or alone in any room, for that matter. When she must move through a room with people, she trails along the outside, moving silent and wraithlike through the outskirts, mostly unnoticed. She is a loner, and while not a hermit, she values her alone time above all else.

The main reason for this is that Emira feels awkward in social situations. This is mostly due to her outward appearance; Emira is very insecure about her appearance and when she was younger she was often teased. Therefore, she has turned in on herself, keeping to herself and keeping the pain caused by others away.

Emira is rather creative, and uses this to keep herself from going crazy. Her main source of expression is in her weaving, which she has been practicing for a few turns now. When struck by inspiration, she can make tapestries of geometric designs, but most of the time she weaves heavy-duty fabric for Weyr-use. Secretly, she would love to specialize in elegant gather dresses, letting simple beauty shine through, but she would then have to be commissioned or go out and sell the dress, which she'd rather not do.

Emira does not shun socialization or friends, but it takes a long time and the right qualities to earn first her ear and then her heart. She's very kind and wishes everyone well, especially those she is close to. Her two brothers, who she would give her life for, get plenty of special treatment from her, including favors and gifts. Anyone else who manages to become friends with her would find her soft-spoken but very dedicated and rather selfless. Even those who do not fall within these categories are never dealt with harshly; even when Emira is at her most uncomfortable in the greatest group, she will remain as polite as she can manage.

Emira is the kind of woman that goes out of her way to appear as dull and commonplace as she can. She would rather be forgotten than pulled out in public because, on closer inspection, there is quite a lot to her. In her own right, she is very unique, largely because of the rare recessive trait she expresses. Emira is albino, and as such, is glaringly different from her peers.

Emira's hair is naturally white, with glowlight giving it a sickly yellow-green undertone. She keeps it long to help cover her neck, and it has waves softer than one would expect, considering the curls in her brothers' hair. Her soft, oval eyes are a shockingly pale blue, which has the tendency to unsettle people because of their strangeness. As such, and with her shyness, she tends to keep her eyes down and avoid the gaze of others. Gentle, pale eyebrows arch over these. Her face is a gentle oval, her features soft and otherwise unremarkable save for a somewhat prominent nose. The rest of her body follows this slight suit, with long, thin limbs and relatively small torso. As such, she also has little feminine curve around her hips and chest. Despite the long appearance of her body, she is only 5'6", only slightly taller than an average woman, making her a striking difference from her much taller brothers.

Her pale pink, translucent skin is more susceptible to damage from sun and wind than the average person, so her main clothing choices are darkly colored and cover a fair portion of her body. Long sleeves, turtlenecks, gloves, and wide-brimmed hats abound even in the hottest months, though she avoids the summer sun as much as she can. Even with her eyes sealed shut, led by hand, the light still burns her eyes, which causes her to generally go out blindfolded when she has to. On very rare occasions, like hatchings, she will be allowed the use of her father's dark riding goggles so she can see the hazy outlines and basic, muted colors. Because she is a weaver, her clothing tends towards fabrics more than hide, and tend to be more intricate than first meets the eye, using varying weaving patterns or special knits to add a bit of variety.

Father: C'laen of Brown Aakavath
Mother: Lera of Green Kiralyth (deceased)
Brother: Caelen, Candidate
Brother: Laerien, Candidate
It was her third pregnancy, and Lera of Fort Weyr wasn't at all worried. She had already delivered two healthy baby boys with absolutely no complications, and there hadn't been any indication in the early stages of pregnancy that this one would be any different. This, unfortunately, began changing as the pregnancy progressed. It was eventually discovered that the Greenrider was not carrying one, but two babies, one of which was shadowing the other. And while one seemed healthy, if small (as twins usually are), the other… not so much. Complications with the pregnancy quickly grew.

Emira was the fourth child of Lera and C'laen, as her twin, stillborn, was birthed first in their slightly premature entrance into the world. Emira was also thought to be born dead, as she was stained red from her toes to the wisps of hair on her head. But Emira announced her presence as she squealed with shock, cold, and hunger after being ripped so suddenly from the womb. She was washed of the blood that had turned her pale form ruddy, and further shocked the midwife and her attendants with her alabaster skin, ivory hair, and scarlet eyes. But there was no time to dwell on the pallid infant, as her mother bled out due to birthing complications. Though the healers worked as diligently as they could, Lera could not be saved, and passed away not long after.

Devoid of her mother, Emira was quickly bundled up and taken down to the Lower Caverns. Another woman had given birth only a few days earlier, and was asked to be wet-nurse to the tiny child. While the woman was irritated at suddenly having another infant to take care of and superstitious about the ghastly appearance of the baby, she accepted, knowing all too well that it wouldn't be looked upon very well if she refused. Emira developed slowly at first, but it wasn't long before she was beginning to catch up with her foster sister. Despite being a bit small and washed-out in color, Emira grew physically like any other child.

Emira learned at a young age that other kids and even adults can be very cruel. Children mocked her for being different; adults held superstitions about what her coloration meant both to her future and the future of the Weyr. Going outside without any protection was not an option; sunburn set in quickly and without remorse and even standing in an open doorway would cause her to start crying from pain. She had never been an outgoing or social person, which had helped minimize the bullying and alienation to an extent, but Emira still had chores and still had lessons to attend. Both were specialized for her, one always indoors and the latter with the Harper that specialized in children that needed remedial lessons. Her foster mother didn't help much, as she all but encouraged her biological children to leave out the foster kid, but she raised Emira nonetheless.

A large turning point in Emira's life was when she was picked to assist in weaving as one of her daily chores. The task required concentration, a steady hand, and patience, something her more boisterous contemporaries lacked, so she was separated from her attackers. The weaving and tailoring rooms were filled with other people similar to her: quiet, creative, and focused, and Emira found a place where she was not judged by how she looked, but how her creations looked. At first the cloth was crude but durable and workable, good enough to use to make work clothes for the drudges. Emira would not let herself be disappointed, and she practiced and tried new techniques. Having to work in soft glowlight, often working simple cloth by touch than sight. It wasn't too long before she was able to stitch basic clothing, and after enough practice she was able to make simple geometric tapestries to be hung to stave off the cold radiating from the stone surrounding them.

Though family ties weren't emphasized much in Fort, a tradition started to avoid nepotism, Emira still got very close to her brothers. Her foster mother was more than willing to let the girl run off and be someone else's problem, and so Emira shadowed Caelen or Laerian when she could. It was with great joy that she sat in the stands, watching them to the best of her ability as they stood for the egg. Secretly, she held some tiny hope that she would join them one day, but a girl like her would never be allowed to become a candidate.

Emira was eleven when she was uprooted from Fort. With the massive Threadfall decimating Pern, Wings were scrambled and transfers were made. Though Fort was among those hit hardest, full Wings were transferred in and those left with only half their members left were sent out to fill in elsewhere. With C'laen's transfer to Dalibor Weyr came the transfer of his children - two candidates who would be needed for rebuilding and his little girl.

Not much seemed to change for Emira: fabric still needed to be crafted, clothing tailored, and hiding holes to find. She has finally stopped getting lost on a regular basis on the way between the crafting halls and the kitchen through the warrens of tunnels. Dalibor feels chaotic compared to the more traditionalist Fort, something that rather terrifies the young Weaver. She's not sure how to take Elianne's murder, since it was people like Dora that had once been her neighbors.

How the Seventeenth Turn of this Pass will probably end up being as strange as the rest as far as Emira is concerned, a fact that concerns her more than she expected it would.
