Welcome
Dalibor is a semi-canon Dragonriders of Pern site. No knowledge of the series or site is required to join; players of all experience levels are welcome here. Founded in 2008 on Proboards and moved to Jcink in 2013, Dalibor has been running for nine years.

News
Winter, 18th Turn, 11th Pass

Upcoming Flights/Runs:
Red Ingoth

Upcoming Hatchings:

Winter is in full swing as the Northwest reaches the middle stages of the cold month, and Dalibor, taking full advantage of a crackdust filled break in Threadfall, is back at it again. Delving into the Southern ice and snow, they have paired with Grove Weyr to fully explore the lands they only slightly uncovered the previous turn during the Jungle Expedition. This, however, will not be a warm and relaxing waltz through the woods; although was it ever that to begin with?

It was difficult to be a Candidate. Equally difficult to be a Weyrling, Ulian supposed, but those were not their charges, these ones were. Candidates were brave, and headstrong, and some of them wouldn't understand why they couldn't go to the South and participate even at Base Camp. Helping how they were able. "You must always remember," they would remind them, "that you are being dutiful by staying here at the Weyr and continuing your chores, or Craft studies." A cold cup of brew to swallow, for sure. "A dragon may Rise at any time, which means you might be waiting for fresh eggs at any time, and if you were to go South and suffer injury, you would most likely be stuck there until you healed. However,".

And Ulian had paused while producing a stack of neat, palm-sized cut hides. They were far smaller than the ones assigned for the expedition, but they had been carefully recreated, and would be delivered every day by one of the Weyrriders no only for the Weyr's records, but for Ulian's lesson. "Over the coming sevenday, while our Riders and Handlers are working in the South, we will be using their efforts to study topography, mapping, and discussing the events from each day. The dangers, and what difficulties each Handler and Rider may have faced. We will discuss injuries, and we will discuss deaths. Nothing will be hidden from you. The life you are seeking to live is hard, but it is also fun, right? It's dangerous, but it is rewarding. It's time for you to see everything. Both sides. Not simply the blood on the Sands, but also the partnership. Also the blood out there, once you're already bonded."

Ulian laid the squares out so that they could be lined up with the help of the Candidates, and then affixed to the wall of the common room using wire attached to metal anchors sunk into holes long ago, used for various decorations and festivities over the turns. Old with rust. Over the coming days the squares would be updated, not only by Ulian, but by the Candidates themselves. They would be told the history of their square, and be asked to describe it based on what was drawn there. Topography would be explained. Valleys, mountains, signs of water, ice, danger and the like. Perhaps these things would not typically have been quite so important for a normal Dragonrider or Wherhandler outside of knowing how to between, and knowing where they were in the world, but for a Dalibor Rider or Handler? Expeditions had become a common thing for the West.

ooc: This is way to involve your Candidates in the Expedition, while also learning them things about the world they are in. (all without going South, sorry doots)

Nothing will be hidden from them, though there are things they won't quite understand as Pern doesn't quite understand it (like what is oil anyway), and they also will have to imagine everything they are seeing.

Feel free to draw on everything happening during the Expedition and at base camp, including injuries and deaths that occur, animals that are found.

Feel free to pick some parts of the map your characters would have drawn (they can even be drawn more than once) as they learn about maps and etc!

Neither Xialas nor Terragon were the most artistic individuals to exist. Though the former had the steady hand of wannabe healer and the latter spent enough Turns in candidacy to be competent at the various lessons involved. It wasn't very long into the daily discussions about events that a somewhat disturbing trend arose. The riders were in danger, but the handlers were taking the brunt of the worst injuries. Icemaulers were apparently shy beasts until they weren't and there were giant horned creatures that would happily trample someone on foot.

Xialas frowned. Thoughtful.

"Candidatemaster, comparatively to other expeditions in the past, would you say there have been more or fewer injuries. Is it common for bonded dragons to suffer injury more often than their rider, as compared to handlers, who appear to be injured more often than their whers?" If he was going to be a dragonhealer some day, this kind of information was of great interest. Understanding injury frequency and cause to better comprehension could lead into prevention in the future.

Terragon didn't ask any questions. He simply listened, alert but distant. Perhaps if he didn't die on the Sands he'd die on an expedition like this. Or he'd collect a few more scars or finally lose a limb. One handler nearly had her throat ripped out on the first day. His hand trailed to his collarbone. Would she heal up and continue on like nothing happened or would she be a broken thing? It was better to be dead than useless, he mused morbidly.

Let all the smarty pants ask the horrid questions. Unai had no desire to know about all the death and blood and mayhem that happened on expeditions. They had enough at the weyr why would she want to know about more of it out there? She would rather know about the different resources that were being found, the animals, the sites. Let candidates like Xialas ask those questions.

She barely listened to the would be dragonhealer and sat playing with the ties of her shoes instead. Half an ear, she heard him asked about deaths with big lofty words. Maybe to make himself appear smarter than he was, Unai didn't know. It was easier to use smaller works, more efficient. Ulian stated things that were obvious to her, things she already knew, things every candidate should already know. Yes, yes being a dragonrider was hard, deadly even and only the weak were frightened off by the prospect and good riddance. Unai was neither of those things. Never would be either of those things. Even those who were new to the program should know these things. She'd do what she needed doing when the time came, she could never be accused of not having courage or smarts.

Her hand shot up when Xialas was finally done talking, "Is it true that cyanhandler Edelan found some kind of new creature? Something that looks like a runner?" It interested her, more than blood and guts, the animals that were found. Besides dragons and Uonai, animals were her next favorite things. "Some kind of baby if people are tellin' the truth," she continued. Animals never lied, honest to a fault, less likely to treat a person like poop than another human. Dragons and animals were Unai's preference. Maybe she could get this Edelan to let her play with the creatures.

"What kind of resources are the finding?" she asked suddenly, "Like fancy stones? Or what?" That could be interesting. Something she might be able to find useful. Maybe when she could go on these expeditions she could find stuff to make marks.

Lessons, Tilihala was super excited for lessons! She was just a candidate, but she had spent her entire life just waiting for this moment. She had spent the whole last hatch just watching and wishing she was on the sands. It wasn't until it was over that she knew she was ready to finally seek her own dragon. She had been held out due to her father's death after the last expedition, of the plague that had swept through. She had heard that there was another expedition that was going on, and part of her had shuddered. It wasn't until the maps and explanations were put before her that she really felt the weight of it.

While this wasn't the cause of her father's death, and this place not even having been explored until now not where he had ever been, she felt a burning in her chest. He had died because of the Southern expeditions. She trembled. No, she could deal with this. She reached for one of the hides and stared at it. There was the map, and there was the account of what had happened. She felt a little sick to her stomach. It was the Queen Wher and her rider, viciously attacked by an icemauler. She had studied it thoroughly, but felt a pang of anger and hurt inside of her.

Part of her never wanted to go there, and a massive part of her did. To go and conquer it there. She found Unai when it was time to meet and while she didn't speak directly to her, she did sit near her.

"I'd like to know about the Southern Icemaulers. I've been reading the report on Zel and Zelsk. They seem incredibly fast, in order to get a one over on a Wher and their handler even traveling in pairs as they were. Do you think they're worth the risk of life to try and capture and tame? I have heard of the much larger cousins of them, but not much else. The sound very skittish."

@Jenn if you want someone to interact with XD
------------

Scoria was new to lessons, at least these kind of redundant things. She rolled her eyes at some of the more boring aspects of candidacy. There was a lot of waiting involved, and that just blew shards. So she spent her free time from chores and that boring nonsense to dealing with furthering her studies in minercraft. At least she got to keep the night schedule that she so adored. But when they did combined lessons like this, that made her a bit more tired, she just yawned and looked annoyed. Until she found out that there were discoveries of new stones! Then she was all for it. "I want to know all about the new stones found out there." She told Ulian. She was very excited about the rocks. Though she was less than enthused with finding out that her dumb sister had broken her legs during this expedition.

"Would it be allowed for me to travel to the hold and tell my sister she's a dimglow for letting herself fall down a hole and break her legs?" Scoria asked without hesitation. She hadn't exactly gotten to see the report, and even if she did, she'd probably still give Pyrite some grief for it. She'd probably also tell Basalt he was stupid for letting her get hurt. Ooh, her entire family was sharding stupid. She wouldn't be so stupid as to break her legs on an expedition. "I also need to insult my brother for letting her get hurt." She added. She was good at sketching over maps, because, well, she was part of the minecraft, and they were good at that.

Unai nodded at Tili when she sat next to her. The candidate appreciated that the other girl didn't start talkig to her immediately. Unai never was one for conversation right from the get go. She liked to work up to it. She did however scoot a little closer to the other girl. Unai had liked the look of her the last time they'd met and she liked the look of her now, even if she did look a little green around the gills. She was nosy, leaning over to check out the square of hide Tili had picked up. Zel and Zelsk's run in with an icemauler. There had been several such reports.

"I would too," she gave a small shy smile to the other girl, "They seem like they're pretty nasty. I didn't think anything could sneak up on a wher and its handler especially at night." She didn't care much for whers as she did for dragons but it had been disheartening when the news of Zel's attack had reached the weyr. "Do you think they see better in the dark than whers do?" she posed her question at both Ulian and Tili.

"Dangerous as they might be," she said suddenly brave, if not a little foolish, "I wouldn't mind having one as a pet. Same as those new critters Edelan found. They sound like they could make an interesting addition to the weyr." She looked at Scoria with fresh eyes when the girl asked about stones. She didn't know many of the wher candidates, she didn't much care to, but she knew this one was in a family full of miners. Their parents had done the weird thing and named them all for stones in the ground. "Not surprising," she laughed at her, "given your background."

For the Candidates left alive without a wheret, Dragonet, or major injuries (or injuries at all for some like Garenta) as well as those Searched or transferred into Dalibor after the Hatching there wasn’t much to break up the ordinary chores and lessons between Hatchings in the Weyr. The expedition, for better or worse, would prove to be interesting though she wouldn’t be able to participate in person, at least in this one though there might be another like this when she finally Impressed whenever that is.

The number of incidents of Icemauler encounters and maulings, as well as some other beast native to the southern extremes of the Southern Continent, were concerning though not the the illness that was seen in the reports of the previous expedition. At least the illness was endemic to the jungles of Southern Pern south of Grove Weyr though she wasn’t exactly an expert on it, seeing as she had limited experience on treating whers and some tips on first aid on herself during a Hatching. Garenta tried her best at working with the other Candidates working with what information they got from the expedition on a daily basis with her Cyan Bekara not having much to do other than what Garenta asked of her.
