April 2018 Featured RPG
Welcome
Dalibor is a semi-canon Dragonriders of Pern site. No knowledge of the series or site is required to join; players of all experience levels are welcome here. Founded in 2008 on Proboards and moved to Jcink in 2013, Dalibor has been running for nine years.

News
Winter, 18th Turn, 11th Pass

Upcoming Flights/Runs:
Red Ingoth

Upcoming Hatchings:

Winter is in full swing as the Northwest reaches the middle stages of the cold month, and Dalibor, taking full advantage of a crackdust filled break in Threadfall, is back at it again. Delving into the Southern ice and snow, they have paired with Grove Weyr to fully explore the lands they only slightly uncovered the previous turn during the Jungle Expedition. This, however, will not be a warm and relaxing waltz through the woods; although was it ever that to begin with?

I'm not going to wait for you, Vianna. I am always waiting for you, and it has become tiring

He wasn't lying either.

Trying to push her way through the snow, bundled up in inward-facing furs and layers alike, why I'm just slower'n a fat feline on a hot day, sweetner, you're gonna have to wait for me. He wasn't, or at least he wanted the appearance of not waiting, but in truth Iaphaetoth never went far without her. He couldn't. He needed her, and was too insecure in his place in the world to survive without her there by his side, but the truth of that drove him into a rage, and having it pointed out drove him into a rage, and then he wanted nothing more than to assert his independence in the worst possible ways.

That was why they were currently sliding down the worn road leading to the Crafter's Cottages and the piers right now. Dalibor was always full of people, but so many were in the South for the Expedition that there was a certain quiet to the Weyr that Vianna had never experienced before. No other Weyr on Pern devoted so much man, dragon, and wherpower to a cause so far from home. She had, in truth, never seen a Weyr so empty, even though it was hardly empty at all.

It was...amazing.

Phaery wasn't too far ahead, just far enough that he felt independent, and not so far that they were at risk--even though, she supposed, they were at risk. The Crafters would largely move up to the Weyr during the cold season, save those who liked to eke out a snow-bound existence down by the docks, and those hired on to keep the road relatively plowed and the ways clear for the necessary tithe wagons and visitors. The road wasn't empty by any means, but the usual flow of people in and out had dwindled to one or two here or there. Even the road itself was a sheet of ice and snow and very few prints save the ones they were leaving behind.

Don't expect we're supposed to be out here, darlin'

Show's what you know, stupid. We cant leave the Weyr, this is still the Weyr

Vianna wasn't so sure about that, but it seemed safe enough, and really she'd always been something of a willing participant in most things anyway. How much trouble could they get in here anyway. Alright, but you aren't to go near the water. It's cold and...well dangerous. My pa always said you can't turn your back on it, why I've never even set foot in the ocean! The Burgundy, now a full season old, was eleven feet long from snout to rump, and his tail neatly doubled that. In fact, as far away as he thought he was, she could reach out and grasp the tail even now as it waved in front of her. That was larger than any Wher on Pern, so far as Vianna knew, so as long as some mutated beast didn't appear...

they'd be fine!

'One of Laansuth's youngest has strayed from the path.'

'What?'

A'dran was preparing to head back to Grove, having spent the day helping ferry people and supplies instead of scouting. He groaned when Wobath showed him an image of a burgendyweyrling pair leave the weyrbowl. With so few people here, he doubted they were given permission to leave and by the look of it, there was no escort. They were just waltzing down the path like they were supposed to be there.

'I suppose I should do something?'

'It would be tragic if their wanderings led to misfortune.' Preventable misfortune. I'm going, I'm going. If anyone makes a comment about us being late back...' He wasn't going to hold names. Huffing like sleep deprived wher, A'dran focused until his fair emerged from Between. It was a distracting flurry of color and noise, but he was used to managing them now that a majority were full grown. He pictured the pair that Wobath showed him and urged his fair to, ah, intervene. It would take him a little while to catch up on foot and he'd rather not make a scene by landing Wobath in the middle of the walking path outside the weyr towards the docks. Wonder let out a trill and the kaleidoscope was off.

The brownrider then jogged off towards the wayward weyrlings. By the time he reached them, his fair had long since taken it upon themselves to be as distracting as possible. There enough of them to make for quite a show. The smaller fighters were attempting to land on the girl, nipping and tugging at her clothes and hair when they succeeded. The larger amongst them, including Wonder and her ever loyal brown fairmate, Wisdom, were pestering the burgundy. Mostly this involved trying to block his path with their combined bulk (they weren't small, but even a baby dragon outstripped them in size!).

"Hey! What're you two doing out here?"

Attempt at sounding authoritative? Eh, tentative success? A'dran knew he sounded, at the very least, aggravated.

"Now aren't you just the cutest!"

Vianna was trying to make friends with the firelizards who had suddenly appeared in the air. The fanciful part of her mind wondered if maybe she was to be like the Harper tales of folk who bonded to so many of them, or maybe like that tall giant of a man who was always coated in them. There were just so many!

Iaphaetoth was trying to eat them. In earnest. She knew he didn't even care if they were bonded, because what did a firelizard pest matter to him, and he was growing. Always looking for a snack. "Now don't you go hurting any of them," she scolded softly, but it did not deter his attempts at munching on the beasts. A tail, a wing, a limb, anything he could catch would be good enough. He even started trying to bat them out of the air with his wings.

Vianna hoped that he remained largely unsuccessful. Of course, she couldn't spend much time worrying about it once she'd been swarmed as well. In fact, she soon lost her footing and started sliding down the rolling hills that the road cut through on the way to the cottage. Iaphaetoth squawked in surprise and gave chase, the firelizards temporarily forgotten, but Vianna was laughing.

Laughing and probably still covered in firelizards. She couldn't imagine a better way for this day to have gone, she'd be imagining this moment for turns to come, she was sure. When she came to a stop a few dragonslengths away from where she'd begun, she simply lay there a moment to watch the snowflakes falling from the overcast grey sky. It was all so peaceful, even with the firelizards there scolding her for daring to try and escape in an unconventional method.

Iaphaetoth encroached on her view of the sky, peering down at her. There were all colours of wings sailing behind his head, and she smiled. They weren't even dream wings, they were there. "Isn't it lovely, sweetner?" she cooed at him. Then someone else entirely was trying to chide her, a male by the sound of it. She didn't bother sitting up yet to look at him, maybe he'd peer down at her too. Then there would be so many things peering down at her, framed by the grey sky and the snowflakes.

"Sledding, I think. Without the sled, silly," she laughed, "what'er you doin' out here? It's lovely, isn't it? The snow, and the quiet of course." Phaery was muttering something under his mind, still taking half-hearted attempts at snapping a firelizard out of the sky if it strayed too close, but finally he gave up and started snapping at her instead. Come on, Vianna, I'm so tired of waiting for you the man went largely ignored.

Sledding without the sled. Was this girl implausibly drunk or just that oblivious? He was promptly battered with Wonder's utter insult at being snapped at and shooed off like a common pest. Great. A copper in a tiff to go along with this strange situation. A'dran grumbled under his breath and ate up the last of the distance between them. She laid there in the snow, looking like a dimglow. So he decided to share his rapidly deteriorating mood by nudging over a lump of fresh snow onto her face with the toe of his boot. Okay, not exactly the most mature move to make, but she was laying in the stuff. If she had a problem with it she'd be standing instead of sprawling about as if she were a gravid queen on a sunny day.

Wish abandoned the annoyance mission and made a point of draping across both A'dran's shoulders. Not that she had any competition to perch on him at the moment. The cuddling nuisance, Warrior, found a warm stranger to snuggle. She was a happy green, settling on the weyrling's stomach and nuzzling her chin in a bid for attention. Well, she was happy until snow landed on her head. Then she was confused....before shaking it off and being happy again. The others were either in the air above or joining their Queen in pestering the burgundy. Many members had practice avoiding assault. Read: Wildfire and Whiplash. The red and bronze were notorious for their inopportune aggression. Both seemed content screeching at and harassing their large foe.

"So is your weyrlingmaster incompetent or are you just cracked?" A'dran shoved his hands into his pockets as he stared down at the girl. "Go on. Get up. Last I checked, weyrlings aint supposed to be outta the bowl this young." He wasn't one to usually intervene in other people's stupid, but Wobath had a point. The weyr would be weaker if the pair died because he left them to get mauled by an intrepid wild wher. It was probably easier to look important and commanding without a cyan flit nuzzling his cheek and trying to crawl under the collar of his riding jacket.

There was a firelizard cuddling with her!

Then she was sputtering and wiping snow off of her face. Iaphaetoth was chortling in her head, a screeching bird-like noise out of his throat, but she was laughing too so it didn't matter. She did her best to wipe the snow off before it all melted into her hat and hair, but soon enough she returned to snuggling the firelizard right back. "Both?" She ventured cheerfully, having still not sat up or moved beyond pushing away the snow. She sighed softly, but it was a happy sound as she tilted her head down and back to look at the world in an upside view. "Y'know this is still the Weyr," she chatted back softly. "Phaery just wanted to see the Crafter's Cottages, make sure everyone is doin' alright."

I don't care if they are alright, I said I wanted to see if any of them were frozen, and you're so slow about it, this meaningless pest of a boy never would have found us if you could have walked a little bit faster, Vianna

She laughed again, "oh c'mon now, sweetner, I don't think it has much to do with how fast I was going." Finally, she did sit up, peering at A'dran's knots. "Not explorin'? You could always chaperone," she offered brightly. I'll run off again the moment you leave anyway, so why don't you save yourself the trouble and run off on your own? "Now, now, darlin'. That's no way to talk to a Dragonrider. We might be Wingmates someday, then what would you do?"

Let the Thread eat him the dragon replied smugly. Vianna rolled her eyes and clucked. So much for good manners and hospitality. "I'm Vianna," she said as she rolled up out of the snow with great effort thanks to the amount of fur she was wearing. "Although you probably know that already, what with chatterwherry over here. He's Iaphaetoth, but everyone calls him Phaery."

That isn't remotely close to the truth

"I said the Bowl, not the Weyr. See any walls around us?" He flung his arm out for emphasis. "Weyrlings don't usually go beyond the walls of the weyr." And what was this nonsense of playing chaperone? He was pretty sure 'lings this little needed weyrlingmaster approval to go out, not just the presence of a newly graduated rider. Right? Even if he could, in theory, give the pair the retroactive permission they needed to go out, why would he? He was busy. 'Patience, Mine. You will gain less ground with haste.' A'dran pinched his brow and drew in a breath.

"It is the duty of the Weyr to protect its own, including the crafters. No doubt a rider or handler has already done what you assume to be doing." There. Nice and calm. He sounded less like he wanted to strangle her and more like he wanted to escort her back to the Bowl.

Warrior followed Vianna as she sat up, clinging to her coat and chirping as she found a new place to settle. All the time was cuddle time. She toyed with the weyrling's jacket and hat, tiny claws mindful not to snag or snare, in hopes of returning the girl's focus entirely onto her. Snuggles made everything better, especially when it was cold or someone was grumpy. Like Hers! He needed cuddles a lot. She ignored the way A'dran looked at her, like she was a wayward toddler escaped from the creche. He'd get his snuggles later.

'They are young. Iaphaetoth has yet to learn temperance. Perhaps His is too yielding? Time will tell.'

'They're trouble.'

'You've an affinity for finding those types.'

'What do you mean by that, Bud?' A'dran neither expected nor received a reply. "I did happen to catch your name while he was tactlessly planning his rebellion, yes." His drawl was accompanied by an arched brow. He motioned to himself, "A'dran, Rider of Brown Wobath. The flit attempting to climb down your shirt is Warrior." A flicker of movement drew his gaze skyward just in time to see Western swoop down towards the burgundy, malicious mischief glaringly obvious. "Oi, no rocks!" The spotted purple banked up, clearly put off by His stopping his delightful 'prank'. His games could get rough and while burgundy was a brat, he didn't deserve literal rocks dropped on his head. For Faranth's sake, this was why he didn't bother most of the time. He was busy enough keeping an eye on his flits without needing to keep a weyrling from wandering off and possibly drowning in an inch of water when they face planted in a puddle of slush.

Let's go, Vianna, he can't do anything

This canine has no bite the Burgundy snapped his jaws in emphasis. Vianna only smiled. "I don't know, Phaery, might not be much down there now while it's cold. Y'know my gran always said that spring fish are dumb enough to swim into the barrel all on their own," this last was pointed towards A'dran. Iaphaetoth was itching to continue on, but he'd seemed to reach the end of an invisible tether, and in fact was wearing a path in the snow in an arc around his girl, though he hadn't seemed to notice what he was doing. Vianna remained unconcerned. "You wouldn't want to be saddled with extra work, would you?"

The Burgundy snorted, extra work for you, he chuffed. How can they punish me. They couldn't, but she could. She didn't mention that, or threaten it. Even if she was one to threaten, which she certainly was not, Phaery wasn't the type to take well to such coercion. That was probably why they got on so well. "C'mon now, sweetner," she said cheerily to A'dran, "let's go on down to the village, d'you know I bet it's as cozy as a coal in a basket down there," and she didn't give him a chance to say no, turning to grab on to Iaphaetoth's swinging tailtip to let him pull her down the road and help her keep her footing.

"C'mon, A'dran," she called over her shoulder. "You can go an' get yourself maimed in the South after we check in on the Crafters, and Phaery 'n' I'll get back to the Barracks all safe and sound, and you," she softened her voice and stroked Warrior's neck, "are just the sweetest little bit, anyone ever told you that?" Iaphaeoth started trot-hopping down the lane, leaving Vianna to lean back as she held onto her tail, becoming something of a sled pulled by a very large runner, her knees bouncing up and down over the little snow drifts as her boots cut through them.

"Y-you...Hey!"

A'dran sputtered as Vianna walked off having decided that he was going to chaperone. He had not agreed to that! Bafflement replaced any inclination to be angry or offended. She just wandered away with Warrior in her arms, a hand holding her Burgundy's tail like a living leash. The green basked in the attention, at last opening up the top of her jacket. She was quick to duck inside. Rude little creature. She was lucky people usually thought she was cute.

'You know as well as I that force will not work in this situation.' The young rider trotted after the weyrling. 'Aren't weyrlings supposed to listen to riders?' Wobath paused, 'You've made observations, not orders.' A'dran glowered at Vianna's back, 'You know how well the who giving orders thing usually pans out for me.'

'Then try a different tactic.'

The brown was air born now, offering images of colorful wings against the frosty landscape. His shoulders dropped. It wasn't his job to wrangle weyrlings or teach them not to get eaten. But he could make sure she didn't die if she insisted on being out here. True, the odds were slim that anything would happen, but dragonets were fragile. Even if they seem like tempests walking. He gathered his thoughts and soon, the gathered Fair scattered. Only a few remained close, including Wish and Warrior. Above, acting as a circling, arial scout, was Wander. The blue rarely landed and naturally made wide loops around His and His own.

They were following a simple order. To seek and watch. If they found anything remotely threatening, they'd report back. In an emergency, Wobath could assist.

"You're going back to the barracks before it's dark. Even if I have to pick you up drag you there myself. Got it?" And S'vor would need to be informed of this incident. He could decide if it was a punishable offense or not. Otherwise, he took no action to prevent her from continuing onward.

"Oh my, yes," Vianna said brightly. "It sure gets cold here even before then, and the whers would put an end to it anyroad. Do you like whers, A'dran? I never met many myself, but I do think they have their moments. They can put up something of a fuss sometimes, can't they? Going about all angry like, why my pa always said they just didn't have their heads on right some days. But then again, don't you feel like that too? Some days just aren't all that good. I think today is going to be a good day!" Iaphaetoth continued his trot down the road, and things went much smoother this time, even with the firelizards. Phaery still wanted to eat them, but as long as they weren't pestering him much...well, he'd tolerate it.

The Burgundy stopped at the first little cottage, shuttered against the cold, and scrabbled at the door not unlike a canine wanting back in after making the choice to go out. Oh it was opened quick enough, here on their little island what did anyone really have to fear, though there was a peculiar pause as if the occupant wondered what exactly might be scratching out there anyway. "Thought you were a stray," said the man who answered gruffly, his brows folding down over his eyes as he considered what he was seeing. "Ent you weyrlin's supposed to be up there?", "Oh, s'alright," Vianna quipped, "this here is Brownrider A'dran, he's keeping us safe."

This appeased the Crafter who eyed the young man with the appreciation afforded to all Dragonriders, especially those on the larger dragons. "I brought warm cider from the kitchens, do you need anything?" True to her word, the bloated girl produced a skin from within the thick fur jacket. Perhaps giving rise to the wonder of how many things were actually tucked in there, and maybe an answer as to why she'd appeared so unable to clamber out of the snow once in it. "Nah," the man replied after taking the warmed skin, then he promptly shut the door. They were letting the warm out after all. Vianna didn't seem to care that their conversation had been cut short.

There were still quite a few cottages to check on. "And who knows," she said to A'dran as she carried on through the little roadways that linked all of the buildings. "Maybe someone will need our help!"
