Dalibor is a semi-canon Dragonriders of Pern site. No knowledge of the series or site is required to join; players of all experience levels are welcome here. Founded in 2008 on Proboards and moved to Jcink in 2013, Dalibor has been running for nine years.
Winter, 18th Turn, 11th Pass
Winter is in full swing as the Northwest reaches the middle stages of the cold month, and Dalibor, taking full advantage of a crackdust filled break in Threadfall, is back at it again. Delving into the Southern ice and snow, they have paired with Grove Weyr to fully explore the lands they only slightly uncovered the previous turn during the Jungle Expedition. This, however, will not be a warm and relaxing waltz through the woods; although was it ever that to begin with?

Hatchings!, The who what why when and how!
Member Inventory: View
In a never ending effort to remain transparent with our members the Staff have decided to unveil the not so secret ‘secret’ behind hatchings and the subsequent impressions!
When there is a need for a clutch Staff opens up sign-ups - if there are multiple interested parties a random roll decides the winner. All females running/flying will be assigned a month during which they must begin and conclude their flights. For non-clutching females their job is over but for those who will be clutching it has just begun! All members can see the flight sign-up and the list denoting which females will clutch and when so there is no confusion; all choices are posted in the sign-up forum for the most transparency. (The wild wher clutch hatching was a plot hatching and thus not included on this list simply because there were no eligible/available queen whers to hatch out another queen - this plot had been in the workings for approximately two years and the addition of new members felt like the appropriate time to unveil it.)
Hatch runners are expected to post and conclude their flights and post their clutching no more than two weeks following the conclusion of their flight. They are given a rough estimate of how many eggs they will have at sign-up - depending on member levels, activity, and the number of eligible candidates their final egg number is decided and communicated to the hatch runner via PM within a month of their hatching. If they need more time to acquire art they can request their spread earlier, but this is not guaranteed.
Located as a subform of Staffland is “‘Hatchland’ where a number of resources are provided for our Hatchrunners to assist in creating their clutch such as: adult size guidelines for dragons/whers based on color, a list of all current candidates (official and stands) as well as a brief overview of their preferences and links to their profiles, a template for what information they should provide for each hatchling (name, impressee, color, hex, physical description, personality, and why? - all to be posted upon impression in the hatching thread), and a thread specific to their hatching where they are given their full color spread. Customarily the “ranking” colors are chosen by Staff based on need, though the Hatchrunner’s thoughts are always taken into account. Fighter colors are chosen by the Hatchrunner, though Staff may request certain colors based on need.
Throughout the creation process, Hatchrunners are expected to post their personalities, art, and Impression matches in their thread within “Hatchland”. Ultimately finishing with each filled template ready to go at least a week prior to the Hatching start. While Impression choices can and do change up to and even during the hatching, it is very important that this information is laid out for Staff so that, should the Hatchrunner be unable to complete their hatching, Staff can post the finished dragons and Impress them to the Candidates chosen by the Hatchrunner.
Staff does not choose impressions for the hatch runner and only gives minimal input - this is the hatch runner’s gig and Staff does not wish to impede their creativity! The only time Staff intervenes is if the hatch runner picks a match that the player of the intended impressee is ineligible for (IE: the player already has a squeen dragon and the hatch runner intended to impress another one of their characters a squeen), or if Staff all agree that the personality match between them could prove catastrophic. Staff always encourages hatch runners to review preferences for eligible candidates to ensure they are mindful of any hard ‘nos’ on a character.
Regarding the type of characters eligible for various colors, it is up to how the hatch runner writes their dragon/wher personalities. The page describing each color offers a generalization of the personality each color is ‘known’ for, obviously Dalibor offers a wide variety and the hatch runners are great at not producing cookie cutter type hatchlings! Dalibor has seen a number of grumpy dragons/whers paired with happy go lucky matches and vice versa - there have also been grumps paired with grumps and bubbly personas matched with equally bubbly personas. Typically there are some pairings that hatch runners avoid - such as pairing violent dragons/whers with violent individuals. If a match could pose a safety issue to the Weyr as a whole usually hatch runners err on the side of caution and avoid it; again this is their call and one Staff supports as it makes perfect sense. If there is something you simply cannot see playing out in conjunction with your character you should use your preferences to be very specific about this. Hatch runners are not mind readers!
Hatch runners can choose to have a ‘guessing’ contest or not in the game room and if they choose to run one the Staff provides a prize pool they can choose a prize from. Staff then provides the prize to the winner once everything is said and done!
There you have it. From sign-up to the hatching itself, the ‘secrets’ have been revealed! Hatch runners could be any person, Staff or member, with an eligible clutching female and there is a conscious effort to allow as many opportunities for every member desiring a clutch to have one. The number of active members we have as well as candidates available for impression has a huge impact on how many clutches (and how big said clutches are) we have each year - so if everyone wants more (or larger) clutches it is in your best interest to recruit, recruit, recruit!
