Wa'ut of blue Qith and Pavir of black Pask (NPCs)
Dragon/Wher
Tile: 97

"Okay, so fewer dead things this time." Pavir heaved a sigh and patted Pask on the shoulder and trudged on.

"Fewer dead things," Wa'ut agreed with a nod. At least they agreed on one thing. "Maybe that fruit will prove useful, though."

"Maybe," Pavir agreed quietly, stepping over a fallen branch and waiting to make sure Pask made it over it, too. He was less worried about Wa'ut, whom made it over just fine without help.

"Hopefully something we brought back will prove useful," Wa'ut continued cautiously.

Pavir nodded agreement. "I hope so. Everyone is getting sick. It's worrisome." He sighed and picked at a leaf, looking it over before looking to Wa'ut for approval. The bluerider nodded and it was plucked and put in a vial and into the pack.

Xena of Brown Xesk, Denahi of Bronze Denask
Square 128

Well, having a Bronzehandler had proven a good idea after the feline attack... The second one Xena had dealt with in as many days. She was tired of this shards-forsaken jungle. The map was almost complete, though, so soon everyone could go home.

And the southernmost edge of the map had been... snow. Snow and ice. What was with this place? Snow and ice was supposed to be on the northern continent, not in the tropical south. And the snow and ice was all so reflective, they had no choice but to wait until after dark to go out. And even then, Xena could tell that Xesk thought the snow was too bright. Though neither wher was complaining about it. It was a necessary discomfort.

Let me know if either you or Denask hear anything, she told Xesk, though she knew she really didn't need to. He was good at letting her know. Well, usually. But there was just so much going on in the jungle that it was hard to tell the dangerous sounds from the benevolent.

N’baatar/Burl; dragon/wher; square 115

He had to go there.

N'baatar was a native of the frozen north, living in the southern (to him) areas for only the last few turns. To him the south was always hot; to learn that the south had areas as cold as home both surprised and fascinated him. He had to go see at least one part of the Southern Wastes before returning to Dalibor, if only as a tale to tell his relatives.

But he could do that later, after this current mission was done with. Right now he had one more area to explore in this jungle, then he’d be free to at least take a peak at the snowy areas. So the Burgundyrider teamed up with Burl once more to travel to those icefields. The Whitehandler was willing; if only to avoid the icy traps in the glaciers, despite wanting to see those mineral others found in their natural environment. The jungle seemed safer, overall.

So once more armed with arrows and knives and a fighting wher, the pair set off for the jungle part of the map. And once this was all over, perhaps he and Sheith would even get a chance to see the strange antlered beasts said to be down there in the snow fields.

Maybe.

Minn & Misk (w/ Eden & Esk @Ivy)
Wher/Wher; Square 129

It wasn't that Minn was planning on going anywhere dangerous, it was that everywhere was dangerous. Hadn't the other handler heard the stories? Now that the Vintner knew what was out there she realized it was a miracle more people weren't dead. Like yesterday, for example, she got lucky with that crack of ice not being any deeper than it was. If it had been...well, she didn't want to think about that. Both her body and pride were quite a bit bruised from the experience and it made her all the more ready to finish this shardin' expedition so that they could head home. If only they could find a cure...

"We're nearing the end. I can feel it." Minn was trying to be more light-hearted around Eden and Esk after the events of yesterday. She knew most people saw her as cold and unwelcoming, like this ice, not to mention she was a very blunt person. Misk, while quiet, was a ray of Rukbat in comparison and he had greeted Esk with a toothy grin to start their night. The cold didn't seem to bother him as it was a nice change from Grove's usual heat. Hopefully the way forward would be free of trouble this time around.

NPCs Synnifrid of Green Wynnifrisk and F'ox of Cyan Bismuth
Dragon/Wer
Square:86

Oh! Wynnifrid was always excited to find something. Even if it wasn’t one of those newfangled pets, she was tempted to keep some of the flowers and plants she had. But she knew it was likely better for the community at large if she offered them up to people who might do more with it. The strange, liquid filled flowers were novel, though, and she was glad to have found them. Wynnifrisk found them interesting as well too, insisting on carrying them in her pack on her harness.

Much of the jungle had been mapped out, and Wynnifrid knew their days in this lush hellscape was likely coming to an end. So once more, she bothered F’ox to take her out. Bismuth agreed almost instantly. Her rider… Well he came around eventually. After the previous day’s trip to the river, he insisted they go somewhere else. There were only so many questionable corpses one could see on a trip. So they went further into the jungle once more.

Wynnifrid and Wynnifrisk at point, F’ox at the back. He had even procured his own walking stick and was carefully poking about in the underbrush. After all, he didn’t want to be eaten. Or scratched. Or crushed. Or any of the other horrible things that had happened out here.

“See anything yet Whynnifrid?”
“As I told you before boy, call me Whynni. It’s shorter. But nah, haven’t seen anythin’ yet.” Wynnifrisk bound forward, pouncing on a small VTOL-cousin. The Wher was still scared of the jungle, but she was bolded some. Especially now that everyone had a stick to beat back the mosnters with!

Tor'n/Toumke
Dragon/Wher
Square 87

"You know, I think I'm going to miss this place," Tor'n mentioned thoughtfully. "The thrill, the adventure, the fascinating discoveries..."

"The heat, the mud, the giant killer snakes..." Toumke added darkly. He rolled his eyes to the sky. "Honestly, I still don't know how I got talked into this insanity."

Tor'n grinned. "Admit it, you had some fun," he teased. "Yesterday we had some good luck!" It was true. The egg they brought back was a good find, even if he didn't keep it himself. He had really enjoyed this trip overall and was almost going to miss going back to the routine of drills and threadfighting. Then again, there was the illness that had been brought back to the Weyr to return to first. He frowned at the thought. Hopefully they found a solution to that before more lives were lost. But for today, they had one more area to explore.

"Our luck could still run out," Toumke pointed out, interrupted his thoughts. The wherhandler glanced at the almost completed map and sighed. "But let's finish what we started."

Tor'n beamed and clapped him on the shoulders. "Let's go then! One last time."

Dragon/Wher
Tile 96
NPC Eldrid of Blue Zanth/PC Abelmo of blue Abelmosk (@Blot)

.

His mood was a little sour. Just a little. There were perilous dangers and grand treasures to be found in the jungle. Just the previous evening a clumsy oaf of a greenrider brought back the strangest looking golden snyt! It had to be even more valuable than the already priceless beauties sold by the beastcrafter Hall. And what did he find? Not even some boring mushrooms. No. A rash. A brief, irritating rash. He couldn't even make up some epic story of how he was near devoured by bugs and barely escaped with his life with a such a mild injury!

Zanth, of course, thought his was being a might bit ridiculous.

The sensible blue that he was didn't especially care for His being injured, even if the adventurous fool seemed to seek disaster at every given chance. But His was His. As silly as he could be at times with his obsession.

Sometimes he wondered, though, if one of the Harpers that Eldrid called parents, dropped the adled boy on his head. Or if they just never explained that the grievous deaths in the stories he loved so much were....well, painful ways to die.

"Today will find our destiny. I know it."

Zanth remained quiet.

Hopefully they would finish this day of mapping with all their bits and bobs still attached.

C'ian//Riyd
Dragon//wher
Square 85

Whilst others were seemingly following a path, C'ian and his partner were following their whims. Some were in search of the horned creature, C'ian and Riyd were after adventure really. They had found a perfect combination in the pair and were reluctant to lose it so they continued on exploring the squares that were for riders and whers, mol eased for the opportunity to so something interesting and different. So out the went, C'ian still burning like a furnace and Riyd keen to see the job done.

They went to the jungle again, as oppressive and hot as it was, C'ian still seemed convinced that there was something out here worth seeing. Something that they could befriend other than his whersport which still had to be named. The pair were excited, though, and keen to bring back whatever could be found. Keener still to get out of the camp where disease had run rampant.

So on they went.

Czervon of Blue Czervosk / Der of Gray Desk (Ride-along)
Wher/Wher
Square: 131

@Rii

A broken arm had ultimately been the worst of his injuries, but even worse than any injury, was that with both he and Der being scraped up and hurt, it meant going closer to the Quarantine area. Of course, there'd been another tent set up for those uninfected, but how did they know if the 'clean' ones were really clean?

He had no choice. He was no healer, and his arm was quite obviously broken. Frustrated beyond compare, Czervon had forewent numbweed in favor of being out of there as quickly as possible, once Der had also been cleaned up and checked over, and gone out to spearfish. Something that wasn't any easier to do one-armed, but entirely plausible given his past history and experience. It took him a little bit longer to catch things, and once more he ventured down the beach looking for shellfish, before returning and cooking up something for himself and his weyrmate.

The next morning, he managed to secure 'Vosk's goggles back on, and carrying a thicker walking stick to help with support given he only had one arm to use, it was back up the glacier for another crack at exploration. After all, the news from the Weyr was equally depressing - a fair share of people were sick there, too, and some had even died. Not much better of a place to return to, not until everything had run its course and they could figure out where to go from there.

There was still a job to do, after all, and laying around waiting to catch sick wasn't high on his list of priorities. That glacier had pissed him off, and now it was time for some payback.

Der/Desk with Czervon/Czervosk

Der suspected they would have fared worse, if it hadn't been for the big bluehandler. It was he that took the brunt of the impact of the oncoming rush of snow. He was the one that got Desk out of the snow when Der, sprained ankle and all, had been digging franticly in an effort to get to his wher. She was small, and it didn't take a lot of snow to bury her.

He owed Czer a very, very affectionate thank-you when all of this was over. Desk was his life. Maybe she would have dug herself out fine, maybe not. He wasn't willing to test it again. What mattered was she was okay.

Of course, needing the healers, and thus needing to actually go into Grove proper, had made his mate less than impressed with the world. He did his best to cheer him up, but it was going to take some powerful good news for that.

Carting his share of equipment along the glacier's icy expanse, Der whistled softly under his breath. "You could walk across this thing for days," he commented quietly. "And there's still more that way." Pausing for a moment, he shielded his eyes and squinted against the glare, looking as far south as their vantage point allowed. "All I see is white. I didn't know that you could go so far south that it feels like the north again."

Sakoru / B'tor

It's coming to a close now, this glorious expedition. There are so few areas left that need exploring you aren't even sure if you'll get to come out again after this. Day in and day out you've suffered trials and tribulations. You've slapped cats, fought off wildlife, and come away with prizes--some more shiny than others. No matter what happens in the future, you can say: I, I participated in this historic event. I was there. I came, I saw, I conquered.

Hopefully you're still paying attention as you stand there in the blazing light of...well nothing because you're under the canopy--beating your chest like a Pern-day Tarzan, because right at your feet is something of great interest. And even a little bit of value too. It won't be as amazing as some things, but if this is your last thing? Then you can be proud of it all the same.

Captain / Wa'ut

Is this your last foray into this great expanse? Who can say. The tiles are dwindling on the map at Basecamp, and you can't be certain there will be anything left for you to do tomorrow. You aren't dead, or fevered so far as you know, so that's something, right? You're just a little Northwest of the glacial lake, doing some reconnaissance in the dark jungle when you hear a strange noise off in the distance. You're ready for anything. To fight...to possibly flee...to scrounge and gather some new amazing resource.

Instead you break into a clearing full of thousands of jungle birds. They sing and fly in complex formations. It's as if you've found some hidden society of whersports, and they all seem to notice you, noticing them. Most of them end up on one branch or another, they really have no reason to fear you: most of them have only heard rumors of your two-legged kind in the jungle for the past sevenday. Almost none have even seen you. But there are a few who know. You've taken some of theirs out to Basecamp. Not you specifically, and technically it wasn't a kidnapping.

Those few who left wanted to go, and you know what so does this one. It lands on you, looks up at its birdfolk, and seems to say, so long folks!

Summer / Xena

It's almost over now, this expedition. You aren't even sure if there'll be a place left for you to go tomorrow, so you plan on making the most of it. You're headed to the Southern tundra, where jungle gives way to scrubby trees and eventually hardy grasses and then almost nothing at all but small shrubs. Things that can only survive the extreme cold and abnormal cycles of weather. You're looking for something, anything, of value. To take back, to make your own, to keep as a reward for a job well done. And find something you do. Scattered around some scrub-covered rocks and half-buried under snow.

Tiger / N'baatar

This may be the first, and last, you ever get to see of this Southern area. At least for the time being. The tiles are dwindling at a steady pace, it will take the very lucky to secure a final tile for yourself come tomorrow, so for now. Strap on those boots, and hit this soggy ground running. It's dark under the canopy, and stiflingly hot. The humidity is enough to strangle. It's never, ever, been near this hot at Dalibor. The air feels thick enough to cut with a blade, and every time you open your mouth it seems to slither down your throat like the snakes this area is now infamous for.

user posted image
Something slithers out of the darkness, it sounds like death

Maybe you were looking the other direction. Maybe you just didn't see in the shadows upon shadows, but a scream lets you know that your partner is being attacked, but by what? The tiny wher that has bonded to her is no match for this beast, and you have no bonded of your own who can reach to help. You and Busk are forced to hack and slash, hack and slash at an unending coil of death that you can barely see the beginning or end of. It has crushed Burl, is crushing them, is trying to devour them and still you press on until at long last you manage to fully sever the beast.

Its head still bites reflexively, making a fair attempt at crushing Burl's skull until you cut that part loose too. The dragons will have to fly in people to help you, the Whitehandler has been decimated by the beast, and you? You are unscathed.

-

Leo / Minn

You are nearing the end. Of the expedition, of the world possibly. What lies ahead of you is an endless snowfield broken only by the sharply inclining stone beneath that makes it seem as if you are walking into the sky itself. No trees can grow here, they've long ago become shrubs, and even those seem unable to survive at these heights. The air is thin, you feeel short of breath, and you notice blood on your gloves when you feel something wet on your face. Apoxia. There is no place on Pern high enough to cause it--until this day--so there is no word for the sickness you are suffering. This will be the end, for now. You turn to go, but stumble, a rock slips loose, and causes an echoing crash as it rattles down the steep slope beneath you.

user posted image
A distant crack, a deep rumble, then suddenly a wall of white roaring down upon you

It's like swimming. You'll remember that as you're carried downhill in a tumbling mass of what should be solid snow, but instead you find it more like water. You hear trees and stones rushing past you, but none of them strike you. The horror you would have known to hit a solid piece of ground at speeds this high. It sucks you down, down, down, and you struggle to swim your way back up but you don't know which way that is. You come to rest somewhere. Disorientated but unharmed. Without your wher you would die where you lay, but eventually you are dug out. Your partner is next, but their leg is broken, and their arm. At least the snow carried you low enough to make it an easy rescue.

-

Blot / Wynnifrid

You're right. It is very nearly the end. This will most likely be the last square you explore unless you get very lucky at the next-day's signups. So you relish it. The canopy is dark above you, but you feel somewhat carefree. It's been a mostly easy expedition, regardless of what is happening at camp. Some things you just can't avoid, right? You spend your time charting what you can, and time passes. You take it all in, every last moment, but know it's nearly time to go. Luckily, you've recognized some of the lichen from before, and have been gathering it all evening long, so you have bags full of things to take back with you. If this is your last, you won't be empty handed.

It isn't salad, but it didn't kill you

-

Rowana / Tor'n

Your luck could run out...but it doesn't. What is probably your final day here is spent in relative relaxation. The canopy is dark, the ground is soft underfoot. It's hot, but no more than usual, and nothing seems to want to devour you today. Which means you've gotten off pretty easy. You aren't sick, you aren't broken, you aren't battered. That means you can take in the beauty of what has happened, and just...breathe it all out. Even if you miss it, it's only a jump between back, well...unless the Weyrleadership bans people from coming here ever again...that's probably a possibility. You're just about to leave when you stumble upon a trove of mushrooms. Like little dirty smelly--but delicious treasures.

Cat / Eldrid

An unfortunate series of events. And unfortunately, they're going to continue. The jungle is dark and foreboding, there is no peace here for you as there might be for some of the others who are on their final day of exploring. Will everything be done by morning? Or will this place have a few more surprises in store for the last few adventurers.

user posted image
Something slithers out of the darkness, it sounds like death

As luck would have it, you will live to find out. You hear one little hiss and see just a little bit of movement and begin clobbering the living daylights out of whatever is creeping around in the Jungle because it can't be good. Luckily it wasn't your partner. It was a giant snake looking for a meal, and that meal? It isn't going to be either of you.

So you didn't really find anything, but you also weren't mauled and sent to the land of eternal fever otherwise known as the Infirmary. That could stand to qualify as a job well done.

-

Boo / C'ian

This is probably it for you, what with C'ian slated to drop dead from fever at any point now. Who even let him out of the Infirmary? Did he even go? Go to the infirmary C'ian! Nope, you don't listen. Big surprise there. You're cavorting through the jungle under the canopy like you're in a fairy tale told by the Harpers. You're probably even singing because...of course you are. Really you deserve to be eaten, but you aren't. Not by a cat, not by a snake, not by thousands of tiny insects. Nothing. Nothing attacks you. It's just the last beautiful day in the Jungle and then you start shouting something about butts. Beautiful butts? Big butts? It becomes obvious that you're talking about this fruit.

After spying said fruit, and obviously having been delirious for the past few candlemarks, you begin talking to trees, and non-existent birds, so you have to be physically removed and taken to the Infirmary where you belong so people can try and save your life.

+12 hours to cooldown 9AM PST 11/3

Rhia / Czervon

This is the end. Part of you knows it. Though you're faced with an expanse of white ice that seems limitless and overwhelming, you know that part of the world isn't for you. At least not today. The wind bites, the air is thin, and sometimes you and your partner are forced to stop to fend off dizziness and shortness of breath. Nowhere on Pern are there such altitudes as the ones you are climbing, not even the mountains of Telgar--though few have climbed beyond them. The ice gives way to barren wind-scoured rock. Not a single plant can live here, only snow, and ice. It falls all around you in earnest and it's like you're home again, where snow must be blanketed thick over the Weyr you spend your days. To your back is a great endless sea of green and the blue shimmer of the giant glacially-created lake. It is one of the best views anyone will ever have of the Basin, perhaps forever. Nestled in the craggy stone of the mountain you find a vein of ore, not unlike the ones found previous, and harvest it to take it back.

NPCs Tariv of Green Tarisk and Taralo of Blue Taralosk
Wher/Wher team
Square 130

Tarisk quiet! Scare all critter away! the Blue Wher grumped, even though he was making about as much noise.

Cold for critter, Tarisk pointed out, still making her way along in her hop-dance. Both of their handlers followed along, more focused on getting their jobs done rather than play around. Besides, if the Whers were scaring things off, it was all for the better - down here were reports of a great, horned beast that was rather hostile.

"I think we have this section done. South or east?" Taralo looked over her shoulder at the Greenhandler who was busy adding a bit of extra details on one of his sketches. It was rather important for one of his old trade to notice the little things, and he was doing that as much as possible.

"East until we hit the snow," Tariv replied, pulling out his chart to check their surroundings as much as possible. Perhaps their zone wouldn't run into glaciation like others had, but it was worth finding out for mapkeeping purposes.

"You got it," Taralo said with a nod, shouldering her shovel and walking briskly forward to take hold of Taralosk and get him going in the right direction again.

Carissa and Hirmon had to do some back tracking to get to the section of jungle that they had decided to explore on that day, but someone was going to have to sooner or later if they going to have a good understanding of the flora and fauna in the area. There wasn’t much in the way of fauna that the trio came across, more specifically no aggressive fauna that they would have to deal with in some form or another, or much of anything of note really. They did find mushrooms at least, and these were reportedly tasty if prepared properly, and even if neither of knew how to or if they did cared to try them someone was bound to back at camp.

Seeing as the expedition was winding down Tarele was willing to strike out again, though with the same healthy dose of caution that characterized his movements in the days of the expedition. Taresk was more than willing to get this done, even though he knew that also meant leaving the Continent of his handler’s birth he did want to head out again and find whatever they were going to find in the jungle. Hirmon and Hisk, who have been spending a lot of time in the jungles lately were also interested in coming along.

You’re brave taking on the great unknown on the southern edges of the map, brave and thorough it seems. Down here there is far more rock than grass and as you near the eastern portion of your quadrant you note it begins to raise in an incline. Interesting. You’re busy making all the notes you need on your map square while your partner wanders slightly ahead when a sudden noise draws your attention. It’s loud and at first you cannot place it - looking around you’re met by lots of white as snow covers most of the rocks and all of the incline you’ve encountered. Nothing seems amiss, no horned beasts are charging at you so what was that noise you heard?

A distant crack, a deep rumble, then suddenly a wall of white roaring down upon you

It takes awhile longer for your eyes to recognize that all the white ahead of you is coming towards you, and fast. Your whers are instrumental in your attempt at escape but the avalanche is upon you in no time at all, tumbling the four of you about as if you weigh nothing. Somehow though you are battered and bruised you and your partner come away with no major injuries. No doubt you’ll be sore for a few days but with no broken extremities you count yourself lucky as you make your way back to basecamp for the final time.

Mopsy / Tarele
Home sweet home, well kind of. Certainly you are unlikely to recall cold weather or snow from your childhood - the inner jungle with the thick air and hotter temperatures is likely more ‘right’ in your mind. Still you’re not going to back down from finishing the mission you set out with all the others from Dalibor and Grove to do. This is the end of it all and perhaps that has you feeling a tad more on edge than the times before. The ice isn’t helping matters making it difficult to get and keep your footing but with the whers’ assistance you and your partner are managing. So far things are going well - a loud crack makes you jump and hurry along. Wherever the ice gave way it wasn’t underneath you, thank Farnath. You’re towards the south eastern edge of your quadrant when you notice it, a glimmer beneath the ice. It might just be more ice but it’s worth looking into.

So there were treasures beneath the ice
*50 mark resource find*

Wher claws are useful for digging through snow and ice and they dig up the glimmer you’d noted rather quickly. Ore? Well someone back at camp will likely be eager to get their hands on this. Good find!

With that the map has been completed.
