Upcoming Flights/Runs:
Copper Laanasuth
Copper Zelsk

Upcoming Hatchings:
Red Cereza
Green Quince

Wedding bells ring out to celebrate the joining of Lord Callum to Lady Shuli. A grand gather has been put together with people from all over Pern coming to celebrate! Crescent is full to the brim with those who wish to show their support and those just looking to make (or spend) a few marks!

Copper Zelsk shook things up at the Copper Class graduation feast by beginning her run shortly after the knots were delivered to her handler. Bronze Osk won Zelsk's maiden run and now a sizable clutch lays on the sands hardening. Not to be outdone by the ground-bound copper, Copper Laanasuth took to the skies the very next day - though her flight was not as cut and dry as the wher's run had been. Offended by the force catch attempt of a presumptuous burgundy Laanasuth betweened to High Reaches Weyr where one of their dragons won her flight. Though she has returned to Dalibor and laid a large clutch for Dalibor's candidates the Weyr awaits the transfer of the dragon sire and his rider, Dalibor's newest Junior Weyrleader.

Kiveena didn’t really know what to think of the blind wherhandler, though she didn’t push the matter since Oreanda didn’t seem at all perturbed about it and had a Bronze to back her up. Once on Koloth Kiveena returned the smile though small and a little shaky, it wasn’t what they might find that she was worried about, it was what might find them. Kiveena’s nervousness was warranted evidently, but between her, the Prideleader, and the Bronze wher they managed to kill the huge feline with only minor injuries.

Tile: 30
Carissa wasn’t used to the heat of the Southern Continent having grown up in the Northern Continent and the farthest south she had been prior for any extended period of time was Igen Weyr as a wher Candidate. Junonth didn’t mind as much though she was worried about the prospect of hers getting injured, though they were well experienced with Thread fighting this was a different menace that they would have to face. This wasn’t the first expedition that she had came on, the first having been to the Northern Wastes and she came out of it all right enough so hopefully she would come out the same way this time as well.

Mutorin (Ride-along with Qivi!)
Wher/Dragon

@Captain

If Qivi thought SHE was excited, sugar you ain't seen nothin' yet. Mutt was taking samples of everything he laid eyes on, and what was too large/proved to be defensive-or-offensive (glossy leaves, acidic, otherwise something usually identified as dangerous), he sketched out in his botany book. Which, incidentally, was much harder to do in the rain. He pulled the brim of his hat down, to shield his pages and sketching stick from the rain as he held them close to him.

"Ya kiddin', love? This's incredible!" A wide, radiant smile lit Mutt's face, which would have been easier to see if it wasn't so sharding dark. He was sketching by glow, intelligent enough not to hang it from near his face; naturally insects were attracted to it, and there was no telling what else would be, either.

"Happy ta get me 'ands onnit, ya know....na tellin' if they'd be the sort, share info an' such if'n we're not 'ere rootin' abouts an' whatno. Could spend me life in 'ere, I could, if weren't for me love back home, aye?"

Musk was, for once, seriously on the look out. He knew this place was dangerous, they'd both witnessed the girl brought in with the snake head. Attacked, they said, and the felines as well. The serpents, the bugs, the creatures, with so much to keep an eye on, he couldn't very well be lazy and lax. There was too much at stake for that, and Musk paused periodically so that Mutt could put another sample - kept in a glass vial with a cork top - into the padded leatherbound box in one of his saddlebags attached to his harness. There were four in total, and Mutt filled them up each time he went out, to research and study them when he returned with Qivi to basecamp.

Norla and bronze Norsk - joining Ruoban and cyan Ruosk.

Keeping her guard up the bronzehandler was startled at the rustling in a nearby bush, jumping and readying herself for something far worse than what actually came out of the foliage. Color streaked through the air towards Ruoban, she didn’t realize it was a whersport until it finally settled down upon him. He didn’t seem to have any qualms with the new creature attaching itself to him and she shrugged, ”Nothing interesting, though you’ve found a new friend?” He offered it towards both herself and Norsk for closer inspection and she smiled, though the expression was slightly strained - it was hard to be relaxed and easy going when one’s heart was pounding in their chest. Nodding she lifted her eyes from the whersport to the cyanhandler, ”Planning on keeping it? What will you name it if you do?”

Marking important things on the leather square they had been given she tucked it away and nodded, ”I doubt we will find much more out here tonight, shall we try again tomorrow?”

---

Daylight came and saw the handler sleeping in proper quarters, Grove was very generous. Waking when Rukbat settled she had a cup of klah before she rejoined Ruoban, allowing him to once more set forth and pick where they would be exploring. It was downpouring but rain wasn’t about to stop the determined handlers, ”I assume you heard about the large snakes they found? One attacked a rider, nearly got her too. Be vigilant, I can’t afford to lose any good handlers out here.” Nor was she keen on dying herself.

Norsk watch too. Protect. Keep safe. No get hurt on Norsk watch. He seemed rather confident of himself despite the stories he’d heard when they woke and tended to meals before leaving. Rain pelted down on his bronze hide but he did not seem overly bothered by it.

B’tor & Tavistrath/ NPC Fraggle & Green Frask
Dragon/Wher
Square 26

B’tor was, in a word, excited. Last night’s find had been delightful, although not quite as delicious as he had hoped. Yes, he knew quite well that one should not go about eating random things, but Frask had started it. She had been the first to sample a bite of the odd blueish plant, so B’tor had simply followed suit. Tavistrath still wondered how he was still alive. Fraggle also wondered how the redhead and the green wher were still alive. Frask normally displayed more sense than that, but perhaps it was the weird greenrider’s excitable influence that had her being so… incautious.

Yet here they were, all four sallying forth once again into the jungle of the night. Both men went equipped with belt knives and short swords, prepared if not eager to find something more dangerous than an odd plant. Of course, B’tor had been obliged to quip that they could use their deadly blades to fight plants too, if occasion required. Fraggle had only sighed and wondered why he had agreed to join the man a second time.

Now they were plunging into a different part of the forest, seeking new adventure. Tavistrath still circled above, while the ground-bound trio sauntered forth in the same configuration as before: Frask leading, and the two humans hanging back just slightly, keeping their eyes peeled for signs of trouble.

Rider and cyan Ridesk - accompanying Carissa
@Mopsy93

To say he knew the rider he’d been partnered with would be a lie but what was life if not a series of events that lead to meeting new people? He would have liked to partner with someone he was familiar with, if only because familiar felt safe, but this was fine as well. Ridesk was grumpy about the whole ordeal but also a tad optimistic at the same time. Mapping was another form of learning - in fact she couldn’t recall knowing much about maps in the first place and now she could learn about those as well as learn about the environment. It didn’t benefit her to know things about the south but maybe it would come up someday. Knowledge was something she constantly sought so when Rider strapped a bag to her side and unsheathed his knife in order to go meet their dragonrider partner she did not complain - for once.

Waving the non-knife wielding hand (because brandishing a weapon at the greenrider likely wouldn’t have made the best impression on her) he grinned, ”’Lo there, I’m Rider. Not a rider but Rider all the same. It’s a pleasure to meet you, shall we get going?” Not waiting too long for introductions he set out next to her, keeping his eyes and ears peeled since he’d had an earful back at the base camp about snakes, felines, itchy plants, and even terrifying bugs. Gross.

Captain / Qivi

Hope you're ready to get washed away tonight! The rain started sometime during the day when the dragons were out cavorting over the open ocean...lake...thing...and it hasn't stopped since. The ground tries to suck you into it as you move, and the water tries to wash you away as if you're nothing more than leaf litter. You're just doing your best to finish your map, okay? So when you see glowing in the distance you don't really even care what it is, so long as it means you can pack up and head home. Soaked, huddled, and filthy, you cross into a small clearing amidst the roots coated top to bottom in beautiful bio-luminescent flowers. They seem to be glowing even more brightly thanks to the water, and here in the middle of them you can see nothing else. Every pore is brought into stark detail by their blue light. But what will you do with them?

This intricately beautiful flower is something to behold, surely someone would be interested in this

Leo / Ruoban

A new day. A new night. And oh look, it's a monsoon! You're dropped into the thick of it and immediately covered in a torrential downpour that slides off the dragon's wings. You know. The one whose back you just climbed down from via rope. The one that's just abandoning you here. Oh well. You spend most of the night trampling through the squelching mud and crawling insects looking for anything of value. You're just about to pack it up for the night, maybe catching a breather against this nice tree here, when you realize the lichen growing on it is looking mighty tasty.

Aika / Krys

It's the last of the open water...at least for awhile. You know that Dragonriders did a fly-over a few sevendays ago to make the preliminary map and they must've found more open water somewhere because there are still gold tiles back at Basecamp. But this? This was the last for now and you wanted it all to yourself. The sun is shining, you are not at all being subjected to the awful monsoon you can see over the jungle right now like a murderous haze. You and your dragon are one and ---

A sudden gust of wind is at your dragon's back, it pushes you down relentlessly to open water

The passing myth at Camp that only large dragons are affected by wind? Greatly exaggerated by people who don't understand basic science. Wait, that's most of Pern. Oh well. The unexpected down-draft seems to crush both you and your partner together in a tangle of wingspars and membranes. Talons. Necks. Tails. You can't between twined together, and you can't fly when crumpled, so you both plunge into the alarmingly freezing water below.

Luckily dragons float, mostly. So eventually you're able to extract yourselves and make it home. Yet another pair announcing their presence by bringing a good dragon-sized amount of water with them into the Bowl. It's yourselves you need to look after now. Torn membranes, broken wingspars, broken bones? The tally will be impressive indeed once it's all added up.

+8 hours added to cooldown: 10/27 5AM PST

Mopsy / Carissa

Back at it again, and right out into the rain. Luckily the quadrant you've picked has a thick canopy overhead. You are well protected and really only need to worry about how squishy the footing is. Unluckily, you've picked the quadrant with the giant murderous cats in it, and they seem mighty hungry and cranky after being soaked all day long. Don't let them fool you though, they are great swimmers.

So bright, you'd think you wouldn't miss it stalking

The beast pounces on your partner Rider and begins mauling him immediately. You and Ridesk only have moments to react--but you've trained for this. One way or another. You and the wher come to the Handler's aid but not before the cat has done a moderate amount of damage to him, and you get a few scratches for your troubles as well. You'll have to help him out on foot until your dragon can get you to safety.

-

Sakoru / B'tor

They say, the best things come to those who wait. And maybe that's true, but definitely not in this jungle. You all ride down a rope attached to your dragon like heroes in some Harper's Ballad, all while the monsoon does its level best to slip you right off into the abyss. You make it, but, it might take a little bit of searching to pick up the boundary of your area and keep your map up to date. You know what really loves water? Maybe you don't, but you will eventually. Things start popping underfoot and eventually you find a breath of time to shake out some glows and take a look.

Tile 66
Dragon/wher
L'aars of Iron Jaireth/NPC Sadie of Green Sadisk

So far, he was lucky. Despite a miserable second day, he successfully brought another resource back to camp. Which, while far from the most exotic find by a rider or handler, meant he was better off than quite a few other pairs. This jungle was dangerous and needed mapping. With the assistance of the handler from the day before, he trekked back into the wilds.

With warnings of 'jungle snakes' and big felines ringing in his ears, he explored beyond the banks he mapped the previous day. Sadie, far less cautious than he, led the way with brutish determination. She had a large knife in hand, and made a habit of swinging it at anything remotely suspicious. Thus far, a few plants suffered her eternal wrath.

S'vor, Obelion of Bronze Obelisk
Dragon/Wher
Square - 67

S'vor could not ride in with his dragon this time, but had instead teamed up with a bronzehandler--at Absinth's insistance he bring the biggest wher along he could find if she could not come with him--to begin exploration on the ground. The big, burly dark-haired man was a talkative, friendly sort. Yet he was also proving bright and thoughtful; a capable conversationalist and a fine handler.

Obelisk make first tracks. If danger, can fight, can smell. Big snakes. Big felines. Best one fight, you help if need.

"Let's hope it doesn't come to that!" Obelion commented with a chuckle. The big man looked to S'vor as he swung his short Sword to clear away some of the thick foliage. S'vor nodded in agreement.

"Back at the base camp I certainly heard of creatures I'd like not to see in my time. Yet have no fear, Obelisk--if you need aid in your fight, Yours and myself will have your back. I'm no slouch with a short Sword, and I'm certain Obelion here can handle himself. The three of us will manage."

Obelion grinmed. He knew from speaking to the greenrider he was being optimistic for all their sakes. Everyone knew one thing by now: this expedition came with risks, and no small ones at that. Still, some had already found wonderful things. The two men and broze wher carried themselves warily and carefully. There was no need to rush...only fools rushed in in the face of possible danger.

Obelisk kept pausing to cast his large, thick head about and scent the air. The two men trusted the wher to sense danger that they could not. S'vor could feel Absinth in his mind. She was concerned but had also reluctantly conceeded Obelisk was a large, capable looking beast. Hopefully she was correct and Hers would be kept from harm...

B’tor & Tavistrath/ NPC Fraggle & Green Frask
Dragon/Wher
Square 40

Well, wasn’t that a grand adventure! B’tor, Fraggle, and their collection of greens had just barely made it back to camp the day before. Despite his general inclination to take life none too seriously, the dragonrider had been quite glad to bring all of that survival-type stuff with him. (Apparently his Turns as a fisher had instilled some sort of sense in his little brain). Fraggle was terribly unimpressed with the entire monsoon, but B’tor had coaxed him into coming back for a third go round. Perhaps the greenhandler was still interested in adventure, but more than likely it was B’tor’s threats to be as annoying as possible if he didn’t come along.

Tavistrath was growing thoroughly disgruntled by the entire experience, mostly because she had returned to camp on the ground and absolutely sodden last night. So far, her rider hadn’t encountered any serious trouble other than the weather variety, but she didn’t feel any better about the whole expedition. Now, however, she was keeping a weather eye out for storms too – because apparently B’tor risking his nose forging into the untamed jungle just wasn’t enough.

Yalenia and C'ian
Dragon/wher
Number 8
(If possible, Yalenia would be my preferred injured person)

Oh yes, well he hadn't made friends last time. S'idon had injured himself and the pink dragon was telling anyone who would listen that a great, giant sky snake had bitten him on the back of the head. C'ian actually rather admired the imagination of the pink dragon. They had decided to sit the next day out, though but pointed him in the direction of a wherhandler with a very grumpy wher who had requisitioned the buckets of the base camp. C'ian approached the pair, careful to stay out of range of the very angry looking green wher.
"G'day there, I understand that you need a ride. You can buddy up with us."

The short woman, Yalenia, seemed to sigh a little and then nodded.
"C'ian wasn't it. You're very loud around the Weyr."
"Er... Am I?"
"Yes, very much."
He grinned, "Well, you remember who I am so it can't be too bad!"

They were off into the air after a moment of waiting, C'ian ready to tell stories to anyone they found on their journey. Heck, he was even regaling Yalenia with a story about that time he found buried treasure in the lake. She seemed oddly bemused but really, he had legitimately seen treasure in the lake!

Oh Mine you are positively annoying at times.
WHY ARE IT NOT SHUT UP??? WHY. ARGH. HE. NAUGHTY. TERRIBLE FOR STEALTHY. ARGH. IT HAVE TOO MANY WORDS.

So if there really was anything out here... Well, it would be an interesting expedition to say the least.

NPCs Amalthea of Green Amalthesk, Barret of Blue Barresk
Square: 31

"Now do you understand what I was trying to tell you?" he asked, crossing his arms as they stood at the edge of yet another unmapped square. "That junglesnake almost killed that girl."

"And someone still needs to map this place," she countered. "Might as well be us." They were both wearing goggles against the sudden monsoon, standing on what appeared to the humans of the pair to be some sort of fallen log. Whatever it was, it kept them out of the muck. Thankfully, their whers were both strong enough to carry their humans. "So, we go further in. We wouldn't be of any help to the healers anyway, and you know it. So let's stay out of their way by going in."

Barret sighed and pushed himself off the log, landing somewhat awkwardly on Barresk's back. He was forced to pull his legs up to keep them out of the mud below, and he noticed that Amalthea had to do the same once she was finally on Amalthesk's back. It wasn't the most pleasant of rides, but it was certainly easier than trying to wade through this downpour. The glows were of little help in the rain, and they both knew they'd need to get warmed up and dried off as soon as they were back at base camp. But, for the moment at least, it was necessary to forge ahead. Though the argument would also be continued later. Barret didn't like Amalthea returning out here, not now that there were known, and rather obvious, dangers. Giant felines, the junglesnakes, and Faranth knew what else.

The whers tried to see through the gloom, but the night was made all the darker by the storm overhead. Before, at least, the starlight would sometimes shine through the trees. Now, no light shone. It made the jungle eerie, almost menacing. And it was setting all four of them on edge.

L'igi and green Jasmith with ride-along Oreanda and bronze Osk {@Ruin}
Dragon/Wher Square 13

Having had an opportunity to dry off (luckily, the warm jungle air made catching a cold unlikely after the pair were soaked in the rainstorm the last time they went out), L'igi again entered the jungles around Grove, convincing Oreanda to accompany him once more. The two had had some time to chat more on the way back to the base camp, and while they dried off, and they had found out further information about each other... some basic history, that L'igi was a recent transfer to Dalibor, the existence of L'igi's twin brother, and eventually even some stories about her life as a Prideleader.

With Jasmith once again in the trees above the trio on the ground, L'igi and Oreanda had decided to cut in a little past some unexplored areas to hit a section on the far edge of the jungle. Chopping as before at any vines or foliage that got in their way, he kept more quiet this time, having learned about Oreanda's need to keep her ears available for figuring out what was around her. Their trip was, therefore, silent beyond the buzzes, chirps, hoots, and various other noises of the jungle around them, punctuated by the swish swish of legs pushing through undergrowth and the chop crack of L'igi's blade. In the back of his mind, L'igi could feel Jasmith's concern... she was not a fan of being so far from Hers in such a dangerous place.

Tor'n and Teraath / Toumke and Tousk (T-Team!)
Dragon/Wher
Square: 7

"See, that wasn't so bad, Toumke!"

Toumke glared at his soon to be ex-friend/partner. "Not so bad?! We nearly drowned! I'm still getting water out of my ears," he exclaimed darkly.

Tor'n just laugh and waved aside the handlers concerns. "A little water never hurt anyone. Besides, we never would have found that fire lizard egg."

Toumke grudgingly allowed that that had been a lucky find. "Fine. Just next time try to keep us on dry land."

Tor'n shrugged, smiling easily at his friend before looking over the next areas that needed exploring. "You're wish is my command!" he declared, pointing out a spot that at least looked less watery.

Toumke glanced at it and sighed. He supposed it would do. At least poking around in the jungle made Tousk happy. The wher practically bounced with delight at all the excitement. She wasn't afraid to head out there and take anything that came their way.

Tor'n beamed, itching for the chance to explore some more, even after yesterdays mishaps with the river. Maybe they could find an excuse for Teraath to get his claws dirty too. The vain dragon had no qualms telling them all just how much smarter he was to stay out of the raging river. The fact he'd been too big to even land in it had been dismissed. Show off. A slip in the mud would do him good.

Czervon of Blue Czervosk (Der and Gray Desk Ride-Along!)
Wher/Wher
Square: 37

@Rii

It had been an absolutely miserable time since it'd started raining, truthfully. The monsoons were ridiculous; everything Czervon carried was saturated with water, it felt like. His clothing, his gear, his boots. He'd gone back to base camp and the whersport he'd found a couple of days ago hadn't left their space, so naturally it seemed he was stuck with it unless he could manage to sell it off to someone once they got back to Dalibor. Of course, it all depended on if the little creature wouldn't just fly back to him once he'd shuffled it off on someone else.

Luckily, it didn't seem inclined to keep them up all night with songs and such, though it did seem to be capable of some sort of song. It was just curious, and looked to only be inclined to get into everything. All the same, given they were staying on-loan from Grove, there wasn't much in there to investigate.

He'd managed to not drown, and done his best to reassure his weyrmate that he wasn't going to let him take a nosedive into deepwater horizons, either. But he'd be damned if he wasn't worried as sharding shells about it. The snake-attacks settled at the back of his mind; he was more concerned for those, than for the sabercats that lingered somewhere within. Those could be killed, he reasoned, much more easily than a constrictor, so he felt.

It was hard to not worry about something you could hardly see, and it seemed the deeper they went into the jungle, the darker the world became.

"Be careful," he spoke up quietly to Der as he hacked away at the undergrowth, "Don't like this place. Doesn't feel right, maybe I'm just being paranoid, but all these attacks, they've got me shardin' nervous."

He wasn't laughing now.

Der hadn't thought much of the rain aside from it being annoying and miserable, soaking his clothes, armor, pack, and everything else. But when water had suddenly gushed and rose around his ankles, and then up his calves to his knees, he'd felt a familiar choking panic.

It's happening again oh Faranth it's happening again

Somehow he kept his head, although he was a pretty ghastly shade beneath his tan. It helped that Czervon kept his. When it surged up to Czervon's knees instead of his, he ended up temporarily taking high ground with his wher - less for his sake, he told himself, and more to keep tiny Desk from getting washed away. But it was really for him too, because even if he didn't get the screaming meemies from water anymore, he was still terrified of drowning.

He was going to cling to Czervon extra, extra hard tonight, back at the Weyr.

High ground paid off, though, when he noticed a giant, succulent-looking fruit and managed to pluck it so the pair could take it back to camp. Awesome. The day wasn't going to be a total write-off.

The next day started better - which was to say, it wasn't raining. He could deal pretty well with 'not flooding' as opposed to 'flooding and possibly drowning'.

It was dark enough in the depths of the jungle that neither of their whers needed goggles, even before nightfall. Which was good, because the humans couldn't see in the dark as well as they could anyway.

"We'll be alright, the four of us." He tried to sound confident, but really, he wasn't any less wary than Czervon; he was just still so deeply interested in spite of the potential dangers that he had to keep going. "We'll keep a sharp lookout."

Oreo & Osk With L'igi!

It was raining so hard! But she loved it. She'd grown up in the ocean practically, what was a little water behind her ears. Osk, well, he wasn't quite so fond. How could he look his best and be prideful as he wanted to be, while looking a little soggy around the edges. The going was slippery, Anda stayed mostly on Osk's back for fear of sinking into some unimaginable pit of ooze, but she wanted to make sure they were close enough to their partner to help. He was the one who didn't have a bonded of his own down here.

She appreciated the silence. It gave her time to think. About other things. About feelings. She wasn't distracted--how could she be with a dragon's thoughts above, and Osk snooting around through the foliage. But she'd learned long ago how to make it quiet. "Maybe we'll find something amazing this time," she offered softly to her companion. Hoping he didn't mind being so quiet on their trip out. She did appreciate that he was willing to trust a blind Handler on such an expedition. Some were not so understanding.

Cat / L'aars

Another night. And oh look, the rain has not ceased. Some enterprising Dragonriders rode out in the day and discovered distant mountains roiling the clouds off over the basin. Seems like there might be no end to this deluge. Did Grove just pick the wrong season? Yet you are on a mission, you cannot stop come Thread or...well...high rot-filled water, so you press on. You make your map, you try to denote when the trees are less thick and when the canopy is so well-woven that you cannot see a single start. Near the end of your shift a pair of red eyes seems to peer out at you from the shrubs. Your partner is quick to run at it, weapon brandished, chopping both eyes off neatly. Wait...you bring the glow-light closer and. Oh. What a relief.

Ruriko / S'vor

The monsoon continues, washing away scents, dead foliage, and the hope and joy of all explorers because...really...rain?? You and your partner slog through the muck for candlemarks. All you're doing is trying to finish this map. Your territory follows the edge of the giant body of water you were only just flying over during the days previous, but it sweeps off to the east far outside anyone's zone. Meaning that curiosity? Will just have to wait for another time. You're almost done for the night, when something lashes out at you from the darkness.

Something slithers out of the darkness, it sounds like death

It latches onto the entirety of your forearm and begins sawing its teeth back and forth, working its jaws to take in what it thinks--for now--is just a smaller animal. Though, compared to its thirty-foot length...you are a small animal. Its coils follow it out from the muck, moist and covered in rotten leaves and insects. It wraps you swiftly and begins crushing. You feel something break, and then something else, but you can't differentiate it from the general agony of having the life squeezed out of you. But your partner is there. He begins slashing in earnest at the beast as his wher joins the fray and in short order--though he takes a bite or two himself--they have it killed.

It takes them longer to chop it off of you. And even longer to get you out. You will remember very little after that until you are back at camp, but you will know that you came very, very, very close to having this be your last day of Expedition. However within half a day you'll begin to feel a bit more like your old self. Once the healers put you to right that is.

Sakoru / B'tor

Think of how many amazingly delectable things must be out in this jungle, considering it hasn't stopped raining for well over a day now. In fact, the Dragonriders who rode out when Rukbat was still up, reported that this rain might well continue. What if it lasts for the whole season? What then? Oh well. No one has died from a little rain, so they just keep sending you out. Unfortunately you chose the territory crossed by a river. It is now swollen, angry, and hungry for human flesh...no wait. That doesn't seem right. OR DOES IT. So maybe it doesn't want to eat you, but it definitely tries every time you are forced to cross it, which hopefully is just once--to finish your map. That's totally okay though because as you are crossing it you see some weird things poking up through the floating fronds.

Goood morning Jungle Basin! And what a beautiful morning indeed. The trees are bright green, the rivers are full of water, and the rain is still causing a real kerfuffle. See. Everyone thinks it shouldn't be falling, and it thinks it should, and it wins. Luckily you're still out on the edges. Wait no, that's bad, because there isn't a thick canopy. So you spend your entire night soaked to the bone, but you know what. You get it done. You are a real hero in this bedtime story. You finish, you go back to camp, and then you become a nightmare. Well, your partner does. See, she ends up being covered head-to-toe in an angry looking rash. You? Apparently you aren't bothered by any of this. Anyway, her's clears up fairly quickly so it wasn't even anything too bad, as long as she didn't scratch it too much.

Summer / Amalthea

You're soaked before you even get to your part of the map. How couldn't you be. To escape this storm you'd have to go where dragons fight Fall, and unfortunately you need to be on the ground. From the moment you set foot down there, to the moment you eventually leave, you're fighting against nature. The insects here are out in force trying to bite and claw their way into you as if you're nothing more than a ripe fruit in a hard shell. You can't leave though, you have a job to do. You get it all done, every last treetop mapped, and then it's back to the Weyr with you. You think you're totally fine, then you strip your wet cloths off and see something moving beneath your skin.

After / L'igi

Monsoon, why did it have to be a monsoon. You find a little river in your territory that you are certain is no more than a few lengths across, but now it may as well be a roaring channel like the one between the two halves of the Western Islands. Okay, it isn't that big, but it's terrifying. Likely to swallow a man. You and your partner spend your night tromping so many insects.

Osk even manages to eat quite a few and assures you both that they are absolutely delicious. Neither of you probably take him up on that offer. Still, nothing bites you. You finish your map, and when you get back to camp to strip out of your soaked clothing, nothing is amiss. All in all...best trip ever?

Row / Tor'n

Woo day two of the deluge! Well, night. At least it can't be exceedingly hot, when it's exceedingly damp. Although boy is it trying. You spend most of your night in the thick of it mapping out your area. You can't keep dry, you can't keep cool, so you just gotta keep moving. And you do, until you realize you have stumbled into the biggest cache of mushrooms you have ever seen. Then you kep moving, and gathering. A feast for the world!

If you guys thought the storm was over, you guys were wrong. Just trying to rappel your way down from the dragon nearly sends you slipping to your death, but you know what, you've picked a super thick area of the jungle. And...it really doesn't seem so bad. The canopy keeps out all starlight, all moonlight, and the ground is fairly clear. Nothing can really grow here under the shade of such mighty trees. Oh there's moisture, there are rivulets running through the ground under your feet, but nothing like yesterday. It all seems to be shunted off to either side of this area. You map, you finish up, you head home. If you have the distinct impression upon changing out of your clothes that you should have been covered in horrific hives and rashes, well, you must've just gotten lucky this time. You even dried out a little bit overnight.

NPC Wynnifrid of Green Wynnifrisk
Dragon/Wher
Square: 25

Wynnifrisk was still none too pleased to be there. She wanted to stay back at camp, even if camp was a chaotic mess at times. She had seen too many people get hurt, even if Wynnifrid hadn’t been hurt at all. But again, the woman insisted. So Wynnifrisk was at her side once again.
“C’mon F’ox my boy! Wynnifrisk and I can’t be the only ones searching!” Wynni was excited. After finding that peculiar fruit yesterday, she had hopes of finding something else amazing as well.

Above them Bismuth circled, checking out the area before swooping down to land. She was lucky she was small enough ti fit in the jungle. F’ox just grumbled quietly and leaned against her for a moment.
“Don’t get too far ahead not Wynnifrid.”
“My boy did I not tell you to call me Wynni? Wynnifrid’s a damned mouthful that you don’t need to bother with.” Her smile was almost infectious and F’ox had to stop himself from smiling at her. That would only encourage her.

The greenhandler and her wher once again took point, marching through the jungle, keeping their eyes peeled. Even if Wynnifrisk herself was glued to her handler’s side. Occasionally, though, the green would peel away to investigate something. It seemed Wynni’s curiosity was getting to her. And well, she might as well look around while she could.

Ruoban & Ruosk (w/ Norla & Norsk @Ivy)
Wher/Wher; Square 39

"I did. I'm good with most beasties, but giant snakes that can swallow you whole? No thanks." Maybe they couldn't actually swallow a person in one bite but Ruoban would prefer not to tempt fate by meeting one of the creatures face-to-face. Another beautiful night under the stars would be much appreciated. "Glad to hear that I'm one of the good ones. If I wasn't, I'd just be snake bait to you, huh?" The rain hadn't bothered Ruoban much at first, but as time passed on, he could feel it getting to him. It had long since drenched his clothes, plastered his hair to his scalp, and begun to seep into his bones. He was looking forward to getting warm again once they were finished with their section of the map. In comparison, Ruosk looked as pretty as ever with the droplets spilling down her cyan hide. She was the one to spot the lichen when they took a break next to a thick tree, her bright eyes peering up at the soaked herb. 'Good for Ruosk's?' Ruoban leaned in close. "Maybe? What do you think, Norla?"

---

So far, they had been fortunate enough to come out of the jungle without a scratch. The big question was: would their luck hold today? Ruoban glanced down at the treetops as their dragon escort neared their chosen piece of ground. He hadn't spent much time aboard dragons before and he wondered if the novelty would be gone by the end of this expedition. At least for the present moment, it was wondrous to see the jungle from above. "Looks like we'll be soaked through again. Guess it's just nature's way of saying we need to bathe more." The klah he drank before they left was still warming his belly. He wondered how long that would last.

NPC Jo'van
Dragon/Wher
Square: 48

They had been traveling for some time. Janora was a member of his wing, and on her behalf he had chosen to face the dangers of the jungle. The man was a hardened individual, fairly stoic in nature. When the time was right he proved himself to be highly-opinionated, and unwilling to back down. He had earned Janora's respect and in turn she had earned his. The blackrider was an honor-bound individual, and so he wasn't planning on giving up in his quest to cut through the harsh vines and stamp through the winding river. He was a perceptive man who, thankfully, had his wits about him. Yendev and Yensk had both informed him of, and shown him, the dangers that could be encountered out in the fresh jungle terrain. Jo'van had visited Janora and seen her injuries firsthand. He was thankful that the woman had been brought back to the base camp in-time. His black, Kynareth, had developed a deep respect for Falkreath. The pair of them were clutchbrothers, which served only to bolster their bond. They performed wonderfully together in drills, and Kynareth seemed to have a healthy enough fear of his brothers temper. Yes, it would be a crying shame to see the pair of them split apart.

Yendev demanded to be the one to go ahead, and Yensk, naturally, trod ahead of His. The bronze knew what to expect now, given what he had encountered on their travels with Janora. It was the snakes that they kept an eye out for. They would not be caught off guard again... Yendev blamed himself for what happened to Janora. He had wanted to keep her safe--he ought to have. It was hardly fair that the burgundyrider was now left to suffer. She was made of tough stock and so he was sure she'd pull through just fine. She had to. He would never forgive himself if she, well...

I know, I will think only good thoughts... for her sake, he sent to the burly bronze wher. Yensk was much younger than he, and so Yendev often worried that he wasn't a solid enough partner for the bronze. Being a man in his sixties it was hard to say how much time he had left. He had always been in good health, it was true, but there were zero doubts that Yensk's bones were far less brittle than his own. He had only been with the wher for a short time. Even so, it felt like a lifetime to the older harper. Hopefully Yensk would attain glory on this new adventure and then, undoubtedly, he would feel as if he had done right by the beast.

Jo'van kept on, silence reigning between himself and the man before him. He would take care of the older man, if need be. He knew that he too was out here for nobility's sake. Hopefully, together, they would do Janora proud.

W’ryn and Earth with Yoris and Yorisk
Dragon/Wher
Square 77

A new day, a new adventure waiting to be had. The last had been uneventful, though whether the Bluerider regarded that as boon or burden was not clear. A hefty reward for having brought back a fish was nothing to sneeze at however, and already she had been babbling to Earth about affording a second canine. In turn he had became even more laconic than usual, letting out only a rumbling, Be careful, as he made slow loops over the tree tops, following the tug of his rider’s presence. He could not see any of them through the foliage but was unerring in knowing her precise location. The wher and her Handler he was less concerned with.

W’ryn pushed through the greenery that blocked their way, too impatient even to wait for the Red that had agreed to lead them. Yorisk for her part was thrilled—her eyes were a crimson swirl, her jaws already parted, ready to clamp down on the first thing that should present itself. There would be no diplomacy with that one. Yoris followed in the rear, casting suspicious glances over his shoulder at every twig snap or watery drip.

Blot / Wynnifrid

The rain is still coming down hard. It's unavoidable. At least you know there are a dozen other teams out there suffering along with you, just doing their best to serve two Weyrs and Pern at large. It's slow going, but you stick with it. You know if you can just get this mapped--the sooner the better--then you can go back and warm up by a fire. You probably try to keep the thought of snakes, bugs, poison, and other such things far out of your mind. It isn't easy, and things are loud with the rain trickling and the night-time jungle noises. That's why your new friend possibly terrifies you when it flings itself out of the darkness and into your hands.

Your segment seems to be lined by rivers on almost all sides. Which means you may as well be in a swamp right about now. It's been raining for well over a day, all the rivers are flooded, and you're up to your thighs in muck and grime just trying to draw this sharding map. Who even thought this was a good idea anyway? You might want to take your map and shove it up their--a hiss from the darkness breaks off any thought you might've been having because now...you know it's go time.

Its on you instantly, you don't even have a chance to react. And if you'd been a VTOL on the wall during the other maulings, you'd have a fairly good idea as to where this is going. It plays out almost by design. These are such simple creatures, really. Is it so evil to be hungry and find a new soft and defenseless food source has moved in? Well, defenseless if it wasn't for those pesky whers.

The whers are on it in a second, but they just can't fight thirty feet of muscle. You feel a series of snaps echo from within your body as it crushes you. Toes? Fingers? It won't be enough to keep you from coming back out here--if you're brave enough--but by the time they've butchered the beast off of you it's apparent you won't be coming out for quite awhile. At least your partner is totally fine.

Zane / Jo'van

The whole area smells putrid. Rotten. You probably aren't sure if it's the rain or something else, and no one has the answer. This is your country to chart. You head out with your partner but find there really isn't much to mark. The canopy is just so thick that it drags all the water together into rivulets that run like small waterfalls down on top of you from more than a hundred feet up. The staggering size of the trees this deep in can be awe-inspiring, and you wonder how much bigger they'll get later on.

You begin to slip and slide, as if the ground itself has forsaken you. Then you feel the biting. The tearing. It's as if the entire mass of leaf litter has turned into giant tearing beetle-like insects. They swarm you and your partner in what seems like an instant. They're trying to crawl into your mouth, they're trying to eat out your eyes. Yensk goes mad and ends up half-mauling his own Handler in an attempt to help. If only there was firestone. If only there was someone to help.

It is your dragon that saves you. Maybe. All he can do is scoop you into his arms, hoping that his own hide is strong enough to protect from what is assaulting you, and take to the air with barely enough room left to breath much less between. The Bowl becomes a chaotic firestorm as soon as you appear as thousands of carnivorous insects are loosed on the ground. Vines and roots snarl around you, leaving you to wonder if anything was left behind of your dragon. Your partner is a living nightmare, and you might be worse.

Neither of you will go out on this Expedition again. Perhaps any Expedition ever.

+12 hours to Cooldown: 9AM PST 10/28

Tobes / W'ryn

Your patch of Jungle seems to toe the line of true jungle and forest. On the Eastern side it is thick and impossibly dark, but on the Western side the canopy has small gaps through which you can see the stars and sometimes one of the moons. That is, when you aren't being blinded by rain and the sky isn't a huge tumble of clouds. Soaked to the bone, you spend your time fixing up your map so others might get a glimpse of what is ahead. It is quite good that you and your partner are so astute, because a real prize is sniffed out from the darkness--saved from the creeping moisture.

L'aars of Iron Jaireth/NPC Sadie of Green Sadisk
Dragon/Wher
Tile: 65

Monsoon season was not the best time to map out this jungle. L'aars didn't even know so much rain could fall from the sky without ceasing. Waterlogged, his mood declined into agitated silence. He never talked much, but he'd dissolved into nonverbal grunts in response to his companion's constant chatter. Sadie was an enthusiastic scouting partner. Quiet was not her specialty.

"We're gonna find somethin' today, I can feel it," Sadie declared. "Maybe one of them giant snakes. Ah, jungle snakes theys calling them right?"

SADISK EAT SNAKES.

"Right'o. Good eatin' I bet."

L'aars shook his head. They were dangerous creatures. This place was full of them. Wanting to find danger was a foolish endeavor. Bringing back resources was a better fate than mauled by a constrictor. If he was lucky he might find something interesting that wouldn't try to kill him. Apparently a few people had wherpsports take a liking to them, or found firelizard nests.

Now, if only his companion would be quiet...

"Find anything interesting?" She was soaked to the bone, but at least one of them was enjoying themselves. She didn't understand a thing Mut was talking about, but that didn't stop her enthusiasm at all. She was just as excited as he was when he found something and she even started trying to help him bottle stuff and pointing out things she thought looked interesting.

Dekandaeth mostly just tried to keep the rain off of her with his bulk or wings. She kept darting out and making his life difficult, as she did. "What about this? Do you have this one?" She pointed at a leaf. It looked like every other leaf to her and it might have been the same one she pointed out the past four times, but she was trying!

Norla and bronze Norsk - accompanying Ruoban
@Leo [[Pretend I replied before Ruin. XD Wooops!]]

It was an uneventful night and for that Norla was glad - she wasn’t fond of the things she’d heard back at the camp and if not for Norsk’s insistence that they were needed she would have returned to Dalibor. Surely her sisters were back home enduring the winter there wondering where she had run off to… no sooner did she bring them back home with her than she was off again. Hopefully they understood this was no cruel joke on her part - she wanted to mend things between herself, Larka, and Kala. It would take time. Perhaps she would find something in the jungles she could bring back to them, she’d heard some people had found flowers that lit up the night; they would like flowers wouldn’t they?

Thoughts were interrupted by Ruosk’s find and she leaned in to study it, ”I wouldn’t eat any until someone back at camp clears it but since it isn’t brightly colored, defended by any thorns, and doesn’t smell terrible I’d think it is harmless. Let’s take some back with us, okay?”

----

Another day passed and then night came - not that the day did anything to end the rain that was falling. It was tiresome and beginning to grate on her nerves but it wasn’t the worst thing that could happen so she didn’t complain. Norsk and Ruosk were capable of keeping them from being swept away by any rising tides should they near the river. Landing on the ground with her partner she chuckled, ”I suppose we should take the hint then. Maybe the rain will let up so we can actually appreciate the jungles for what they are. A hot sticky mess full of bugs and things that want to kill us.” A bitter laugh followed as she let him choose the path they’d take once more. Norsk was mindful as he followed behind, searching the shadows of the jungle for any signs of movement or noises.
