Western Hold welcomes new blood in the form of a young couple, Lord Holder Basasius and Lady Holder Baria. A grand Gather is being hosted by Western Hold to welcome their new Lord and Lady.

While the new Lords settle into Western there has been talk and speculation about the western continent's other Hold. It has been two turns since his wife's passing in the south, when will Lord Callum decide to take up a new wife?

Spring has woken an abundance of plant life across Pern with intermittent spring showers helping to sate the growth's never ending thirst. With the end of snow and cold comes Thread once more; Dalibor's wings have no doubt been reduced due to losses over the winter but none the less they persevere.

She felt uncomfortable. It was like there were a bunch of little bugs crawling under her hide. It would be easy enough for her to contribute this discomfort to her human since he'd been having a lot of trouble with returning memories and returning people. Emotions of all sorts easily crawled across their bond. However, she knew that was not the case. This itchy restless feeling was hers and hers alone. These were dramatic times, but this had nothing to do with that drama. She just needed to move. To get up and spread her wings, to have all eyes on her.

Rhasa was aware that his firelizard was getting ready to rise. Since Hope was aware of it as well, she tried to bother him with it as little as possible. He had enough on his plate without her delivering extra problems. She would not make his life harder. As a result, she had been somewhat of a recluse, as much as a protective firelizard like Hope could be a recluse, in the days leading up to the flight.

No more. She wasn't going to put up with this itchy restlessness, this avoiding, this change to routine, for any longer. One chilly winter afternoon, she decided that she had had enough. The firelizard darted out of the lower caverns and spent a moment hovering in the weyrbowl. The faint glow of her cyan hide made a frosty contrast against the snow coating Dalibor. One snowflake amongst many. Of course, this snowflake would be trickier to catch than most.

Hope parted her jaws to release a gentle yet commanding trill. She was rising. Would some of the fine firelizards who called this Weyr home grace her with their presence? Once the call was out, she hovered for only a moment later before darting off into the sky. She didn't go soon enough to leave any chasers completely in her dust, but they'd certainly be in for a struggle.

The best thing to be doing on a winter afternoon? Baking of course! Dolly loved the rich smells and warm air of the kitchen. Today she was even working on something new, helping with the meat dishes for tonight's dinner. Her best skills were in pastries, but Dolly knew if she ever wanted to be a journeyman she was going to have to work on other things. Even if it would still take turns. She had her regular rider duties after all.

Not that Berry minded. Food was food, even if pies were the best. The pudgey purple sat on one of the mantles, eyeing the cooking meat hungrily. Fortunately, he was an obediant pet and no one would have surprise tooth marks in their dinner. All at once though, he was alert. Some sixth sense linking fire lizards together had let him hear Hope's call. He liked Hope. Their bondeds spent time together sometimes. He didn't often pull together the energy for a chase, and even less often won, but maybe he would this time. It might be fun!

Berry took flight across the kitchen, and, with Dolly's cry of annoyance, snatched a piece of meat she was cutting. Before she could argue, he was off out the door, meat trailing in his claws. Surely Hope would like a present? It was cold outside and he had warm, tasty meat! Of course, Pumpkin would probably say he was a silly male, but Hope wasn't Pumpkin. Hope was Hope.

Berry made it outside, just barely in time to spot the little cyan as she rose into the sky. Goodness this would be hard. She was so fast! And so hard to see! Berry gave a playful trill of his own and tried his very best to keep pace. Berry was here! And he'd brought a present if she wanted it. Time to do his best for the lovely lady!

(Sentinel, Specs, Azure, Lordling)

Winter, Sentinel was bothered by it. It had interfered with his plans, or rather, they hadn't yet found the treasures they were looking for. Now with the snow, it meant that they would have to wait, especially since it meant more eyes to find them going about their business. High up, in the Weyr of their human, Lorn's fair were enjoying a more typical day for themselves. The three fighter girls were playing a game, lead by Bubbly, at least until they decided to snuggle up to their Queen. Lorn was likely snoozing, or watching over E'ra. Spectacles chattered with Laeth, with Azure not far away, and Lordling was enjoying one of his rare chances to get the 'boss' perch on one of Kozameth's knobs.

Silently, Sentinel watched over them all, his Queen's fair. Then the sound of the trill found him. Perking up, the Iron slipped from his hiding spot among the many crevices of the rock face, dislodging some of the snow that had built up around him as additional cover. Eyes whirling red, he looked down and decided it had been far too long since he'd chased. He, apparently, wouldn't be alone in this.

Until now, the other males of Lorn's fair had been too young to chase, and had heeded no calls, but they heard it too, and felt their King's attention stirring. Yes, they too would try their hands at flying. Besides, they would not leave their fairmate to do this all alone. So from the Weyr of Kozameth descended four, lead by Iron mostly pale as the snow, and silent, to his right Purple Spectacles, crafty, with his sharp eyes checking every angle, and clever wings testing every draft. To the Iron's left was Blue Azure, calm, patient but determined, and flanking them at the center little Lordling, the hissing and demanding black. The diamond flight pattern was taken as they swooped down into Hope's trail, following after her with precision, to climb with her. As the climb was taken, the four fanned out, assuming a wide V behind her, with the two ranking males sharing the front.

Berry received the rude snapping of Lordling's jaw, and a hiss, no contact made, but a menacing thread made clear. Who was this invader? Did he not know the greatness of their fair? Their numbers grew, and their strength was unmatched. It was their destiny to rule over all of the Weyr, did this purple really think he stood a chance. Sentinel wasn't of the same opinion, and snapped his own jaw, calling the black to order. There would be no fighting, no bloodshed if the Iron had anything to say about it.

Brown Sal appeared soon after the call came, his head turning toward the cyan female and his eyes abruptly whirling purple. He was off the roof he'd been sunning on in a heartbeat, going between and winking into open air just to the right of the leading two males. He caught up with them quickly, offering a cry to announce his presence to the beautiful firelizard.

Purposefully, he swerved closer to Sentinel, trying to get the Iron to falter, perhaps to fall back, to create an opening for Sal to fill. He never touched the other male, had no intention to foul him up, he just wanted to test him- and see if the Iron could be so easily fooled, or distracted. If it led to a fight, so be it, but Sal's main focus was still on winning- in any way possible. And Sentinel was just an opponent to beat.

Two young Burgundies heard Hope's call, and rose to her challenge. Twins Cagney and Capone flew side by side in unison, leaving Theirs behind in the safe (or else!) claws of their fairmates. They quickly fell in with the other males, taking note of where they were and their colors, but otherwise pretended to ignore them. They were here to mate, not make war with anyone.

Though woe to any male that went after them, though; they'd soon learn to their regret that the Burgundy brothers weren't ones to mess with. They watched out for each other, and wouldn't back down from a fight if one came up. That was just how they were.

Haverno was tired of not being able to really chase any female firelizard for a good while now with a lack of opportunity to prove his worth to the females of Dalibor by catching one or at the very least stretching his wings for something a little more exciting than running errands for Carissa. The large dark Bronze, therefore, practically jumped at the chance regardless of the weather to chase after Cyan Hope, along with Blue Favbar carrying a shell from his pile, and the relative newcomer Brown Torrens took off out of the Greenrider’s weyr into the winter skies of Pern. The three males that were a regular sight within the flights of female firelizards around the Weyr and were more than happy to see who would be the winner of the flight, which would hopefully be one of them of course.

Unfortunately they weren’t the first ones to join in the flight, or most likely the last ones with a Purple, a Brown, and two Burgundies that wasn’t really known to them, and four firelizards that they had some acquaintance with. Carissa’s firelizards didn’t really interact with her younger brother’s firelizards, but they weren’t unknown to them especially since Carissa’s Black and C’sen’s Iron were clutchmates.

Her first suitor didn't take long to arrive. Not only was the purple a familiar sight, but he was one of the few firelizards she sure could be trusted. That was because she was pretty sure that his human could be trusted. The girl with the gray dragon was one of the few friends her rider had in the Weyr. She was someone whose intentions seemed pure. Of course, it also didn't hurt that he had brought offerings of food. Hope trilled happily at Berry and doubled back in her flight path. She playfully ran the tip of her wing across his flank before snatching the bit of meat. Firelizards couldn't use words, but Berry would receive a distinct feeling of thank you!

Hope happily gobbled the meat down as she twisted around and darted forward once again. Oh yes, now she could definitely lead a flight worth remembering! No sooner had she made this observation than a veritable fair of firelizards joined the flight. She appreciated their presence, but since they had not done anything to draw her attention like the purple had, she did not pay them any individual attention. At least, she didn't until she heard a hiss. Oh no. Not in her flight. Hope flew sharply upward and twisted in a loop. The cyan hissed in warning and aimed a sharp mental reprimand at Lordling. There would be none of that! If he was going to hiss and threaten her other suitors, he was not welcome to chase.

With her warning in place, Hope shot off again. Higher and higher, faster and faster. If they wanted to have a shot at her, they would have to prove they could keep up with her. That said, quickness wasn't all that she wanted. She had many chasers, but only two of them had significantly signaled themselves out in some way. Berry as thoughtful and Lordling as toeing the line. If she had looked behind her in time to see what he was doing, Sal likely would have ended up in the same category as Lordling. As it was, he was one of many who needed to find a way to stand out in the crowd. That would need to change. The cyan took a sharp turn and reached her mind out to her suitors. Was that all they could do? She needed more to work with! If they wanted her to choose them, they'd have to do something to make themselves stand out. Spread your wings and prove yourselves.

(Sentinel-iron, Spectacles-Purple, Azure - Blue, Lordling-Black)

Lordling snapped his jaw at the cyan, not in threat, but in irritation. He flashed Hope an image of his Iron King, snorting, as he'd already been disciplined. He didn't need more input, not from some female, who clearly didn't understand what it meant to be a male and chasing, and besides, he always hissed. Grumpily the black followed along just the same, being stubborn, because he was flying here, thank you very much.

Azure, quick to spot upset, cooed, and brushed his mind against Hopes, sending apologies on behalf of his fairmate, while clicking at the more unruly black to sooth him. It was the blue that first saw the intrusion of Sal, coming closer to their formation. He gave a warning meep to the fore fliers of the formation.

Sentinel eyes whriled faster, his head tossing in silent communication that had the fighters at the back tightening their position, while Spectacles slipped further away. The Iron himself didn't shy from the approaching intruder, to the contrary, he dipped a wing to fly towards Sal, meeting the encroachment with encroachment. Sentinel was larger, a King, if one would move, it would not be him, as he continued to lead his fair in a now inverted V formation.

Spectacles was the next to speak, a series of clicks issued, until a snort was issued from Sentinel. Permission was granted, and the formation broke, though Sentinel kept his place by Sal, not about to give an inch. Specs, on the other hand, dropped down to surge forward, flying beneath Hope, briefly flipping over, not to try to catch her but to show off his daring, unusual for the intellectual flitter. If he received no scolding, he'd dare a nose bop, before he had to complete the maneuver (or fall out of the skies ), rolling back over to widen his wings, fanning them out to drop back behind her. He wasn't the only show off.

Azure had pulled up at the same time, beside her, trilling softly, before pulling similar roll Though he looped over her. It was a more costly move for the fighter, who didn't have the endurance of his fairmate. When he arrived on her opposite side, he didn't need to fan wings to drop back, his wingbeats slowing. A single click was issued from Sentinel, who spread his wings to soar, tipping only long enough to overtake the blue, so that he could level out and provide a wake for the fighter to fall into his wake. The King might be in competition with his fair mates, but they were still his charges; the Iron, easing the flight pat of the blue so that Azure could keep pace in the sky.

It didn’t look like the Cyan would stand bad behaviour from any of the firelizards presently chasing her considering her reaction to Lordling’s threatening of some of the other suitors. Haverno didn’t really put much weight on an uppity Black’s opinion, even if said Black was Carissa’s brother’s flit, though Torrens weren’t as sure as his Bronze fellow but was encouraged by Hope’s reaction. Favbar meanwhile wasn’t paying any attention to Lordling if only for the fact that the Blue was more concerned about making sure that he didn’t lose his grip on the shell that he had chosen as a possible offering to win over the Cyan’s affections for this flight.

The Blue made a series of sounds something like ‘look at this’ darting forward mostly to show off of the shell in his claws though he was unwilling to loosen his grip even slightly though that was just one item that he had collected over the turns and if she desired something different he was more than willing to seek it out. Haverno decided to do a series of dives and spins to show off what he could do, and the lighter parts running down the ends of his wingsails quite proud of them. Torrens did a similar maneuver side by side his Bronze fair-mate sometimes with the space between them being incredibly small though he didn’t have much in the way of markings to show off or a metallic hide to be proud of.

Berry was delighted when Hope returned his greeting. What a beautiful female she was! And so graceful. The way she looped back and took his present without even missing a beat. He knew he couldn't be half that agile. It took most of his energy just to keep pace with her speed. Maybe he really aught to cut down on sweets, as Pumpkin kept nagging him about. But then again, they were too delicious to pass up. For Hope though, it might be worth it. He chirped playfully as she flew ahead again. She was most welcome for the present!

Then Berry heard a snap, and rolled away from Lordling with a startled chirp. Why so rude? Couldn't they all be friends and have a fun game together? Well, Hope and an iron male set him straight. No need for Berry to get involved too. Goodness, but it seemed like they all had friends to fly with. Was that fair? He only had Pumpkin, and she was probably laughing at him somewhere. Hope was definately better. Like a clear sky on a summer's day. He wanted to do more to show how much he fancied her, but he just didn't have the skill or endurance of the others. What to do?

He didn't have any more presents and he didn't think Hope would like him to leave to find one. Nothing out here but fire lizards and snow. Snow! It was wet, cold, white, and very, very pretty. With a playful chirp, Berry dove down to a little snow bank. He flew acrossed the top, collecting as much snow as he could in his four claws. Then he powered his wings to fly higher. It took quite a bit of effort to get his heavy body to rise that quickly, but it would be worth it he was sure. Breathing a little hard, he trilled to try and get Hope's attention. No doubt she was distracted by some of the other lovely males, but it was worth a try.

Once he thought she might be looking, Berry dropped his collection of snow. Folding his wings, he fell into the scattered snowflakes and did couple small rolls. The snowflakes danced in several directions, and some even stuck to his wings and body. He leveled out, looking rather silly covered with white speckles, but feeling delight just the same. That had been fun! He hoped Hope was having fun too!

Was that all they could do?

The question/request/demand from Hope gave the Burgundy brothers a pause, for a moment. While they were't the most experienced chasers about, they had worked out some strategies for impressing choosy females that seemed to work for them. A moment's thought passed between them, and they put a plan into action.

Cagney and Capone put on a complicated display of agility, swooping around and weaving in and out of the gathered suitors, one the mirror of the other with their moves. If the beautiful young Cyan wished a display of their flight prowess, she would get one.

When they were done with their display, the brothers returned to their places behind Hope, to await her choice.

She made a request of her suitors and they had complied. Well, most of them had complied. One of them saw fit to mouth off at her simply because someone had already scolded him for his rudeness. The iron may be his king, but this was her flight. That was not her fair. Did he expect her to bend and bow to Sentinel because he did? Even if they were of the same group, this was her flight. When she was rising, the female always took priority. Hope didn't care for rank at the present time and didn't appreciate the black attempting to shove one down her throat. He had received his warning. Through giving her flack, he had failed to listen. Lordling received a blunt mental order to leave before he was ignored entirely.

That black had been a bother, but the rest of her suitors were doing so well! Their various antics roused an appreciative croon from the cyan. Agility seemed to be the name of the game today. Many of them put on different displays, but three of them captured her attention above all others. Along with an impressed click, Favbar received a feeling of appreciation for his offering. It was a very pretty shell! He had done a good job finding it.

Of Sentinel's fair, the iron seemed to be a good leader and Azure was sweet. But it was the purple, Spectacles, who earned most of her attention. That flip was very neat! She imagined he would have to be brave and intelligent to pull that off, along with possessing the agility that everyone seemed to be showing off. She was all too happy to return that bop on the nose.

The third firelizard to earn her favor was the one she was most familiar with. However, Hope was not going to be judging her chasers based off of familiarity, but with what they did during her flight. Berry had already proven himself to be thoughtful. Now, by creating a dazzling display of snow instead of turning to agility to signal himself out, he had made himself unique. She slowed her pace for a moment to watch the flakes flutter to the ground. Flecks of green amusement pierced her red eyes when she looked back at the purple and saw that he had covered himself in snow during the maneuver. He looked like her now! If firelizards could laugh, that was what she would be doing. Instead, she sent him a feeling of warmth and amusement.

So many wonderful firelizards. She was grateful to everyone who had shown up and made her flight so much fun. Three of them had managed to stand out above the rest. It should be a hard choice, but at the end of the day, it wasn't. She had asked for them to stand out and only one of them had truly done that. When she shot off again, this time, it was with the invitation for Berry to follow and twine with her.

The oldest and largest of the trio from Carissa’s fair of firelizards chasing the Cyan was proud enough of his display even if the Hope didn’t give him the time of day to actually choose him for her mate for the flight or even consider him for it. Favbar was almost as certain though other females he had found more interested in the items that he had tried to win the favour of the female though it was rather hit and miss really now that he thought about it. The quiet Brown didn’t really have much in terms of being able to show off or in terms of expectations of what he would get out of this flight considering how inexperienced he was.

Of the three of them only Favbar got any attention, the Cyan impressed with his shell though the Blue wasn’t exactly ready to hand it over unless she’s willing to trade whether it was in exchange for winning the flight or outside of the flight. It wasn’t any of the trio flight though with the Cyan eventually choosing the first firelizard it looked like had shown up for the flight, a Purple named Berry from what Haverno remembered. With the flight over the trio turned back towards the Weyr, Blue Favbar trailing behind out of exhaustion by the lack of stamina compared to the King and sub-King.
