News
Winter, 18th Turn, 11th Pass

Upcoming Flights/Runs:
Red Ingoth

Upcoming Hatchings:

Winter is in full swing as the Northwest reaches the middle stages of the cold month, and Dalibor, taking full advantage of a crackdust filled break in Threadfall, is back at it again. Delving into the Southern ice and snow, they have paired with Grove Weyr to fully explore the lands they only slightly uncovered the previous turn during the Jungle Expedition. This, however, will not be a warm and relaxing waltz through the woods; although was it ever that to begin with?

“There now, that looks a sight better’n the last time I saw it,” W’ryn cooed encouragingly to their treetail, Peapod, who was at that moment curled deep within the confines of what might, with great generosity, have been called a ‘nest’. A conglomeration of twisted branches, straw, canine fur, and clearly pilfered weyr-trappings, it had occupied an ever-increasing corner of the Bluerider’s living quarters since before the Expedition. A concerned note sent via firelizard had temporarily pulled the Bluerider back from the front lines of Grove Weyr’s newest experiment, though what awaited them was cause for joy, not concern. W’ryn tilted a head curiously as they studied the structure, wondering yet again how the treetails managed to survive in their native jungle habitat. It looked like something that would fall apart at the first sign of a breeze. Surely it wasn’t watertight. But perhaps the mass of tree matter would prove daunting to the probing nose of a snake.

The pointed head of their curious Blue filled one wall of the room, his shoulders jammed uncomfortably in the stone wall of his side of the weyr so that he could get close enough to see. To his Rider’s surprise, Earth had taken something of a liking to the treetail, despite all his earliest grumblings about her. But of all the pets, she was easily the least judgmental—she did not appear to laugh at him, or to weigh his decisions against their own personal scales, but only wished to climb and eat and befriend all creatures, even those most likely to eat her. He could not help but feel a little sorry for a creature that was not even clever enough to distinguish friend from foe.

She had also bitten the snake that had nearly taken W’ryn’s life out from under him, and he could never find fault with that.

Is she unwell? he thrummed loudly, tilting his head to one side to gaze at the nest with a slowly churning eye. Usually she would not be hiding so. Perhaps she had caught the plague, as W’ryn had.

“No, nothin’ like that. I think she’s had ‘er babies. Her eggs hatched,” W’ryn added, not certain the Earth understood the mechanics of such things outside of his own species. He had certainly heard other dragons talk of their Rider’s ‘eggs.’

Ohh. Earth fell silent, clearly contemplating the news. It was less excitement than the usual sort of egg hatching. Particularly because he could not see anything of much interest other than some vague patches of fur, which might have been Peapod’s or might have belonged to any number of babies. It was difficult to say in the dim light, even when he tried looking through W’ryn’s eyes.

“Dunno how many, she en’t interested in showin’ ‘em off yet. Right protective of ‘em. Guess we’ll be findin’ out soon though.” W’ryn backed away from the nest as quietly as he could manage, gingerly laying a small pile of nuts near the entrance. No doubt she could use all the extra food she could manage.

“We’ll leave ‘er in peace a few days more, don’t think she’ll mind our bein’ gone one bit. We’ll count ‘em up when she’s ready to show ‘em. Don’t get too comfortable, we’re due back about as soon’s we’re ready,” W’ryn reminded his dragon, but softly, a little apologetic. Both of them would rather have stayed, truth be told. But what if something happened to Aglaktii and Kangath while they were away, pretending as if they didn’t have a duty to the Weyrs? And even worse, what if she found something, and of course she wouldn’t be sharing it with a couple of layabouts who stayed home instead of braving the ice.

“Just a few more days, y’won’t even notice the time goin’ by,” W’ryn soothed one more time, ducking out of the familiar warmth and smells of their home, climbing aboard Earth only to depart for distant lands once more.
