Winter, 18th Turn, 11th Pass

Upcoming Flights/Runs:
Red Ingoth

Upcoming Hatchings:

Winter is in full swing as the Northwest reaches the middle stages of the cold month, and Dalibor, taking full advantage of a crackdust filled break in Threadfall, is back at it again. Delving into the Southern ice and snow, they have paired with Grove Weyr to fully explore the lands they only slightly uncovered the previous turn during the Jungle Expedition. This, however, will not be a warm and relaxing waltz through the woods; although was it ever that to begin with?

Square: 95
Who: NPCs Johani and Argi Whr/Whr
Day:14

They had been going and going and going. And as they mapped their area they came across something rather pretty. It was shiny! So very shiny. Johani ran up to it and stared at the pretty rock, Johanisk come and trying to dig at it.

"We should get these mapped, you know, for the crafters to come and see them." Argi stated, watching as the green of his friend's tried to dig his own piece of the stone out. "Stop that, you're not a miner, don't you do that!" He argued with the pair.

Johanisk huffed. "But it's pretty, why leave it to the crafters, I want my own."

Argi frowned again. "Because you're dumb and will ruin it."

"Point taken." Johani said.

"Let's just map where we find them." The brown handler suggested.

"Still sad I haven't seen any of those really neat beasts running around."
Johani pouted.

"And I'm more than happy to not have seen them even once so far." Argi replied.

And then the next day came. Johani as always, rearing and ready to go. He was so excited to get going that he nearly dragged Argi off before he could receive the hide with their locations on it.

So on wards they trekked, into the unknown. Argi all the while worrying that nothing had happened, because the longer they were here, the closer they got to getting killed or maimed.

Derg/Derg NPC C'laen of Brown Aakavath and NPC Z'ough of Blue Ceinlyth
Square 94

They had gotten lucky yesterday - they had found, among the seemingly endless plain of ice, a seam of fine gemstones. The color almost hurt C'laen, reminding him of his lost weyrmate, but he had long since accepted the loss and so it was with more fondness than sadness that he thought of the peridot hide of the long lost Kiralyth.

Z'ough, for his part, was torn between boredom and contentment. It was always good to be flying with Ceinlyth, something he had never tired of doing, but the endless sheets of ice marred only by that faint sparkle of green hadn't been the most exciting day. Their current flight felt almost leisurely, which caused the Bluerider a little bit of worry - flying over the inland sea seemed easy at first, but Ceinlyth bore the stitches that proved otherwise. Ice wasn't prone to strange currents, but who knew what lay beneath them.

G’len/N’baatar; dragon/dragon; square 67

The knowledge that this was the last day of the expedition made G’len more than a little sad, mixed with...relief, perhaps? It meant that, with the exception of transporting wherhandlers back home, his time here was done. While it had been fun seeing new lands, recording his finds, and reacquainting himself with a certain rider who’d transferred out to Grove for personal reasons, the Bronzerider also wanted to go back to loved ones back home, too.

So for the last time this trip, G’len took off for one last exploring trip of the Southern Wastes. If nothing else he got some good information on some of the critters out here, plus enough pretty gemstones to make some jewelry to give to his lady friends to wear. That would be a reason for coming out here, if others needed a reason to explore than ‘why not?’.

N’baatar was also somewhat sad on his last day here. He wanted to see more of both kinds of the strange horned beasts that lived out here. Those were interesting to the Beastcrafter; even these new icemaulers had some interest to him. Even if he really didn’t want to get too up close and personal to one. He wasn’t that stupid to want one for a breeding project, after all. Wild animals were wild for a reason, alright?

STAFF RESPONSE

DAWN OF THE FOURTEENTH DAY

AFTERSHOCK / L'IGI & PAULINE / DRG&DRG
You're at the bottom of the world. It's been two sevendays and nearly every square is complete, and at this stage, every square remaining can be chosen. It's been a journey of one sort, and quite a bit less deadly than the Jungle of the previous turn, so overall there cannot be much complaining, can there? You've chosen, for your assignment, the furthest Southeast corner of the exploration area. It's the termination of the known world for you and the rest of the adventurers, even if you can see into an open world of white to the South.

You spend the morning mapping, ice and rocks, not very hard, but are drawn down to the ice when something small catches your eye. You encourage the dragons to land carefully, listening to the creak of the ice beneath you, but it is thick here. Thick and undamaged yet by mountains. Perhaps you have even found the starting sheet of ice from which all the others is born. The small creature you saw scatters for a moment, holding close to the ground and then squeaking at you in its own language. It's ears waver back and forth and the squeak screaming continues as it bares sharp teeth and chitters.

It is really, very, quite noisy. You might cluck at it, attempting to lure it in with a bit of food, and it'll scream at you. It doesn't seem to mean it in a bad way, but you probably can't help wondering if it is in some kind of agonizing pain. You'll come to learn that this is simply how these creatures vocalize. They always sound like they are in constant pain, and unhappy, even when they are happy. They really are...quite noisy. Yet, eventually it does come, sliding its shoulder against the snow and ice, exposing its belly and screaming at you with its ears pinned.

You must suppose that it wants to be with you, whatever it is.

user posted image
You see a solitary creature traversing the ice below you. It watches with intense curiosity and no fear as you descend. Before you have half a chance to try and coax it to you, it is there, chittering its odd caninesque language and encouraging you to cavort with it on the ice

TOBES / W'RYN & AGLAKTII / DRG&DRG
Two sevendays over the ice, yet there have only been a few hairy moments, and one death to speak of. Not caused by the beasts of the land, but the weather. So much better than the devastation of the previous turn. You're chasing some of rukbat's rays over the fork in the Northern river when you catch sight of a bone-crowned beast, then you've got something else to chase. It's easy to run the beast down here, or it seems like it. It never manages to disappear, try as it might to find a nook to burrow into, and eventually it drops from exhaustion. By the time you reach it, it's fully dead. Its heart gave out.

user posted image
The enormous beast tosses his head up at you, enraged by your very presence, but quickly decides he cannot fight you without wings and takes off with a gamely prance in the other direction, but you give chase and run it down until exhaustion. This will be a feast indeed

HARBINGER / C'LAEN & Z'OUGH / DRG&DRG
Two sevendays of searching over the ice has brought you here, to the junction of the Northern ice "rivers". You can see in every direction that is in the valley, but your view is blocked by the mountains that diverge the ice, make it creak and grown as it crushes its way down to water. This is one of the final assignments for Dragonriders, in fact, by the time you return to Base there won't be any slots left for the flying cousins to whers. Only for the whers themselves.

There doesn't seem to be much here for you, at first. Until you see movement down below. It blends in with the snow and ice as if it was made to live here, and it takes you some time to find a safe place to land, all while keeping the movement in view. A wher could track this creature better, but as luck would have it, you don't need to worry about hunting.

It's a curious beast. Curious and loud. Oh it's so loud. It's squeaking, and chittering, and screaming as it runs over to you. It seems to pay you next to no mind at first, treating you like a very large boulder, as it begins to savagely tear into your pockets, your packs, anything that holds anything that is near it. Destructive, it screams if you try to reach for it, cowering with its belly exposed and ears pinned, tail thumping against the ice.

Then it's off like a shot, scrambling around in a hunched posture, exploring, chattering, screaming, yipping, and nipping. Is it happy? Is it scared? It sounds like it's being murdered, but it looks unharmed. It's white as the snow around it save for its amber eyes and black nose, so no signs of blood. When you stand to leave it follows, and it's easy to see that you've found yourself a companion...a very noisy, very destructive, companion.

TIGERSILK / G'LEN & N'BAATAR / DRG&DRG
Two sevendays on the ice and you snag the last remaining Dragonrider assignment. It's over for day missions, aside from carrying Crafters to take gem and ore from rock, or filter the black sludge from the ground as found in the other locations. Some would say the true work begins now, that the exploring Dragonriders will simply be used as ferries from this point on. You, however, are the last. You chose the final quadrant, and you're out here now mapping it. Everything seems normal, if a bit boring and plain, like there isn't anything much surviving out here.

That is until you notice the dark blotch beneath the ice. You find a safe place to land, and poke around a bit at it, but you don't need to unleash it fully, you know what lies beneath. So it's time to pack it in and get the Crafters, wise people who have studied their work, and will get to the bottom of this mysterious black sludge that keeps being discovered in the colder climates of Pern.

Those who were there, all those turns ago in the North, will know what this is. You? You might be horrified when the black sludge starts to tarnish the white snow

DUSK OF THE FOURTEENTH DAY

JENN / EDELAN & MATRIC / WHR&WHR
Two sevendays have passed, the twin moons are nearing half full, though they still have some time left to go. The world is brighter than it was a couple of days ago, and you're back on the mountains. The Dragonrider's have covered their areas to completion, having more willing participants in the early days, but now...it's up to the Wherhandlers to finish out the Expedition. As you are now, traveling up and down the mountain mapping your area. You're mapping more than that. Deposits of ore litter the stones of this square of the world, and you're making sure to mark each one. You're going to get something out of this, after all.

user posted image
So there were treasures beneath the ice

RHIABLACK / IJO & DAVENTON / WHR&WHR
The twin moons are nearly halved, caught somewhere between a quarter of light and the rest darkness. The world is far more illuminated than it was a couple of days ago, on this, the two sevenday milestone of the Expedition. One death, caused by inclement weather, in all this time is nothing to sniff at. A far safer Expedition than possibly any that have come before it. For everyone involved. There are no more Dragonrider assignments, so it falls to the Wherhandler's shoulders now. To see it through. There is nothing much of interest where you have come to draw your map. But near the end of your time out on the mountains, you scare up a Green firelizard that must've decided this was as good a place as any to lay her singular egg. Silly creature.

user posted image
This firelizard egg seems different from all the others in the pile
*RFE Prize: Add +5 entries to a colour of your choice*

AERONA / JOHANI & ARGI /WHR&WHR
You are the last of the Wherhandlers to choose an assignment, at least for now. You already know that there are no further Dragonrider assignments, and that the remainder of the Expedition falls to the Handlers to complete. And the Riders to carry and ferry Crafters back and forth to the riches that have been discovered. Or mysteries. The twin moons are slowly turning to bright halves again, and the world is far brighter than it was, but for you, it might be just a little bit more dangerous. You map your quadrant as expected of you, but what you couldn't have forseen was the bone-crowned beast that crested a rocky ledge and bellowed at you angrily.

As luck would have it, he and his entire species have had just about enough of you and your species infringing on their area. He turns and bolts as soon as he catches a look at you, and disappears out of your quadrant, perhaps out of the entire area. You'll go back empty-handed, but uninjured.

The enormous beast charges you, larger than any Gold wher you've met, you are no match on the ground.

NPC Harrin and Brown Harrisk / NPC Lyrnn and Blue Lyrsk
Wher / Wher
Square: 110

Exploring was risky business, there was no denying it. Certainly a number of precious resources had been found and some rather interesting wildlife, but several pairs had been taken out of commission by this harsh land. Avalanches, high winds, and dangerous predators were just some of the dangers waiting out there. But that didn't stop Lyrnn and Harrin from heading out anyway. They were veteran wherhandlers and pretty confident they could handle whatever was thrown their way. Seeing one of the mountains still had a bit left to explore, they opted to check it out and see what could be seen.

Ariancha and Fricheno had a relatively easy time, especially considering all of the hardship others that had joined this expedition had faced and for some were currently facing. At least for them it was a good night for stargazing, which the Brownhandler didn’t mind doing from time to time though not before making sure that the actual task at hand was done. They saw an avalanche go off in the distance, but what was happening and if there were handlers involved wasn’t clear from their distance and even if they could tell they were too far away to make much of a difference. The pair figured they would be informed as to what happened when they returned to camp if it was important anyway so there wasn’t any point in speculation.
---
NPC Ariancha of Brown Arisk / NPC Fricheno of Black Frichsk Square: 36

With every pair of Dragonriders and wherhandlers going out that day the time for the expedition to come to a close was drawing closer, and though she didn’t know whether or not there was enough time Airancha was willing to try going out again. So was Arisk, though once again it didn’t look like the former Trader from Dalibor, Tarele, would be joining her or one of the other pairs of wherhandlers. Fricheno and his Black wher were willing to go out once again and that was enough for her.

DUSK OF THE FOURTEENTH DAY

ROWANA / HARRIN & LYRNN / WHR&WHR
Two sevendays have passed since you've come to the Southern Ice Floes, and there is probably only one day of moves left. One day of assignments. The Dragonriders are done, now the Handlers must bear the brunt of the work to finish out the Expedition. At least it hasn't been dangerous. The twin moons are filling with light again, nearing the halfway mark, caught somewhere between there and the quarter. The world is not as dark as it was, but that won't help you find anything of value here today. It is an inhospitable world, barren and arid, but it must be mapped, even if there is no value lost in the rocks.

MOPSY / ARIANCHA & FRICHENO / WHR&WHR
This may be one of your last assignments for the Expedition, depending on how quickly you move when evening comes tomorrow. There might even be a line of waiting applicants hoping to snag one of the remaining squares. The twin moons are filling with light again, and they illuminate the world as they wax, making it easier to see and map your area. You spend a large portion of the night at it, uncovering every rock, charting every nook, but you won't go home empty handed today.

user posted image
You are startled by the call of a horned beast that bolts from behind a grouping of tall trees. It prances gallantly through the snow, watching you warily at first, but seems to be slowly soothed by your presence. Eventually the beast approaches you with curiosity, as if surprised to see you so far south and in the snow.

A doe is dead, her leg broken where it became wedged in a jumble of stones, and her calf remains. It mewls at you with a plaintive fearfulness. At least you weren't an Icemauler, though what does it know of that. It is new to the world, new to you. You'll take it back with you, even if you don't have designs on keeping it yourself, there are always willing adopters on the horizon. But, who could say no to such a cute little face.

PRIZE: Domesticated Caribou Token MALE
Can be paired with an Apply Mutation Token, is otherwise a normal Caribou.
Is a calf until applied to a character, only then will aging begin.

Square 37
Johani and Argi Whr whr

Ohhh yes, they had seen one! It had seen them too, and Johan I wanted nothing more than to chase the thing down But was Hyoooge, and not something that any Wher could take down. He spent that whole night recalling everyone who would listen about how he had scared of the maasive beast.

To which Argi slapped him upside the head for lying about such a thing. They were just lucky they had not gotten hurt or killed. He had been amazed by the sheets size of it. He was also more than glad it had left them be.

The next day left Argi super leery of stumbling across the beast again.

Johani was so excited, he sang and yelled and was thwaped several times.

NPC Harrin and Brown Harrisk / NPC Lyrnn and Blue Lyrsk
Wher / Wher
Square: 79

Well, last evening was a bust. The night was peaceful and quiet at least, but sadly devoid of any useful discoveries. Well, there was still time for one more trip. Lyrnn poured over the map. Not a whole lot of choice left and the dragon riders were all done now. He eventually decided on an area lower down then their last venture and Harrin agreed. Hopefully they'd find more than just rocks and ice this time. At the very least, they could contribute to finishing the map. Couldn't just leave it unfinished, could they?

Edelan & Matric
Wher/Wher
Day 15
#140

Day after day after day. They bled together and Edelan placated herself with the icerunners and Edesk. She still waited for the firelizard egg to hatch, knowing that it would be her luck that it would either hatch while she was gone or be a total dud. Edesk assured her that wasn't the case, there was little firelizard inside and that it would be a while before it cracked shell. The cyan insisted it wouldn't hatch before they got back to the weyr and Edelan could only believe her. The day before they had found some more of those stones beneath the ice, she wondered what the crafters would make of them and rested up.

This day she would go as quickly as she could, Matric agreeing with her. Both handlers wanted to be finished, both whers were beginning to dislike the place and the cold was getting to them. They all just wanted to go home. The monotonousness of the entire thing was wearing on them. The lack of colors and the social hub that was the weyr was sorely missed. But what could they do when commanded to do it? They could only do it.

Matric suggested a likely spot to continue their trek to map and search, Edelan was content to follow her lead.

Setarii of black Setask and Jetaro of green Jetarsk (NPC)

More and more handlers kept coming back wounded, which was apparently a siren call for Setarii. The burly woman and her black hit the ground running. Or, rather, walking cautiously. But running in spirit! With Jetaro keeping his distance behind, and being more observant than Setarii was, she forged a path, making notes of landmarks and muttering about snow while pulling her scarf tighter around her neck and making sure her head was carefully tucked into her hood. Just in case a good gust of wind came their way.

Who: Ijo and Brown Isk / Daventon of Green Davesk
Where: 38

Ijo had found a firelizard egg. It was...well, it was something, something not rocks or death, so he had to be pleased about that, but curiosity weighed on him as to whether or not this egg might be different than others from the warmer climates. Some part of him wanted to keep it, see what came out of it. Perhaps he would. Perhaps he'd give it to Daventon, but who knew.

All he did know is that they had almost scoured the entire space requested of them by the Holds and Weyr, and it would soon be time to return home to Dalibor, to mete out the riches accrued by those who had come, and care for those who'd been injured on the journey. He was looking forward to sleeping in his own bed, curling up by the hearth with Isk and perhaps coming up with new lessons for whatever batch of Wherlings might crop up when it was his turn on the cycle once more.

There was never a lack of anything to do, that he could find security in, and he and Daventon had shared some klah back at basecamp, regailing one another of tales of past trials and tribulations. It had, ultimately, been the highlight of his trip short of coming across the two different kinds of ore and their subsequent gemstones therein; well, certainly ones he'd be looking for once he got the small bit he'd kept for himself back to Dalibor.

And then, he'd have to find some way to make it up to the pair of brothers who had been injured with him.

Ijo set out with Daventon close by, Davesk scampering after Isk's lumbering form as the Brown inspected the landscape to find something, anything, of interest.

Burl/Lintara; wher/wher; square 126

This was likely the last day for adventuring for the majority of the wher pairs for the foreseeable future. The riders had finished their explorations the day before; the handlers were expected to finish today.

Burl had few regrets this adventure. Unless something horrible happened to him tonight, he proved to himself that he was (almost) entirely recovered from his encounter with the giant snake last turn. Which made Busk happy, at least.

Lintara was wanting to find some of the minerals still hidden inside the mountains here, for her own examinations. If nothing else, she figured, buying or bargaining some of the gemstones off of those who found them first could be done.

Lintask, of course, thought she could flirt them off a handsome handler or rider. After all, everyone liked giving pretty things to pretty females, right? And who was prettier at the basecamp than her? Easy-peasy.

DUSK OF THE FIFTEENTH DAY

AERONA / JOHANI & ARGI / WHR&WHR
Is it the last evening of the Expedition? There's no way to know. By the time you return to Base all of the assignments will be chosen, or they won't. It's been a fairly successful time out here over the cold ice, and you still have something left to discover all your own. After mapping your quadrant, you wrap back around to a cavern you uncovered earlier in the evening. It proves to be less of a cavern, and more of a divot in the mountain, as if some great arm of ice stretched up and sliced through it. Who can say. The only truth you can see about it, is that it is full of stars.

user posted image
An odd algae coloured green gemstone stuck hard in a rocky outcropping. It must be worth something.

ROWANA / HARRIN & LYRNN / WHR&WHR
This could be it. This might be the final night. And if it isn't, the evening scramble for the last assignments will be brutal. So you'll probably want to enjoy this. Mapping your area, hoping this final evening doesn't end in disaster. It won't, for you at least. You find little in your area...except all of the ore scattered about buried in rocks waiting to be plucked out by the Crafters. At least they have to come back, all cold and ice-bitten, while you get to go warm up, and return home.

user posted image
So there were treasures beneath the ice

JENN / EDELAN & MATRIC / WHR&WHR
This might well be the final night of the expedition. The twin moons shine in halves, and will probably not have a chance to cycle again. You've chosen your assigned area and are delivered to it. It's washed with snow and ice, an avalanche tore down the slope recently, exposing only more snow beneath it. These mountains are old, and frozen, but you won't find anything here, aside from the disturbed stones and boulders that the avalanche moved. At least you weren't here for that event, perhaps just a candlemark sooner and you might've been swept up in its grasps.

user posted image
A distant crack, a deep rumble, then suddenly a wall of white roaring down upon you

CAPTAIN / SETARII & JETARO / WHR&WHR
The final evening. The twin moons are halved in light, and you can sense completion coming. There might still be assignments left, but they'll be fought over, so it might be best to accept that this is the end. Your end. Not actually, of course. In fact, nothing out of the ordinary will happen to you tonight. No great storm, no falling rocks, no feral felines. Unfortunately, that means absolutely nothing. No resources, nothing to take back with you, save perhaps a few pebbles if you're the sentimental sort.

RHIABLACK / IJO & DAVENTON / WHR&WHR
Is this it? Is this the end of the Southern Expedition? You won't know until you return to Base for the morning. If all the assignments have been taken. All you can do is settle in and map your area and hope that you find something worth taking back. The twin moons are halved above you, forming one solid moon, the second in darkness, it's good enough for lighting you might suppose. Unfortunately, the light does not expose anything of value in this barren wasteland of cold and scant life. It is as inhospitable as always.

TIGERSILK / BURL & LINTARA / WHR&WHR
You head out on the fifteenth evening, possibly your last of the expedition if the assignment table is rushed the evening next. So you might want to take your time, going over everything, mapping the territory as it requires to be fully realized. So that Crafters, settlers, explorers after you won't become lost or confused in this arid and inhospitable environment. There isn't much to see, at first. You go back and forth long into the night, and are probably starting to wonder if you'll go home with nothing at all.

That's when you stumble upon the body. Over it, really. It's long since frozen to the rocks that it fell against. There's hardly anything you can do, not even wrench it free and take it back for food, because it probably perished in the storm those days ago. You're about to write the entire thing off, when the bleating starts. The little calf wanders out from beneath a rocky overhang, perhaps deciding that death is better than freezing as its mother did. How it survived? Who can say.

It needs to be taken away now, and tended.

Prize: Domesticated Icerunner Token FEMALE
May have an Apply Mutation Token assigned to it, otherwise must be a normal caribou.
Is a calf until applied to a character, then begins aging.

Team: NPC Miki of Black Mikisk/NPC Myni of Black Mynisk
Square 66

.

The final day of the expedition was here! Siblings Miki and Myni vied for one of the last squares on the map and walked away with a shot at discovering something strange or new. So many interesting things came of this exploration. Odd runner like beasts with antlers. Funny looking toggins. Baby icemaulers. And fluffy canine like creatures. The black handlers were not exactly a brave pair, but it would be ever so neat to bring something back to camp. That way they could say they contributed. Okay, well, maybe they'd only succeed in mapping, but that was something! Mikisk and Mynisk plucked across the icy ground with shared looks of displeasure. Snow was awful. Ice was appalling. Why couldn't they just stay in their nice warm wherholes away from all this death and possibly getting eaten nonsense. That's be fun. Waaaaaay more fun than traipsing around the tundra.

What Ariancha and Fricheno found on the foray wasn’t something that they were expecting to see, though there were reports and evidence from previous the pair of wherhandlers coming across them they didn’t think that they would. Not that they were sorry for coming but they were also sad for the young and friendly bull calf seeing as he had lost his mother after she broke her leg wedged in stones. There were people who had expressed interest in taking on one of these beasts, though what they would do with him especially once he was grown neither the Brownhandler nor the Blackhandler had a guarantee.
---
NPC Ariancha of Brown Arisk / NPC Fricheno of Black Frichsk Square: 52

There was barely anything left to explore for the expedition, what was left could be counted on a single hand, though whether or not there was good reason to avoid the last three squares was a different matter entirely. Aside from dropping off and retrieving wherhandlers there wasn’t much for the Dragonriders left uninjured to do for the final days of the expedition. Ariancha, Fricheno, and their whers had plenty to do, whether it would be fighting off one of the more ferocious fauna of the glaciers and mountains, finding one of the more tame fauna to bring back, finding ores, or simply surveying the area was to be determined.

Edelan & Matric
Wher/Wher
Square #78

They narrowly missed that wall of white that tried to kill them. It had happened suddenly, their only warning an ominous rumble before Edesk had howled to Edelan to move, move, move! It was the whers that saved their lives. The cyan and blue ripping their handlers out the way of that death trap before they could be crush beneath the weight of so much snow. Not for the first time in her life, Edelan thanked Faranth that she had impressed Edesk some years ago.

They decided to go out one more time despite their brush with near death. It couldn't happen again could it? But they knew it could. So many maulings and deaths or near deaths had happened in the two weeks that they had all been out there. This was the first time they had to deal with something like this but they would persevere. They had not died and that was all that mattered.

They made the decision together to go out one last time and it was at that moment that Edelan realized that she would miss this other woman terribly. What would she do without her next to her? The cyanhandler needed to make many decisions this expedition.

STAFF RESPONSE

DUSK OF THE FIFTEENTH DAY

CATSITTA / MIKI & MYNI / WHR&WHR
By the time you return to Base after your exploration, there will only be one square left. By the time you arrive at assignments the following dusk, if you even go, it will be gone. Perhaps you can sense this as you head out for one last time into the great--yet relatively--known unknown. You spend the night mapping, and perhaps you stay out longer than necessary to take it all in one final time. You find nothing of value, and nothing of danger, just the twin moons, and the stars, and the ice and snow.

MOPSY / ARIANCHA & FRICHENO / WHR&WHR
You've taken one of the last positions. In fact, by the time you return to Base there will be only one assignment left, and if you bother to show up the following evening, you will have been beaten to choosing. If you can sense that this is your last evening, perhaps you take more time than is necessary to explore...to enjoy...or perhaps you want nothing more than to be out of this frozen wasteland. You aren't alone tonight. You have a partner, of course, but there is another creature here hidden within the rocks. It is a firelizard. Who promptly abandons her only egg when you draw near, leaving it for you to pluck free of the cooling nest and take with you.

This firelizard egg seems different from all the others in the pile

DUSK OF THE SIXTEENTH DAY

JENN / EDELAN & MATRIC / WHR&WHR
How you managed to be the first to assignments, is perhaps a mystery only you can answer. Perhaps you simply never slept, and sat the day away in the Bowl. Regardless, Betahandler Oreanda has the final numbered square of hide ready, and you are first come, and so first served when Rukbat falls beneath the horizon of the world. Once more into the abyss, and this time with the knowledge that, aside from your partner, you are entirely alone in the world. No dragons stay, no other Handlers are visible crossing distant mountain trails.

The world is silent. Snow falls gently from simple clouds, the stars sparkle, and the twins try to drown them out. Everything is still, perhaps nearly peaceful, but not for long. You hear a scream, and then the Icemauler wades into your midst slashing and gaping. By the time you've slaughtered the beast to defend yourselves, everyone in the party is wounded. If there was any exploring left to do, you would've had to suffer a wait for the wounds to mend, but as it is, all you need do is muster the energy to climb aboard a dragon, bleed all over it, and make your way to an Infirmary.

The only people who will be working here are Crafters and Grove Riders and Handlers.

Smaller than its Northern cousins, this Southern mauler of the snow seems far more timid and reclusive. That doesn't mean it isn't going to try to devour you. Life is hard on the ice.

L'igi of Green Jasmith - Reply to Find

L'igi communicated with Pauline via their dragons, noting any interesting landmarks on the barren snow and ice that might be used as landmarks, for others who might explore this way later on wherback, keeping an eye out for dangers. It was in fact Pauline's sharp eyes that first noticed the small movement on the snow that moved too strangely to be attributed to wind, and together the pair descended and found the strange, loud little ball of white fuzz.

"It's very cute, if a bit... noisey," L'igi said to Pauline, smiling as the little creature grabbed his flight glove playfully with its sharp teeth and tugged at it while rolling on its back, making an odd undulating bark that sounded somewhat like laughter. Rosalina had betweened in at the thoughts of her bonded, and was currently pouncing around in the snow like a little ice sculpture, making chirps and squeaks at the fuzzy creature as it made yelps and barks back at her, seemingly as confused but interested in the cyan flit as the flit was in it..., well, HIM, if these creatures were as closely related to canines and Icehowlers as they looked and what L'igi had seen between the little creature's legs as it rolled on its back was any indicator.

The small white creature did not seem to be leaving, and L'igi worried what would happen if they tried to leave it behind and it tried to follow them as they left on dragonback... would the creature hurt itself trying to keep up? He finally decided he couldn't risk it... he would figure out a way to strap it to Jasmith, and they would take it back to the Camp, at least, to see if any of the Beastcrafters would know what to do with it. "I supposed we should name you, for now, to make things less confusing for us... hmm..." As he was thinking, he went to put his goggles back down, having removed them after they landed and started dealing with the canine-like creature, and found they had gotten covered in a thin layer of frost in the short time they had been put up on his forehead. Wiping it off, a name suddenly came to him, and he said, "We'll call you Rimefrost," a name that seemed to please the small animal well enough, if its yipping and leaping about in the snow was any indicator. After some false starts and with the help of Pauline, they eventually got the squirmy creature secured on Jasmith's back, and the pair quickly completed their survey of the area and headed back to the Base Camp.
