Winter, 18th Turn, 11th Pass

Upcoming Flights/Runs:
Red Ingoth

Upcoming Hatchings:

Winter is in full swing as the Northwest reaches the middle stages of the cold month, and Dalibor, taking full advantage of a crackdust filled break in Threadfall, is back at it again. Delving into the Southern ice and snow, they have paired with Grove Weyr to fully explore the lands they only slightly uncovered the previous turn during the Jungle Expedition. This, however, will not be a warm and relaxing waltz through the woods; although was it ever that to begin with?

Name: Zassilissa
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Sexuality: Bisexual
Location: Dalibor Weyr
Rank: Candidate
Age-Out Date: AU:26

Personality:

Ambitious | Loyal | Quiet | Distrustful | Stubborn | Reckless

Lissa is a quiet girl. She doesn't speak unless she has something important to say. She keeps her walls high, not trusting other people. In her experience, other people only hurt you, and she would rather avoid that at all costs. So she keeps to herself, and she doesn't let anyone in, preferring quiet and solitude to everything else. Rune is the only one she trusts, the only one she listens to.

The child is quietly ambitious. She has big plans, she just isn't sure how to go about them on her own. She spends a lot of time on her own, dreaming and planning, but not a lot of time enacting her plans. Lissa had no real means of having her dreams come to fruition, but she spends time dreaming. A lot. Above all else, she wants to become more in this world than the orphan she used to be. She's filled with an inner fire, though, at times she is reckless and headstrong. She has a good heart, but she'll usually go about the wrong way to get something she wants, believing that she is right and in her own stubbornness.

She knows how to use a dagger. Through necessity, she's had to learn to protect herself, and she's quite adept at it. She's grown to be scrappy, quick on her feet. She tends to make snap judgements about people, and she holds grudges about people for a very long time. She's unwavering loyal though, if someone manages to get through her walls, which is a feat in and of itself.

Appearance: She's a small girl, overall. She only stands at 5'3''. Her legs are most of her body length however. Her hands and feet are small, but her fingers are long and thin. She has a short face, large doe like brown eyes and a small nose. Her skin is very pale, and speckled with darker freckles all over. Her hair is reddish brown and naturally wavy. She walks with confidence, but also carefully, as if someone might jump out at her at any moment. She dresses in layers, because she isn't used to not having to hide. She's very slowly coming out of her shell, however, and will, occasionally, dress down.

Family: Father: Ralthor (DECEASED)
Mother: Zaamine (DECEASED)

Pets: Cyan Firelizard Rune; Protective and loyal, Rune wants nothing more than see Lissa succeed. She is a quiet presence always near Lissa's heart, always what the girl needs her to be at any given time. She is small for a cyan, but very long and whippy.

History: Lissa doesn't remember her parents. Her mother died to the white wherry plague when she was but an infant. She never knew her father. He was a trader passing through Ruatha Hold where her mother lived. Zaamine was a poor but pretty baker girl. She made a living selling breads and bubbly pies. She didn't make enough to live comfortable, but it was enough to get by. Unfortunately, she was sickened by the plague while pregnant. She died after giving birth to her daughter. From there, the child was found and placed in the creche.

The girl grew up with big dreams, but no realistic way of getting there. She hated the creche as she'd always disliked children her own age, but she was forced to live there anyway. When she was ten, she was put to work in the kitchens and was receiving some schooling through the creche system. She always dreamed of being a candidate, but the closest she got to that was a little cyan firelizard that hatched out of an egg she bought one gather.

She loved the firelizard and named it Rune. When she refused to associate with the other children, the firelizard was her best friend. Unsatisfied with the scope of the learning, Lissa found an old man to teach her how to use a small dagger. In return, she had Rune hunt him small game that he used for meat and skins. She was not searched right away when she was of age to stand, instead she had to endure the hold and the creche a little bit longer. She knew that she was destined for more, but it was disheartening when other children were searched instead of her.

Finally, when she was fifteen, she was searched and found herself on her way to Dalibor.

Hey, Quinn!

Welcome to Dalibor!

While Major Holds are fairly bustling cities in the medieval sense, they aren't so large that she could go unnoticed as a thief for very long. This might not be a normal problem as with most fantasy where you have a theif archetype, however Pern is different. Life is much harder when every few days you have a biological organism raining down and destroying the land around you, where trade is mostly barter, and property is king of everything.

A theif would have to stay fairly mobile, and if caught would be sent to the mines to work as a slave until death, or branded and exiled (basically a death sentence). You should re-think her life as a thief in consideration of how difficult things are within Pern's canon.

You could have her start as a thief, then do her best to reform, or perhaps she is a beggar, or the cliche taken in by a Baker, or otherwise exploited for her labour in the Hold. She can be an urchin as you have her story unfolding, rough around the edges and wary, but the thieving itself wouldn't last long in the Hold.

Hey, @Quinn

I am sorry that this took so long!

The Wherry Plague killed more quickly than you have in the history. It also happened exactly 15 turns ago this season and turn (18). So her age would need to be adjusted up one turn. If you are okay aging her up 1 turn, then simply have her mother pass after her birth.

Crecheworkers would not keep children away from Dragonriders during Search. For one, it isn't allowed, a Weyr has full right to Search any Hold they protect from Threadfall (any Hold that tithes to them). And while a family may refuse that Search, you need to keep in mind that Dragonriders have it made, so few people would say no to the honor of being allowed to Stand as a Candidate. She would have had every opportunity to be Searched (when she was of age at 12 turns old).

Additionally, you cannot write generalizations about a place in her history. Many player characters have been from Ruatha, many have been Searched from Ruatha, so it is already established that no one is being hidden at Ruatha.

This is what Ruatha looks like
Another with more interior
The entire hold is in the moutain like a hobbit house, except it's the "town". Room after room after room and tunnels.

That is basically what a large majority of Northern Holds will look like. They were built into rocks during the early times when the settlers still had machines to cut rock (there are no more rock cutting instruments, or even knowledge of them, so everything must be done by hand now). There are no "streets" for her to wander. There is no way for her to exist as a sneak thief loner type life in a Hold, especially as a youngling.

Any aspect of thievery needs to be taken out of her history, there is really no point in someone's life where they are going to be a successful thief unless they are travelling as a vagabond, and keep in mind if you get caught that's it. Tattooed and exiled. There are very few adult thieves, but certainly not children.

Keep in mind that by the age of 10 they'd be having her working in the kitchens and the like, pulling her weight, so she wouldn't be simply locked in the creche. Also, all children of a Hold receive at least minor schooling from Harpers, and in a wealthy Hold like Ruatha, she would have access to a means to an end through Crafting if she wanted. It is no backwater.

Firelizards are intelligent like birds or some reptiles are intelligent. They are not intelligent like people. Her firelizard would not dissuade her from, or persuade her to, or anything like that. It would comfort, provide with food, etc, but it would have no moral compass, or know between right and wrong. I also just want to mention here, because the history has the firelizard acting in very human ways, our firelizards do not speak at all. They communicate only through images sent via telepathy. Dragons speak telepathically, some more intelligently than others, and whers speak telepathically, far less intelligently and with more bestial aggression. So keep the method of communication in mind when you revise this history regarding the firelizard. The firelizard is only sending images, and then making audible chirps/growls and nuzzling/nipping etc.

the Holds do not have slums. The majority is indoors, as you saw above, but also everything is well-maintained. Pern is a barter economy, with a very swift and traditional punishment. You are sent to work the mines until you die, or you are exiled and you die. If you are hungry, you trade work for food. In a Hold you are taught by Harpers and have the opportunity to work and pay your way for a Craft. At the very least you can be a drudge and live comfortably until the day you die. There are no truly poor or downtrodden save those who break the rules and are then exiled. So there are no slums. The money that Pern does have, marks, are few and far between used by the very wealthy, but in such small quantities that there is no real imbalance on the worker level.

Dragon's aren't Searching for 'power' they are looking for empathy. A person must be empathic and of sound mind to Impress. This might be five or more children at a time (some larger hatchings require 55+ children) and Searches are conducted regularly, especially during a Pass. She would never go very long after being 12 turns old without running into a dragon at Ruatha Hold. But you can put off her Search for however long you would like (perhaps the dragons knew she wasn't ready).

@Quinn, your original idea was not awful. It's hard to fit certain backstories into a Pern setting if you don't know the specifics of the world, that's all! As is there are only a few things that need to be added to the history and one that should be altered. You're almost there! Subsequent characters will be much easier, believe me we've all been in your shoes so don't get discouraged! I am very wordy, this seems like way more than it is.

There are two Pern-wide events that your character would have been effected by/known about. The first occurred in SM:13 so your character would have been 10 turns old. While your character would have been safe inside the stone she calls home plenty of dragons and their riders were lost to this - when dragons die the other dragons keen. It's audible and with so many doing so it would have been hard to ignore even if she couldn't see what was going on outside. This is doubly worth mentioning because Ruatha is beholden to Fort Weyr and during the erratic storm of Threadfall the Weyrwoman of Fort died.

*13 [SM]: All across Pern, Thread falls in a massive, erratic storm, killing many dragons. The Weyrwoman of Fort dies, so too the Weyrleader of Telgar, and both Weyrleader and Weyrwoman of Southern. Eastern Weyr suffers losses to its fighting force. Igen, Keroon, and the beastcrafters between them lose many animals, and Igen's minor holds are temporarily evacuated. Ista, the island Weyr, is flooded with refugees, many of them from Bay Hold in the south, which lost all of its crops. Dalibor's territories are razed high and low, but at least its riders are (mostly) intact.

The second occurred more recently, WI:17. Your character would have been 14 and while this may not have directly impacted her it certainly was something that caused a scare. With such a high mortality rate it is likely everyone was on their toes in regards to trying to avoid anyone who appeared ill.

***17 [WI] During an expedition in the south assisting Grove Weyr an alarming number of dragonriders and wherhandlers fall ill. Many resources are discovered during the expedition, including a handful of new flora and fauna, but it hardly makes up for the losses suffered. Thanks to travel between Grove and Dalibor before the outbreak was discovered the plague ransacked the western Weyr as well. With a mortality rate of 50% both Dalibor and Grove suffered heavy loss of life. Quarantine is put in place on Dalibor Weyr but it is too late: a handful of riders, handlers, and weyrfolk leave the Weyr and act as vectors in spreading the unnamed plague across Pern.

Once you've added those events and your character's reaction to them into your history you're almost good to go! The bit for altering comes at the end where your character is Searched. Overall Weyrs only Search from their own areas and Ruatha is beholden to Fort, not Dalibor, so how your character was Searched and ended up at Dalibor Weyr instead of Fort needs some clarification. It could be as simple as a Dalibor rider was visiting for the spring Gather and their dragon insisted that your character come back to Dalibor with them. (A Gather is a large celebration with dancing, singing, lots of pop-up booths for traders to sell their wares in, and at Ruatha they have horse racing as well. The larger Gathers draw in crowds from all over so it wouldn't be unthinkable to have a Dalibor rider pop in on one.)
