Closing the door of the stables behind her, tugging on the handle to make sure it was properly secured, Shuli breathed a sigh of relief... it had taken a bit of time, but she had finally gotten Ebon settled down in his new home, able to leave him to rest and recover from the stress of betweening while dangling below the claws of a massive dragon. Luckily, Callum was true to his word, and his stable was ready for him... isolated from other horses, stocked with hay, feed, and water, and even set up with a basic set of grooming tools to tide her over until she got her own tack and gear unpacked and set up.

Leaning up against the walls of the stables, she took a deep breath as the reality of her situation settled on her once more. Dealing with packing and training Ebon to accept the lift harness, then dealing with her own fear of flying on dragonback, then dealing with Ebon after they had landed... she had so much to distract herself with since the news of her betrothal that she hadn't really had much time for it to truly settle in... and now, in this quiet moment, in a new Hold she had never been to before, surrounded by people she didn't know, everything rushed in on her at once. She was getting married to a man who used to be her brother-in-law, a man she knew, but not very well. On top of that, she was going to be a mother to his children... her sister's children, now her niece and nephews, soon her sons and daughter. All this, and she hadn't even had a boyfriend, kept far away from such things by her father and her duties and her lessons.

Suddenly, a vague feeling on the edge of her perception that had been growing stronger by the moment finally pushed through the mire of her self-reflection, and she realized there were people near her, looking at her. Looking up, she saw four figures, and it took her a moment to realize it was none other than her husband-to-be, Callum, and his children... soon, her children: Caasum, Penna, and Pascal. Reddening slightly, having no idea just how long they had watched her leaning against the wall silently panicking over her situation, she stood up straight and curtseyed toward Callum, saying, "My Lord, I'm sorry, I did not notice you at first, I was... lost in thought." What thoughts, she kept to herself as she also realized she was far from presenting the proper appearance of a soon-to-be-Lady Holder to her soon-to-be husband; not wanting to ruin a good dress when she had to ride on dragonback and deal with Ebon, she was wearing a short-sleeved cotton shirt, thick cotton riding pants that hugged her legs, and knee-high wherryhide riding boots, along with a pair of wherryhide riding gloves, all of which were covered in a light dusting of dirt and straw dust from the stables. "I... apologize for my appearance, my Lord," she continued, giving another slight apologetic curtsey, "I did not want to ruin one of my dresses on the trip here, knowing I would have to escort Ebon to the stables after our landing. I did... not expect to see you so soon."

Though he had no desire to stable a wild willed stallion he had agreed when her father sent word she wished to bring Ebon along. In all he knew about his wife-to-be, which was admittedly not as much as he’d known about her elder sister prior to their marriage, he had learned she adored the black beast. Far be it for him to demand she leave him behind; Callum doubted she was ecstatic about their marriage arrangement in the first place so if he could offer her some amount of happiness he would do so. Beastcrafters had been collaborated with before her arrival to see what they would need to do in order to prepare for the stallion’s arrival. They had worked with crafters in order to erect a stable set away from that which housed the small herd of mares and geldings the Lord Holder had in his possession. Strong walls with room for his stall and all the storage for his food and tact were offered, Ebon would live the life of luxury in Crescent. In the pasture they often turned the runners out to they had also erected a wall presumably tall enough to keep the stallion from jumping and chasing after the mares - while he was not opposed to eventually breeding runners he had been warned stallions could be quite persistent in their amorous endeavors and he did not wish harm to come to the runners he already owned. All of the preparation had begun the moment Callum accepted Shuli’s father’s proposal and he’d learned she would wish to bring Ebon along with her. All of it had been done for her and he hoped she appreciated the efforts. Starting things off on the right foot was important to Callum, which was why he had not waited at home for her to arrive but had instead gathered the children in order to meet her at the stables.

Each of the children were dressed in fine clothes - a far cry from the finery they wore to Gathers and other important events but high quality all the same. The entire walk through the Hold he’d done his best to explain, yet again, the complicated nature of things. Their aunt would soon become ‘mother’ and that did not mean they did not love their mother any less or that he loved her any less but that this was how things were. It was difficult to tell how his eldest son felt about things, though he suspected he was not a fan of the arrangement. Caasum, he suspected, knew of his father’s relationship with Oreanda and did not approve of that; to think he would approve of a woman coming into their home and taking his late mother’s place there as well was foolish. In time he hoped all the children would come to love Shuli, as hard as this was on them he worried it was just as difficult for her. Filling another woman’s shoes when it came to the hearth and home was intimidating, to fill her place as a mother - and the woman having been her sister no less - was so much more.

Waiting outside until they heard the stallion settle the family had entered silently, his youngest son and his daughter on either side of him holding his hands while Caasum stood slightly apart. He’d been aloof since his mother’s passing, would Shuli’s presence help with that or make it worse? He didn’t know and as good as he was with his children he found it difficult to connect with his son. They needed a heart to heart, but now was neither the time or place. Clearing his throat just as Shuli turned her attention to them he offered a warm smile, ”My Lady there is nothing to apologize for, you’ve had your hands full. They warned me your Ebon was a spirited beast. I’m glad I took the advice of my crafters in establishing a stable just for him.” Penna bounced some in place as she heard the stallion in his stall and Callum gave her hand a squeeze, ”Remember we talked about this, Ebon is not a runner you can ride. There are plenty of others to choose from though.”

Returning his attention to his wife-to-be he shook his head, the welcoming smile still splitting his face. ”There is no need to apologize, please, call me Callum. We are to be wed, I do not expect you to address me so formally. You dressed practically for what needed to be done. I appreciate that.” Pascal tugged at his father’s hand and he let the youngest go so he could run to Shuli as he wished. ”We wanted to welcome you properly and walk you home. If you are done here?”

Throughout his father's explanation of how their aunt was to become their mother, Caas's face remained notably unmoved. The boy was ten, and while he may not fully understand the politics behind a Lord Holder's marriage, the concept of an aunt becoming a mother was not difficult to understand. Marriage vows would bound Callum and Shuli together so that their little family could be complete once again and Crescent would have a new Lady Holder; if only it were that easy to replace what had been lost from their hearts. Callum was right to suspect that Caasum was not thrilled at the prospect of a stranger taking up his mother's place in their family which made it simple that Shuli wasn't a stranger after all.

Shuli was family, already. Their mother's blood was her blood, and while she would never be Paasha, was it so wrong of him to hope that she would become his mother in spirit as well as name? He wanted to like her, desperately, and he hoped his father would come to like her too. Maybe the gossipers would finally be silenced by this marriage, or maybe not, but it hurt him to know that there were whispers going around about his father and that he could do nothing to stop them. If he had the power to do something about it- well, who was going to listen to a ten turn old anyway? Even if he was the future Lord Holder of Crescent? Right now, all he could do was make Shuli feel welcome. Even a "boy" could manage that.

Sucking in a breath, Caasum puffed up his chest a little before striding up to the woman after his father had finished his greetings. "I'm Caasum," he declared. "Welcome to Crescent." He stuck out his hand, hesitating somewhere between a handshake and a hug, before at last looking to Shuli to decide which one she was most comfortable with. A handshake just seemed so...formal, but a hug was also a little...awkward? Regardless of the end result, Caas didn't mind Shuli's informal appearance in the least. She was practical, just like her sister - their mom. And she had a big horse - even if he couldn't ride him - which was pretty cool. All in all, it was a promising start.

Shuli smiled at Callum as he spoke, a small amount of the tension in her body evaporating as the man spoke. He was just as friendly and practical as Paasha had said he was, and the fact that the children did not seem to be overly upset about her presence was a very good sign. "I wish to thank you for the extra effort you put forth for Ebon... as you likely have heard, I am the only person he allows to work with him, so I could not leave him behind. We... understand each other, in a way." Turning to Penna as Callum reminded the young girl that Ebon was off-limits to her, Shuli smiled and added, "You cannot ride Ebon, but as long as you are with me, he will let you touch him, and we can get you a runner of your own, and you can ride with me and Ebon anytime you wish, I promise!" Turning her attention back to the group as a whole, she smiled wider and added, "That goes for everyone, of course. I will be glad to show you all how to take care of and ride runners... I was trained extensively by the best Beastcrafter my father could find." Internally, she hoped at least some of the family would take her up on it... she had no idea about their feelings on runners, but hoped that she would be able to share her passion with at least some of her new family.

She watched carefully as Caasum approached, gauging his body language as best she could. She figured the younger children might not fully appreciate the transition from their mother and Shuli, at least not yet, but Caasum was older, and more likely to understand the more subtle nuances of the situation. His greeting was polite, his voice strong... the boy had clearly been taking to his lessons well, and Shuli replied, "Thank you, Caasum, it means much to me to have you accept me into your Hold, and hopefully into your home." She saw his awkward half-handshake/half-open-arms-for-a-hug pose, and decided to dispense with formalities, as Callum had requested, and embraced the young heir in a close hug, holding it just long enough to show her desire for acceptance, but not long enough to show a familiarity she had yet to earn.

Releasing the hug and stepping back, she noticed that Caasum's younger brother had approached as she was speaking to the elder boy, Pascal standing shyly with one finger on his lips as his eyes went between his aunt-soon-to-be-mother and his older brother. "Hello, Pascal," she said, her smile bright as she knelt down to be eye-to-eye with the younger boy, "Would you like a hug, as well?" A small smile crossed the boy's lips as he nodded shyly, and Shuli leaned forward to embrace the child, his arms wrapping around her neck as she squeezed him firmly and kissed him on the cheek. Releasing Pascal from the hug, the boy ran back to his father, slipping behind Callum's leg and looking at Shuli, his shyness back yet a smile on his face.

Standing back up and walking up to Callum, she subtly presented her elbow to allow him to smoothly slide his arm into hers without looking like she was taking the initiative, she said, "It has been a long day, and I would like to rest, but if there are any particularly interesting sights around the Hold you would like to show me in what is to be my new home here at Crescent, I would be happy to take a more scenic route home, Callum."

Callum nodded as she spoke of her runner, ”Your father was quite clear in the fact you could not leave him behind.” Nor would the man have asked her to, no matter the efforts he needed to put forth to accommodate the stallion. With any woman he may have chosen there would have been accommodations to be made, in some ways the effort of a new stable being built was far less than others. He stood back and watched as she interacted with his children, once they were wed they would be her children as well so it was important to note how she handled them from the get go. It helped, in his mind at least, that they were already related. The move from ‘aunt’ to ‘mother’ would potentially be strange and likely a touch difficult but he believed he had made the right choice. Better a woman they already knew than a complete stranger. Only time would tell if his instincts in the matter had been right.

Seeing her hugging the boys brought a smile to his face, the first genuine smile he’d entertained in many seasons that was not inspired by a certain bronzehandler. Now was not the time to think of her, however, and so he pushed thoughts of her from his mind as he looked over his bride-to-be and his children. Pascal returned to him and he stood with his arm offered out for Shuli. When she accepted his arm he inclined his head towards the woman, ”I’m afraid Penna will take a bit more time to warm up to you.” Then he stood upright and began to lead the way from the stables. Caasum, for his part, had played the welcoming role well and Callum was proud of him. When they were back in their home he needed to remember to tell him as much. Perhaps he would see if there was anything the young boy had his eye on. A new firelizard? A weasel like his own? Argo was beloved by all of the children with his mischievous ways. It wouldn’t hurt to ask.

”There are plenty of interesting things to see around Crescent and much to know. As I am sure you are aware there are three major land masses that make up the western continent. Crescent is the only Hold on this particular land mass while Western Hold is to the south west of us down the strait on the other land mass. Dalibor Weyr is on its own island to the north of us.” Leading his family from the stables and across the courtyard he motioned to the large opening in the wall that led to the winding paths to the sea, ”We are fortunate enough to play host to two crafthalls, the dolphinhall and the minerhall. Crescent has a large quarry and in the last handful of turns has begun structuring a proper mine to pull ore from the depths. We have an active port for trade and a ferry runs regularly between our shores and Dalibor’s.” This was likely not the introduction to her new home she wanted, most people likely did not wish to have a lesson in geography, yet Callum could think of nothing else to talk about. As collected as he appeared he was nervous about bringing Shuli into his life; his connection with Paasha had taken time to flourish while the connection he had with Oreanda was simply organic and blossomed on its own. He had no real idea of how to foster a relationship from scratch, but he knew for the sake of his children he should try. Even if they would never love each other he wished for Shuli to like him and love his children. ”There is an area of the beach that is reserved for the use of my, our, family. You may use it anytime you wish.”

They had made their way across the courtyard to the steps leading to the grand doors of their home. ”Here we are. A room has been set up for you so you can relax and rest. Your room has a bathing room attached and if you need any assistance or a meal you may call upon the staff. They are here to serve you, as am I.”

It would be improper to take her to his bed before they had been officially Joined, and even after he did not know if she would wish to share a bed with him regularly outside of what would be needed to continue their bloodlines. Her room, while separate from his, was joined to it by the shared bathing room. Doors could be closed from the bed rooms to offer privacy and he had no intentions of encroaching on her space. Taking the steps slowly he led his family up to the doors which were opened for them by members of the staff. ”Here we are, home sweet home.”
