Dalibor is a semi-canon Dragonriders of Pern site. No knowledge of the series or site is required to join; players of all experience levels are welcome here. Founded in 2008 on Proboards and moved to Jcink in 2013, Dalibor has been running for nine years.

News
Winter, 18th Turn, 11th Pass

Upcoming Flights/Runs:
Red Ingoth

Upcoming Hatchings:

Winter is in full swing as the Northwest reaches the middle stages of the cold month, and Dalibor, taking full advantage of a crackdust filled break in Threadfall, is back at it again. Delving into the Southern ice and snow, they have paired with Grove Weyr to fully explore the lands they only slightly uncovered the previous turn during the Jungle Expedition. This, however, will not be a warm and relaxing waltz through the woods; although was it ever that to begin with?

After the ceremony concluded with vows shared and a chaste kiss a multitude of holdfolk went to work transforming the courtyard to better suit a gather. The runner that acted as an aisle was rolled and taken away to the washroom where it would be meticulously cleaned over the next few days. Metal tables were carried out and chairs that had acted as seating for wedding guests shifted to surround said tables so that people might sit and enjoy their fill of food. Feasts that had been toiled over throughout the day in the kitchens were brought out on massive platters and any manner of plates and utensils were placed strategically so that people could pick and choose their favorite foods. Wine flowed freely, filling many a cup at a number of tables set up solely for the drink - though Crescent was separated from the Weyr by water the holdfolk were well aware to be on the watch for candidate knots or those belonging to weyrlings or wherlings.

Harpers struck up a lively tune to help kick things off as the Lord and Lady Holder returned from stabling the Lady’s runner. Walking arm and arm across the courtyard Callum had a pleasant smile on his face as he escorted his new wife back into the fray. The children were around, being tended by their caregivers as they enjoyed a meal before browsing the merchant stalls or dancing. Cocking his head towards his wife Callum offered quietly, ”You have brought joy back to Crescent, my Lady.” From the looks on the faces of those around them it seemed that his words rang true.

A wedding was a beautiful occasion, one that Aeslyn had no issue piggybacking on in order to fill her purse with marks. It had taken a sevenday or so for what’s-his-name from the kitchens to gather up a sizeable amount of firelizard eggs from the beach for her. Sami had not risen lately in order to provide her with a clutch to sell to the highest bidder, a pity in some respects yet at the same time she knew the orange would likely guard her clutch jealousy and that just wouldn’t do. Filling a woven reed basket with sand and shells she placed a single egg in the middle of the basket while the rest remained hidden beneath the cloth she used to cover her makeshift stand. In all her turns she’d found one truth to ring true: the shorter the supply the higher the demand. As long as she took her time placing a new egg in the ‘nest’ she could charge whatever she wanted and people would be willing to pay it.

To help her in earning the most marks possible she’d gotten her hands on some gold leaf. It was typically pricey, however she had pilfered some from the Weyr during the Moon Masque. Why did all their Goldentines have to be gold anyway? Her use was far more beneficial - to her at least. Carefully she’d applied a tacky substance to the eggs and used the gold leaf to make them appear golden. Why if people thought they were getting a queen egg they’d offer marks hand over fist! She’d be drowning in marks by the time the day was through and then she could enjoy all the finest things like she deserved.

Dressed down for the moment she was doing her best to blend in with the merchants around her so that when all was said and done she could change clothes and be forgotten. Blonde hair had been braided with plenty of flowers, a gift from one of the men working in the washroom. A simple dress in Tillek blue hugged her curves without showing off too much, one of the few modest dresses she owned. Seeing someone passing by she waved excitedly to them, ”Hello there! Are you interested in a firelizard? A queen I’ll bet, look at that shimmery egg! I’ve no means to take on such a noble creature but you look like you’d be a right fit! Come come, we can discuss the price. Hurry now, before she hatches!”

Open to whoever would like a firelizard, get ‘em while she’s got ‘em! Also open for other tags. Also do not worry, I am not charging site-marks for these.

Of course Baria was there.

She'd slipped free of Basasius' careful watch and was purusing the stalls with a bag of marks carefully tucked under the folds of her skirt. She was wearing Western's colours, a brand new dress made for just this occasion, with knee-high boots that had performed admirably but weren't quite up for dancing just yet. She'd abandon them later when she talked her husband into a twirl or two.

They'd paid all the proper respects to the Lord and Lady Holder, all manners and propriety before allowing them to see everyone else. The pair would, no doubt, hunt them down again later - but for now she was free to wander and explore and drive her husband mad by hiding from him. Not that she'd try very hard.

"What do we have here?" She asked looking the eggs over with a grin. She leaned in, hand pressed to her bag of marks to keep it from swinging and simultaneously assure herself that it was there. "Very impressive," she remarked, eyes landing on the 'gold' egg with a smirk. "What are you asking? Not just for that one, of course." No need to be greedy, after all...

K'ton & Ironth
Open for interaction

He hadn't intended to show up at the gather, he hadn't attended the wedding after all, but some whining from Ironth and incessant chattering from both Noisy and Stink had him touching down with the blue. Ironth back winged neatly, creating a slight breeze as he landed in the meadow set aside for dragon use. You'll have fun, don't lie to yourself and blame us, Ironth told him with amusement. "Yeah, yeah," he muttered as he slid down the dragon's side to land just as neatly as the dragon on his feet.

"Enjoy your gossiping," he gave the blue a jaunty wave and called his iron and pink to him. "Be good you two," he demanded darkly, "Best behavior and there will be a treat in it for you." K'ton had long learned the way to both firelizards hearts. Treats and food. The best use of his marks were treats and food for both firelizards. Stink was coming along, her bad attitude calming in some degrees. Noisy helped, as did Ironth, but she was a sucker for a good treat.

K'ton ambled along the rest of the merchants, checking out the wares they were hawking when the woman's voice shouted above the din. Get one, Ironth told him directly and K'ton groaned. His blue was always good about being nosy when it came to gathers, always wanting to know what was going on and K'ton wasn't surprised he'd picked up the woman hawking her firelizard eggs. Two is enough, he said. He had no real desire to have more than two. Two was plenty in his opinion. One more. Only one more and then I won't ask again, Ironth pleaded.

K'ton sighed heavily and walked over to the woman selling the lizard eggs. He looked side eyed at the egg. It'll be a queen, Ironth told him smugly and K'ton shook his head. The bluerider highly doubted it but whatever made his dragon happy. "How much?" he asked, already knowing he'd probably hand over what ever she asked for. He always had marks on hand and tended to be a little more tight fisted than he let on.

He glanced over when the Lady Holder of Western made her appearance known and smirked at her words to the egg hawker. "I'll let the lady have this egg yeah? Got anything else in that lumpy little basket?" he asked, "Got a dragon a little hard up for some firelizards."

He had missed the wedding, weddings were boring affairs after all; but there was to be a gather, and to a gather he was going to go! They were fun, and eventful, filled with food, and women and men and flirting. Dancing and touching! Oh, he was just so excited to go. Varith was grumbling to him as they flew in for the landing to the hold. "Now now, don't be like that, maybe you could make a friend?" He asked.

I don't need friends, I just need you.

"You say, but why don't you admit that you were enjoying yourself with that burgundy too."

I can't fly a burgundy, nor can I fly a queen either, none of this horrid Weyr can without causing her to between somewhere else.

"Still sore about that? Well I guess you all are." He frowned as the black settled down in the meadow. "So what if you can't 'fly' a burgundy, you don't need a female to enjoy yourself." He responded.

The black huffed. Just go, mine. He said, nudging Sev'ren forwards. Since you insist on such things, I will find a place to sun And with that the dragon was off to go and do just as he said.

"Hmm, there are usually some great wares to be bought during these kinds of Gatherings, shall we?" He asked, pulling back the expensive black shirt underneath his riding leathers to poke at the sleeping Green. "Jade, there are things to be learned, wake up." He poked a few times. Sleepy little flitt.

He wandered about, cocking his head as he saw the small gathering around a woman with a bowl. "Hmm, what's this?"

Jade perked up and popped a tiny green head from his shirt as curiosity was spiked.

He came in close to the other two and stared. "Oooh, more littles!" He said happily. He squeezed into peek at the eggs between the other two. "Tell me you have more than one of the precious littles." He said, hearing a heavy sigh in his head from Varith.

The little green cooed softly in her melodic tone, flapping out from under his shirt to stare at the gold leafed egg in wonder. What was it? It was so shiny, not like the eggs of her siblings, she had to know! She looked to Sev'ren, then back at the egg.

Adaya was more than willing to get out of the weyr for a few candlemarks. Of her collection of pets, only Shay had decided to join her. Fruity hadn't wanted to, and Scuttle seemed unwilling to leave her spot right in the middle of Adaya's bed. But the Red wasn't going to be able to fit where she was for much longer. Shay was, in fact, quite sore about this. She liked her spot, draped across her girl's shoulders.

The small girl's eyes were wide as she took in everything. She hadn't been able to make the wedding, but seeing as she didn't know either the Lord Holder or his new wife personally, she didn't think it would matter too much. She'd only been able to get a few candlemarks out of the kitchens, after all. Better to spend them at the Gather, instead of at a boring wedding. She wandered from one stall to another before her attention was caught by a woman calling about flit eggs. She wove her way through the crowd-not difficult for a person of small size-and looked up at the woman. Maybe she'd be able to get another flit, as long as Shay could play nice.

Adaya stuck her hand into her pouch of marks and drew out a small few. She held them out to the woman, a questioning look on her face. She didn't think her marks would be enough, but she was willing to try. Even if it was just a smaller egg, she would be okay with that.
_________________________________

Caliska had forced herself to wake up for the Gather. She had expected her caravan to be somewhere among the stalls, likely simply trying to sell off whatever they could, then buy new things, before heading back to Western Hold. She hadn't seen them in several turns now. She was eager to see how her sisters were, and how her baby brother was growing up. She'd thought about writing letters, but she didn't know if anyone within the caravan could read. She hadn't been able to before becoming a Candidate, after all.

She kept her eyes open as she wandered the stalls, looking for anyone who seemed even a little familiar. Maybe old Neran had come to sell wherry feathers or the last of the dried meats. Maybe they were selling some hides they'd gotten from Western before. But her attention shifted when she heard a woman mention flit eggs, and glittering shells. Skeptical, she approached.

She hadn't seen a queen flit egg herself, so she didn't know whether they came with the same sheen a queen dragon egg did. Flit eggs was one thing her caravan had never dealt with. They were more difficult to tend to than other goods, and there was no way of knowing exactly when they would hatch. Too much risk and not enough reward. What if they hatched between holds? They'd be stuck with a bunch of tiny mouths to feed, or fending off the ones that decided to go wild.

But something about the egg the woman was parading around as a Queen struck Caliska as odd. The way the light reflected off the gold coloring, perhaps, or the size of the egg.

"How much're ya askin'?" she asked finally. She was sure it was more than she had, of course, but it was worth finding out how much this woman thought she could sell the egg for. Maybe there were other, smaller eggs that she could afford. And if not, well, the eggs on the sands were going to hatch soon, and then she'd have her hands full with a hatchling.

OOC: Since we are only allowed one firelizard queen per player, please if that actually IS a queen, DNI to anyone but Azaril, if there is a random roll or something for it and I happen to win. c: Additionally, Azaril is only open for colors she does not have, as I'm aiming for one of each, so I'll be happy for any she doesn't currently have in her faire. She has iron, bronze, tan, orange, red, and blue. Any colors not these will be much appreciated! Any other characters here are open for anything!

Azaril was more than happy to make the ride over to Crescent for the wedding and the Gather. The wedding had been so beautiful, and she loved Gathers! She'd stabled Thanatos in the appropriate place, and then watched the ceremony with smiles--and even a little bit of tearing up at the end!--before the Gather had kicked off. She'd saved up all her marks to spend at a Gather such as this. It wasn't as much as some would have, she supposed. Yet she would be choosing carefully, whatever she bought. No sooner had she started wandering the stalls with green eyes wide, then a voice caught her attention. She had left Fenrir and Naga at home. They were just too big to bring here, for such an event as this. Normally she would have. But the 'howler might frighten some people. Dalibor was used to them. Crescent might not be. And Naga was content to stay with him and oversee keeping her faire of firelizards where they belonged--in her room, behaving. She had, once more, brought Pabu, her ferret, along for company. He, at least, was small and easy to watch.

Firelizard eggs? She had enough of those, and yet there was an egg that the girl had claimed was a queen. She'd seen a couple other people with large faires. They had queens, and those queens kept all the rest of the firelizards in order. They listened to them, unequivocally, and did as they bade. If she trained up a little queen...maybe that one could keep the others out of trouble. They didn't always listen to Cereza nor Alucard. Often they popped in unwanted, and she'd struggled to get her orange, Tora, to listen properly. Most of them weren't too bad, otherwise. Yet there would be many people wanting to buy a queen egg, if that's what it was. Plus, many wouldn't already have even one. Still, it wasn't as if this were some clutch, available to all. It was fair to offer to buy it, as a bunch were already doing, wasn't it? She did have enough marks to warrant it...it would just render her broke for quite some time. Plus, maybe there was a sport in one of these? She had always wanted a white or yellow. They were SO cute. So, unable to quite resist temptation, she shyly stepped forward and said,

"I'd be interested in knowing how much they are, too," though she had to force herself to raise her voice enough to be heard over the din. She wasn't really very good at projecting it. She certainly could--she had to be able to do that much, as a Harper apprentice! She simply wasn't comfortable with it.

Tay loved Gathers! And weddings! Social events of any kind, really! The bubbly eighteen turn old had drawn the Lord and new Lady, and much else, her sketch pad at the ready. She was selling a lot of her sketches and drawings here, and had saved up a sizable amount of marks since she'd come to Dalibor, and word of her skill had spread. On to painting, now, she had been practicing that about four turns, and her paintings, though they took a lot longer, were very good now, too. Art was her life--that and hoping one day, she might have a dragon of her very own! She had no firelizard, but she'd always wanted one. She'd been keen to buy perhaps a few things, yet the voice that cut through her thoughts made her stop in her tracks! It wasn't a queen egg she even cared about--though they were lovely, and who didn't want a little queen on their shoulder? She could already see it had drawn everyone's attention. Everyone was asking how much it was. She, for her part, wandered up and asked,

"How much for any of them? I'd love to have one--any!--of these." Sure, it would cost her a lot, but she really, really wanted a firelizard. So many of the candidates had them--some quite a few!--and she didn't have one yet herself at all. Having one of any color would be fantastic! So, she hoped that she wasn't too late to acquire one, and looked on hopefully.

Basasius had been busy talking to Callum about inter-Hold trade, and gifting the man a bottle of his best Paradise White - lovely stuff, really, with hints of fruits from the Southern Continent, as well as a woven reed hammock large enough for himself and his new wife to make use of in the warmer months - and hadn't immediately noticed his beloved wife was missing.

Shard it all. There was only one explanation for Baria being missing from his side at an event like this, and it was usually because she'd spotted something she fancied to spend Marks on. Sometimes it worked out in his benefit, other times it was a crapshoot of epic proportions and ended up with some new adornment - practical almost always - for his desk or their bedroom.

He'd excused himself politely, Jakol quickly picking up her scent and beelining through the crowd until Basasius picked up on the noise and gathering long before his Icehowler identified where his Master's Mistress was. The Lord Holder of Western wandered pointedly up to the group, and lingered momentarily to get the idea of what, precisely, was going on here?

Jakol did laps around several stalls, investigating but too well-behaved to ever snatch anything off a table or take anything offered him by anyone. His was the one that fed him, and Bas had trained him well to the dangers of taking things from strangers. Something that, Marks or no, he worried forever over his wife's antics and habits of doing. She had, however, been wanting a Firelizard and as Bas craned his head easily over the small group of shorter Gather-goers, he spotted the egg drawing all the attention, as well as the others.

"Found ourself some entertainment, I see," he bespoke his wife with a gentle hand against the small of her back, his arm following in short order until she was leaned up comfortably against his side and hip. "I suppose the chances are rather good that I'll be having to arrange for a new bed for one of these in our room at some point, mmm? If of course there's any of them left by the time the others have a look."

Bas himself wasn't terribly interested in flits, but he understood that right place, right time was a thing for many occasions, and it wouldn't be unheard of for a Lord Holder or a Lady Holder to end up with one of the winged, miniature denizens of dragon kind. His wife, however, seemed much more excited about the premise of flit eggs than he did; and he was happy to be excited for her, all the same.

Ly'on hadn't really intended to go to the wedding. He was just too young to be interested in such things. But his mother was going and wouldn't stop talking about how lovely and romantic it was, so he had eventually given in to give her a ride. He didn't really want to spend the whole day with his mother though. He wasn't a child anymore after all. He was a rider now and rider's weren't supposed to need their mothers. Even if he did still see his often. So, instead he had awkardly asked Asha if she'd like to go with him.

Upon hearing this, Galya thought it was absolutely precious and insisted on making outfits for both of them. For Ly'on, a white shirt with frilled cuffs and collar. A dark green scarf and matching pants that closely matched the color of Gruyeth's hide. He looked quite the little dandy gentleman, despite the frown he made at all the frills. For Asha, Galya had chosen soft fabric of light blues to match the girl's lovely eyes. The dress went down to her knees, so she could still run if she wanted, and was edged with more frills and little ribbons of a darker blue. Galya had even helped do Asha's hair with a little crown of braids, tied off with a blue ribbon, that left the rest of her lovely locks falling freely. They made such an adorable pair that Ly'on was soon blushing freely at all the mushy comments his mother kept making.

Fortunately, Galya had also announced she was getting a ride with another rider, so Ly'on wouldn't have to deal with her gushing the whole way to Crescent. It did mean he'd be riding alone with Asha though and he tried not to hide his nerves and blush. He blamed his mother's silly clothes. They were just kids, after all, and Asha was even younger than he was. They were just going to have some fun and get out for a change. Gruyeth found the whole thing entirely too amusing and wouldn't stop chuckling the whole way and commenting about how his boy was 'finally becoming a man' or some silly comment like that.

They arrived just in time and Ly'on dismounted his dragon to help Asha down. Don't stay out too late you two! the viridian chortled heartily. Then he took off to a large field outside the hold where several dragons were waiting for their riders.

Finally free of adults and dragons making silly comments, Ly'on turned to Asha and ventured a shy smile. "Sorry about him," he murmured, blushing with embarrasment. He tugged at his frilly sleeves absently. Pretty clothes were nice, but he wished they could be a bit more comfortable. "What would you like to see first? I think I heard someone say there were flit eggs." They both liked flits, after all, it might be a good place to start. His own large faire was fluttering around, taking perches to watch, or investigating various booths. He was never without at least one though, and today it was Hero, the purple flit sitting on his shoulder to take up his proud duty of guarding the young people.

@Zane @Ives (flit eggs? only if there are enough!)

~

Eryonthi had never been in a place with so many people talking and rushing about. She'd been to hatchings, of course, but that was much different. She had been too nervous to go to any of the other gathers and parties before this. But when Swithin had announced they could go, Eryosk had been delighted at the prospect. She could hardly deny her wher, who had been so patient with her up until now. So here they were. Eryonthi dressed in a pale purple dress and ribbons, including one over her eyes, that Yo'vro helped her pick out. He claimed she looked lovely in it and Eryosk conferred, so she hoped they were right. She didn't really want to draw too much attention by being out of place. Though the outfit was definately strange to her. She had never really tried wearing a dress before. It was kind of nice.

Not wanting to go alone, Eryonthi had invited her classmate Vatalian to come with her. She could have gone with her brother, but she really didn't want him hovering over her the whole time like she might break. He was here though, probably with some of his own classmates and secretly keeping an eye on her. Eryosk was here too, helping her see, though she had wisely opted to leave Silmaug at home.

Taking a breath, Eryonthi held onto Eryosk's leafy tail and stepped out into the Gather. There were so many sounds and smells and people. It was amazing, but also a bit frightening. Shrinking into herself shyly, tilted her head towards Vatalian. "It is all so different. What...what should we see first?" She couldn't help a smile then. Because Eryosk was sharing images with her and she could see it! Maybe not the same as with her own eyes, but it was still wonderful. She wasn't sure she would mind where they went so long as she could see and try new things.

@Captain (hope that works!)

Asha had heard of the wedding that was to be held for Lord Callum and his new bride. The Weyr was buzzing with talk of the pair, and Asha felt it was her duty to pay attention to any news of the holds surrounding the Weyr. She knew little of Lord Callum, beyond what she had heard. He had children, from the late Lady Paasha, and so she hoped that his new Lady would be a proud mother to them. Every child deserved to have parents, and Lord Callum's children were young enough that they may only ever know Lady Shuli. It was a blessing in disguise, one she was sure that Lord Callum would be grateful for.

When Ly'on approached her to ask if she would attend the gather with him, the invitation was one she readily accepted. She could never turn down the opportunity to spend time with her closest friend. To witness such a historical event would certainly have its advantages as well, though it was a strange thing for a girl her age to be concerned with. Asha rarely spent time playing with the other children in the creche, or getting to know those her age. She stuck around the adults, the riders of the Weyr, where she thought her time would be best spent. She missed the world that her father and mother had been so wholly a part of, including the measure of politics she had been privy to from time to time. She would have spent more time with Rayna, time permitting, but the goldrider was a busy woman. Even so, Asha considered her to be the only family that she had left.

Galya had done up a beautiful dress for her, and Asha had gratefully admired the detail. She had thanked her, more than once, for her kindness. The picture that G'len had drawn of her family, all together, was glanced at for some time before they made to leave. She couldn't help but wonder if they were still alive, somewhere, hoping for her to carry on in their stead. There was nothing that she desired more than to restore her mothers honor, and reputation, among those whom spoke ill of her time as Weyrwoman.

Smoothing out her dress, Asha accepted aid from Ly'on as Gruyeth was mounted. She offered him a warm smile, blue eyes alight with curiosity at seeing how flustered the poor boy was. He looked so handsome, and grown up, in his gather clothes. Galya had done a lovely job; she would have to pick her out a gift at the gather, so as to better thank her for the trouble she'd gone through. Once her riding straps were secure, and the great viridian had taken to the skies, the raven-haired girl reached back to place her hand atop Ly'on's.

The trip /between/ was quick, and frankly she was used to the cold nothingness. It did not frighten her, though the chill remained in her bones. As they spiraled down, and Gruyeth came to land, she waited for Ly'on to dismount first. Then, as aid was again offered, she accepted it graciously. She was tall for a girl her age, but Ly'on still stood taller. He was growing up so fast, with his turn-day to come next season. She would have to find an appropriate gift for him also.

Gruyeth's remark went right over her head, and so he received the reply of: "Don't worry Gruyeth, we'll take care." She could hear the amusement in the viridian's tone, and again looked over to Ly'on rather curiously. There was wonder in the girls gaze, though she dared not question the boy. As they made their way through the grounds, Ly'on apologized. Asha, as perceptive as she was, noted the redness in the viridianrider's cheeks. She simply reached out, taking Ly'on's arm in hers. "It's alright," she meant to reassure him, not at all thinking that her actions may further the boys embarrassment.

At the mention of flit eggs, the girl brightened. "Lets go see," she exclaimed, knowing how much her friend loved his flits. She regarded the purple for a moment before reaching up with her free hand to carefully stroke her burgundies neck. Faros was keeping watch, much like Hero. The burgundy was wary of the strangers about them. Oblivion, the girls black, was keeping out of sight. Asha was sure that he was close by, able to feel his presence. "Thank you for inviting me Ly'on, I'm happy to be here with you." She was, truly. Turning to look upon the boy, she again noted how grown up he was starting to look. It was a turn until she would Stand for a dragon of her own, like each of her family members before her. She would carry on the tradition, and hopefully impress to a dragon that would help her to best serve, and honor, Dalibor.

Over to the flits the pair wandered, a voice calling out that there may have been something "shiny" in the lot. Asha made a contemplative "hm" sound at the woman's suggestion. She didn't see a gold shell among the lot, and so the truth of the woman's statement was questionable. Ly'on, who had a copper in his fare, was likely not looking to add a second queen to his numbers. She, admittedly, had not thought of impressing one herself. She had wondered about an orange, for, like Oblivion, they reminded her of her fathers flits. Even so, the flits chose, and so she held no aspirations of ever finding a little sub-queen. If one of the flits chose her, she would be grateful, as she had been upon her impression of Faros. Oblivion had been an unexpected, though welcome, addition. "What do you think Ly'on?" She cared to hear the boys opinion of what the clutch may hold.

Candi loved weddings! She loved the atmosphere, the music, the clothes, everything. She had been in awe of the harpers that played for the wedding. She wanted to be one of them. But alas, she was just an apprentice. A senior apprentice, sure, but and apprentice nonetheless. She had watched the wedding with rapt attention. She wasn’t all that interested in the lives of Lord and Lady Holders, but she couldn’t help but feel awash in romantic feelings. She knew this was a political thing. She knew the feelings between the two were likely for show. But still she left feeling her heart all a flutter.

Candi loved love. She loved the idea of being in love, though the idea of her tying herself to one person seemed disappointing to her. She loved flirting. She loved the reactions she got from people. So maybe love could wait.

Dressed in her Gather best, Candi took to the markets like a parched man took to water. Her skirts swirled around her legs as she moved from stall to stall, eyeing the goods. She wanted to get herself something nice. Her marks were burning a hole in her pocket and she had a mind to spend them. But on what?

Her attention was split between so many things. But then something caught her eye. Whersports. Wandering to the stall, the girl paused to look at the beautiful plumage on them all. There were Combis, Brundles, and Poppos. She had to admit, from the moment she set eyes on them, the Poppos had her attention. They were just so pretty! Many in shades of yellow or green. But one in specific caught her eye. It’s plumage was blue, and it’s throat sacs were a pleasing yellowy orange and teal. She knew right away she wanted him. What better pet for a harper than a lovely songbird?

She knew he was special, and he’d cost a fair few marks. But what was the point of sitting on marks when you wanted something? Money exchanged hands, and she was handed the Poppo on a short teather that fastened to her wrist. Beaming brightly, Candi looked at her new found friend.
“Let’s see… I think I’m going to name yoooou…. Poppy.” The whersport responded by trilling happily in it’s odd, chorusy way.

Oh dear, she’d expected to be able to single out one or two people at a time. Clearly she had underestimated the draw a “queen” egg would have on passerbys. With her best smile she curtsied to Western’s Lady Holder when her makeshift nest of eggs caught the Lady’s eye. ”Ah but doesn’t a Lady deserve the very best?” Though respectful of the woman’s status she still had a small amount of teasing to her tone. Looking over the eggs she thought she saw one give a small shake though it may have been her eyes playing tricks on her. Nevertheless it was that egg that she plucked from the nest to offer to Baria with a smirk, ”Just a quarter mark for this one, I think it will suit you well.” She had no real way of knowing one way or the other, shards half of these could be duds for all she really knew. Confidence was key, however, and so she continued along with all the confidence in the world - especially when it came to the “queen” egg still settled in the nest. With one egg spoken for she turned her eyes to the other hopeful souls. With each new face she saw in her mind’s eye a new pair of shoes or a new belt, by the end of it all maybe she’d be able to buy herself a whole new dress! One could never have too many dresses.

”My, aren’t you lovely?” She could have been talking to K’ton or Sev’ren - or both for as much as her eyes flitted between the two riders. Still smiling she suddenly had a rather mischievous glint to her eye as she leaned over the sand filled basket. Curling a finger in the direction of the riders she waited until they leaned in, or didn’t, ”First one to offer half a mark and take me for a drink when I’m all done gets this pretty little golden egg for himself. Do we have a deal?” Surely they’d want to take her up on that offer - who wouldn’t? Whichever of the two spoke up first would be the one to get it, while the other would have to settle for one of the other eggs. Not that it likely mattered, they might hatch out the same color in the end. Still, it was fun to pit men against each other… assuming they took the bait.

That left three eggs not spoken for and her eyes fell from the two riders to the other faces around her. ”Quarter mark each.” It wasn’t much to some but to others it was a sizeable amount. For a moment she wondered if some of the children crowding her stall would have enough but then she remembered it didn’t matter much if they didn’t because someone else would. Perhaps it was a harsh lesson for them but it was one they’d have to learn sooner or later. Yet here was one offering her what she’d asked and as she took the quarter mark from Adaya she handed over one of the eggs. There were so many people gathered now - it wouldn’t be such an issue if she had nearly enough eggs. Some of them were quiet and watched with wide wistful eyes while others were far more vocal about wanting an egg. Having sold one of the remaining trio that meant she only had a few left to dole out. Well shards, she should have had that kitchen boy get her more than this. Next time she’d be sure to have a whole slew of eggs to pawn off on people. Thankfully it seemed the twitch she saw from the egg she’d sold to Western’s Lady Holder hadn’t been a precursor to hatching - if that “queen” egg were to hatch in the hand of one of the riders while she was still trying to sell the last few she’d be found out as a fraud. She planned on being somewhere else when that happened.

Not having paid much mind to who showed up first she pointed at Taylei, holding out her hand for payment. If she paid up then she’d find herself the proud new owner of a firelizard egg. If she didn’t… well there were plenty others still waiting. Likewise she held a hand out to Caliska when she noticed her. The price had already been stated so she either had it or she didn’t which meant she’d either get the egg or she wouldn’t. To the others who came after she had settled payment and passed out the eggs (Ly’on & Asha) she offered a woeful smile, ”Better luck next time, yeah?” While they’d likely think she meant their luck she really meant hers; next time she’d have to remember to only put out a few at a time and move spots so she could unload a number of “queen” eggs on unsuspecting folks.

After the crowd dispersed and she’d tucked her wages into a pouch she looked down at her outfit. She had tucked a nicer one back in her room, a lady couldn’t be expected to only wear one dress on a night like this! Aeslyn would change and then follow up with one of the handsome riders, one of them owed her a drink!

Adaya pocketed what was left of her marks, which wasn't much, before taking the little egg in both hands. Shay chirped at it, equal parts curious and wary, while the girl gave a small smile. She was going to add a new friend to her growing collection. Now she just had to get a bit of sand to put it in. Maybe a little pouch or a small basket that she could carry around with her...

That was it! With the egg cradled carefully in her hands, Adaya ducked back away from the stall and off to find a basket of just the right size.
__________________

Caliska watched as the others began taking eggs. When one was offered to her, she finally shook her head. No, not this time. She wasn't about to deal with a hatchling flit when the eggs on the sands were so close to hatching themselves. She wasn't going to have the time to handle both a hatchling flit and a hatchling wher. Not to mention the task of getting her wher used to her hound. That was a task in and of itself.

No, she walked away from the woman selling eggs. She could find a flit egg for far cheaper at the Weyr, if she wanted. They were pretty common, no point in spending so much on a single egg, especially when she wasn't really giving anyone the chance to choose.

Baria flashed a grin as Basasius finally caught up to her. "It's cheating if you use Jakol," she accused, but didn't scowl nor run him off. Instead, she dropped to give the 'howler love, scratching him behind the ears and slipping him a treat that she might or might not have begun keeping on her with the sole intention of tricking her husband's hounds into loving her. She thought herself very clever for it.

She passed the marks over without hesitation, accepting the egg and stashing it in a very unladylike fashion - In her bosom. A defiant look dared anyone to question her and she smirked at Basasius. "It's warm," she explained with a shrug. "Until we can get it a proper pot and sand." She didn't care what the little flit was. She wanted one, one was here, so she got it. It was simple as that!

Thanking the flit-vendor (@Ives) she bowed her head politely and turned in a flurry of skirts to orient on Basasius. She was firmly of the opinion that a Gather was for enjoying one's self. Business came every other hour of every other day. This was her chance to be irresponsible for once. Especially because it wasn't being hosted on their mark!

"I've made my purchase, let's see if we can't find you something worth buying, my Lord." She smiled at him, taking his arm with all the confidence due someone of her position.

--

Vatalian had accepted Eryonthi's invitation without hesitation, though he had (loudly) mourned the lack of marks he was making with his absence as a vendor proper. This was made up for by Vatask, whom had promptly declared that he would buy her something and that they would make marks at the next one.

Dressed in a vivid orange that matched his wher, Vatalian looked strangely at ease with the entire situation. It was dramatically different from the man's near constant studying of every other situation that anyone that knew him would have been puzzled by it... He knew gathers, however. And was dwelling fondly on the last one he'd attended...

Vatalian smiled. "The vendors, of course!" That was his solution to most inquiries about gathers. He had sold things here and there, or earned commission after a sort, and was over eager for Vatask to be grown so they could venture into the mines proper. He spoke about them like one did a long lost lover. Which was probably why he had no long lost lovers...

Vatask, adorned in her always present bejeweled collar, kept herself near the small group, having decided without any prompting that she was to guard them. Eryosk was her friend, which meant Eryonthi was, too. And Vatalian was a given.

"Rumor has it there is a smith here I used to work with that I would quite like to find again..." He peered over the crowds, searching for the man's banner.

Why yes, he was a handsome fellow. Sev'ren practically preened, not for a second thinking that the other rider might be called lovely, no, it was all him! He smiled proudly. "Why yes, I am." He said with a happy smirk and a small bow to her. It was the first one to ask her that finally drew her attention to the other man who had approached Oh, well in terms of lovely, he was also so. But still, he wanted that egg. "I'll take you for a drink." He wasn't sure if he got to say such things first or the other man had. He blinked and turned to him. "I wouldn't mind sharing the drink offer. though how then to decide who gets the egg?" He considered, rubbing at the dusting of beard at his face. Just let him have it, I don't want another flitt to claim you anyways. Rumbled through his head. Nonsense Varith, you love the tiny Jade, you would love to have another. He sent back. Jade cooed softly at the egg before landing beside it and staring at it in wonder, little claws about to go up and touch the gold of it. "Ah, Jade, no no." He said.

He was cooed at in contempt as the little green stared at the gold egg. He looked at the other man. "Hmm, I have a need for that shiny egg, how about I treat you both to a drink instead, if you'll let me snatch up this little one instead? Besides, the little precious one there is enamored." The green cooed at the egg, before looking back and forth at the other two there. "Or we could have some sort of contest?" He asked. The black sighed in his head. Sev'ren was used to getting what he wanted, and was ready to pay whatever the woman asked to buy the egg, though he was a generous man, and would fairly find a way to settle this if he had to.

Following the wedding, Rayna and Z'dyn had stuck together, at least for a little while longer. Until their gift could be given to the Lord and Lady holder. It was not a physical gift and therefore, it was necessary to seek the pair out at the Gather. Once this last bit of business was done, Rayna intended to puruse the stalls herself. Of course she rarely traded or made purchases unless so pushed by Couineth but there was something relaxing about the concept of purchasing anything that took her fancy. Her arm was linked with Z'dyn's as she spotted the Lord and Lady Holder.
"I hope they get the chance to use the gift," She said quietly.

The whole idea might have been a terrible one but she hoped it would be taken as intended, to show the Weyr's embrace of Crescent Hold. Rayna took a deep breath and planted a smile on her face, raising an eyebrow slightly at Z'dyn. He'd been holding up ok, everything considered. It was all a dance, after all, maintaining the facade for the Holders. Of course, she liked Z'dyn but their relationship was certainly not the one they were presenting. It was kind of nice to play pretend.

"Lord Callum, Lady Shuli," she greeted them with a slight bow of her head, "Congratulations and may you have every joy in the turns to come."
Shuli still looked wonderful and both their faces seemed to glow with the excitement of the day. She knew that Callum must have been feeling mixed emotions but she could only hope that he could enjoy the day.
"As a gift, the Weyr can offer very little except its riders. Therefore, we would like to offer the use of one of our riders to take you wherever you wish to go, at a time that suits you. A couple of days to yourselves, perhaps."

The Hold was able to use the riders for official business, of course, but this was different. It would give them the opportunity to travel anywhere on Pern. With a dragon and rider present, it was possible that they could return at short notice, receive news and also able take a day or two to relax and forget about their worries. After all, every material thing the Weyr owned had basically come from the Holds themselves. It didn't really make sense to re-gift a tithe.

This woman was going to be the death of him, he knew it. It was ultimately just assumed, at this point. Either by heart attack or exasperation.

He raised a brow at her, that sort of 'well then', but didn't otherwise do anything else but smirk at the choice of hiding place. A firelizard egg, officially getting fresher with his wife than he had yet to, and they were married. Scandelous.

Jakol was only too pleased to take the bribe - he knew His was somehow mated or otherwise bound to this woman, and she was sleeping in the same bed, thus, she was Also His. Not that the Icehowler wouldn't retract that loyalty in a fraction of a second if Basasius determined it necessary, but for now his master had no seeming objections to the beast being gifted a snack from the Lady Holder of Western.

"His nose is better than mine, unfortunately, and there are enough wonderfully-smelling things around that I fear I might end up a bit distracted."

He accepted the invasion of her arm against his without a second's hesitations, but ultimately balked at the premise of buying anything for himself. Basasius was a frugal man when it came to everything, and thus, he didn't want for anything he couldn't afford for himself. Pets were only so useful as their contributions, and he wasn't in the mood nor did he have the time to play creche-mother to some half-helpless creature. After all, even the pups of his hounds were kept with their bitch until they were on solid food.

"We'll look, but I hardly think there's anything I need here at the moment. Of course, unless you say otherwise."

He really hoped she didn't. He'd rather spend his money on her, than on himself.

@Captain

Z'dyn had largely been quiet. Usually was, in any publicly political situation - he was a former Drudge, after all. Politics of any kind were a bit foreign to him, and this was Rayna's much-longer-term expertise. Whatever she thought was acceptable, the Ironrider was happy to go with; they'd been friends for a while yet, and he liked looking out for her, but romantically inclined was unlikely to happen.

After all, she seemed much more involved with G'len, and Z'dyn had X'vir's pursuits to think about. Consider. Whathaveyou. He wasn't entirely sure what to think about the other man, truth be told, and he was still trying to work out the equation and such in his head when the thought occurred to him.

Needless to say, the fact his youngest was now a Candidate and out of his weyr had meant it happened a little more than usual, lately.

Either way, the current place and time wasn't the sort of location to let himself get distracted. It was important to stay on task, and he didn't speak with the Lord and Lady when he escorted Rayna over, content to let the more socially-apt Weyrwoman lead the conversation. He was more than content with simple introductions and the like - if it wasn't Wingleading, he admittedly didn't have a lot of experience with it.

Made him nervous, truth be told.

Removing the flowers and crown from Ebon had, luckily, been accomplished with little struggle, and he had been surprisingly patient with Callum's presence and assistance in stabling him... a good sign, Shuli thought. A simple water basin to wash any lingering dust or dirt from their hands had been all they needed before rejoining the Gather, and with Shuli's wedding dress not being the ostentatious affair some Ladies favored, she did not have to change out of it in order to walk among the crowds without difficulty. She smiled brightly at Callum at his words, replying, "I am glad to see such happiness at my new home... I only hope to bring equal happiness to you, my husband." She followed her words by leaning up on her tiptoes to plant a gentle kiss upon his lips.

Soon, the Lord and Lady Holder were intercepted by two people... the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader, Shuli found as they introduced themselves. "Weyrwoman Rayna, Weyrleader Z'dyn, the pleasure is all mine," Shuli said in greeting, after allowing Callum to speak first, as was proper for a Lady. She listened to Rayna speak, and again awaiting Callum's positive response, she added, "I thank you for such a kind gift, Weyrwoman. I look forward to positive interactions between our Hold and the Weyr, and welcome you to bring any issues you do not feel are vital enough to take Lord Callum's time to my attention."

After proper pleasantries and any further business had been discussed, Shuli and Callum parted company with the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader, allowing them to rejoin the Gather and enjoy their time. Lead by Callum, the pair soon came upon Lord Basasius and Lady Baria, and after Callum's introduction, Shuli said, "Lord Basasius, Lady Baria, it is truly a pleasure to meet you both. I look forward to continued partnership between our Holds. Now, Lord Basasius, I have heard you breed runners... some day I would certainly love to meet them, and perhaps have a ride with you and the Lady, if our schedules allow it, once my Ebon has settled down from all the excitement of the Gather." Noting the Icehowler nearby, she smiled down at it and asked, "Who might this handsome fellow be? May I pet him?"

Baria was all appropriate smiles and congratulations. "The pleasure is all mine. Welcome to the Western continent. I assure you that you do eventually get used to the trees." Baria winked, absolutely unashamed at the firelizard egg stuffed between her breasts. She stood with confidence, arm in arm with Basasius, though not at all leaning on him. She was Lady in her own right, and any affection for her husband was genuine, not some obligation of the rank.

She grinned almost childishly at the idea of a ride. "Basasius and I make a habit of having a picnic or leisurely ride once a sevenday. You'd be welcome to join us a time or two." Truth be told, it was their moment together and while Baria was loathe to invite others to intrude upon that moment, manners were manners and perhaps it could become something else. There was nothing saying she and Basasius couldn't find another way to get to know one another. Getting to know her fellow Lord and Lady was a worthwhile endeavor and a meeting every now and then in a relaxed environment would do them all some good.

Without warning, her blue burst from Between crooning happily at the sight of her and wrapped around her neck. She was slowly collecting a small fair and clearly enamored with the little flits. "I find if you bribe him," she fished treats from her pocket to offer Shuli, "He's willing to do anything." She was going to ruin Basasius' howler at this rate.

They would not be allowed time to themselves for a handful of candlemarks, such was the price of being someone of importance. Callum aided his wife in leading her stallion to the stables and for the briefest of moments it was just the two of them as they made their way back into the fray. Casting a sideways glance past the frame of his spectacles he breathed, ”You are stunning, my Lady.” Before she could acknowledge she’d heard him they were being met by an abundance of well wishers. Dalibor’s Weyrleaders found them first and Callum offered all the appropriate handshakes and welcoming smiles. ”Thank you Weyrwoman, Weyrleader. Your thoughtfulness is appreciated. I look forward to such a time when Lady Shuli can see the Weyr that so diligently protects us from Thread.”

He watched and listened as his bride played the role of Lady just as if she’d done so her entire life - of course he knew as well as any other of such bloodlines did that she had played such a role from the day she was born. Lessons, outings with older siblings and parents, high profile events during which a child’s curiosity was stifled in favor of being quiet and still; he’d gone through it all and then some given where his duties differed from hers. Squeezing her hand gently in his he beamed proudly as they continued along after their business with Dalibor’s leaders was done with. They did not get far before Lord Basasius and Lady Baria were before them and Callum was introducing Western’s Lord Holders to his new wife. She was quick to comment on the Lord’s runners and he could not help but smirk, ”I fear it is not long before she begins pushing to build out our stables to fit even more runners.” Shaking each of their hands he then leaned in briefly to press a kiss to Shuli’s temple. He would smother her in affection before the night was over if he had his way, not out of deep feelings for his bride but because he respected her and knew she deserved it. She was a breath of fresh air in Crescent whether she knew it or not. ”Once things have settled I’m sure we’d love to join the two of you for a ride.”

Basasius hated the political knifing that came with being polite. Offerings for things he hoped people wouldn't follow through with if they accepted it, time spent away from his home Hold and the responsibilities therein. He was, honestly, quite glad that Callum had found himself a fitting spouse to somewhat replace the former Lady Holder who had fallen ill and unfortunately passed. Shuli seemed respectable and pleasant, if a bit...well...typical for a Lady Holder. Worshipping her husband, all that sort, as if Callum walked on water and deserved nothing less. He wondered if he'd feel the same way, at such a loss, if Baria befell the same sort of fate - or, for that matter, if she would miss him, too, were he to unfortunately pass.

He tried not to linger on the thought, nor outwardly judge anyone else. He was certain other people would have something to say, if they knew he'd yet to consummate his espousal with his wife.

Holders were Holders for a reason, and he knew where the hierarchy was concerned, he'd be expected to remarry as well, if something did happen to his wife. Likewise, Baria would probably be sent a replacement husband if something were to happen to Basasius. Unfortunate for the council, as it were, he had no intention on either himself or Baria going anywhere, anytime soon. They'd pry his Lord Holder status and that of his wife's Ladyship from his cold, dead fingers.

Jakol was well-trained, and by default of his chosen hobby, Basasius knew more than a thing or two about runners. The likelihood, however, of him trashing his carefully-procured bloodlines on a whim from another person was as likely as Baria was to bear him a child before the next five turns. Only if there happened to be an accident, and even then, he'd take every precaution he could manage to make sure it didn't happen.

"I breed hounds, the runners are subjective," he corrected with no small amount of pride and self-worth. "It's a necessity when I hunt as much as I do, that I have good stock to keep up with my beasts." He looked sidelong at Jakol, who came to heel at his master's left side. "My pet Icehowler, his name is Jakol," he gently reached across and covered Baria's treat-holding hand with his own, drawing it down and over to his ribs. "I'm rather opposed to people not part of my family giving him - or any of my hounds - treats. Encourages poor habits and comforts with strangers, and then I run into another problem as my family did back home, when a poorly-informed drudge poisoned half our kennel mistakenly."

Baria was his wife, but his hounds were his hounds. The prior Gather was evidence that not everyone was permitted to deal with them, his wife being one of only a handful. They were worth an extensive amount of Marks, and that whole premise could be easily ruined if the wrong person got hold of them or managed to earn enough trust to poison them - something that unfortunately had happened in the past.

Paradise could be hell on Pern when one made enemies, after all.

"But beyond that, you're more than welcome to pet him. I certainly don't mind. He's rather fond of his ears being scratched." He settled his hand to Baria's arm, looped within his, as Jakol was wordlessly freed and the Icehowler waited for Shuli's gestures to invite him over for attention. "I'll need to gather another gelding first, at the moment the only one I have belongs to my wife, and the others are a broodmare and a stud."

Though she said nothing, Shuli was privately a bit taken aback by Baria's behavior... while Shuli wasn't exactly worldly (putting it mildly, considering she rarely left her home Hold or spent time with many people outside of her family or house drudges, at least until her trip to Crescent for this very wedding), she had never encountered a Lady quite like Baria, and the woman's brazen behavior (and her husband's apparent acceptance of it) was quite shocking to the young Lady Holder... was this how things were on the Western Continent? She would have to keep her eyes open... she did not want to abandon the years upon years of training she had gone through to be a proper Lady, but she also did not want to inadvertently embarrass Callum by being seen as a "Northern stick-in-the-mud" or the like...

"Indeed, it will take some getting used to," she replied to her fellow Lady's comment, "Though at least I still have the ocean nearby. Though it is strange, having land on three sides and water on only one, rather than water on three sides and land on only one like it is back in Tillek." It would, indeed, take some getting used to living on the edge of a bay, rather than on the tip of a peninsula, but the air still had that salty tang, so she wasn't completely out of her element... wasn't completely away from the place she called home her entire life. No, she thought to herself, This is home now. Remember that.

She smiled and nodded in response to Baria's acceptance of her idea of the four of them taking a ride together sometime, her smile carefully controlled and not shifting when Basasius injected reality into the situation regarding the availability of runners appropriate for riding. Her smile grew, however, when Callum kissed her temple and joked about her expanding his stables... THEIR stables... and replied with laughter inflecting her voice, "I will make a proper rider of you and the children soon, my husband," returning the kiss upon his cheek lightly.

She moved to grasp the proffered treat, then paused and carefully retracted her hand once Basasius covered and laid claim to Baria's extended hand. Nodding politely in understanding, she listened to him speak of his breeding, making sure to make enough eye contact for him to understand that she was listening to him, without making too much eye contact and making the interaction inappropriate or awkward... her lessons in this were clear, and she performed her role flawlessly as she always had during her practice runs in her Lady classes. "I would never imagine threatening your canines or their training, Lord Basasius," she replied to his words, "And I am sorry your kennels were threatened in the past. I do hope whoever was responsible was properly dealt with." Following Basasius' reply, whatever it was, Shuli knelt down carefully and extended one hand forward for the Icehowler to sniff, saying, "Hello, Jakol. You are a very handsome creature." If he approached, she would pet him carefully, giving particular attention to his ears as instructed.
