Upcoming Flights/Runs:

Upcoming Hatchings:

While not unnatural in its violence, the dual hatching of Copper Queens Laanasuth, and Zelsk, has brought many changes Pernwide to the Dragon Candidate program. Raising the Age of Candidacy, and laying more rigorous emotional requirements on those admitted into the program and permitted to stay after. Dalibor has settled into an easy peace with the hatching fading into memory and young dragonets and wherets visible as they come into their own.

Included in their ranks are two colours new to Pern. Indigo dragons, and Pink whers, as well as Dalibor's first instance of a dual-bonded Wherhandler. As always, the West seems eager to produce weirdness for the rest of Pern.

Curiously, a steady flow of messengers seem to be traveling between Grove and Dalibor Weyr during the early sevendays of the new season; which is already proving to be milder than some in Dalibor's recent history.

Name:
Drystan
Gender:
Male
Age:
20 (WI:198)
Sexuality:
Bisexual
Location:
Fork Hold > Hope Hold > Grove Weyr > Dalibor
Rank:
Drudge.

Personality:
Drystan is a quiet man, although he wasn't like this for most of his childhood. After losing everything except for his life he has become withdrawn, shying away from human touch and preferring to make grunts or other such noises to answer questions. He is standoffish and wary around other people and is also very distrustful around others. Despite this, he is seen as polite and can often be caught protecting those who don't have the means to do it themselves, although he goes back to ignoring them soon after once they're ok. Although he doesn't speak often he is very intelligent and has an almost perfect Eidetic memory, but it is not used much since he works as a Drudge now doing mostly manual labor on farmland. Underneath his quiet, blank exterior he is actually quite sarcastic and has a very dry sense of humor. He is very honest, bluntly so that it can sometimes be mistaken as mean, but in all actuality he just lacks a basic filter. He has a healer's heart thanks to his father and is often kind towards other in need and will help them even if it is detrimental to his own well-being. He is also a surprisingly good judge of character and makes a lot of his decisions based on his instincts (or gut-feeling), even going with his feelings when judging other people. He gets embarrassed very easily especially when flirted with and will choose to run away instead of dealing with those feelings. His loyalty is hard to get, especially due to his untrusting nature, but once had it is hard to shake (even if you really don't want it). His greatest weakness is any sort of math, and is awkward in most social activities. In regards to other people's opinions of him he mostly ignores it, not really caring about what other people thought. That was their issue, not his, so why worry about it? He is somewhat afraid of fire but only when it out of control. He will still be wary around, say, a candle however. He is also extremely afraid of Spinners (for some odd reason he's actually not really sure why he is scared of them he just is) and will freeze up if he sees one.

Appearance:
Drystan is rather on the tall side, standing at 6'1", nearly 6'2". He has a muscular build thanks to constantly working outside and sometimes in harsh conditions. He has medium length red hair that he usually keeps in a low ponytail with the right side of his bangs typically braided to keep out of his face. His skin is tan thanks to being under the sun so much, with any scars he has contrasting sharply with the darker skin. He has very distinct, bright green eyes. On his hip and part of his back and upper back is a large burn scar from when his house had been burning down. A few other scars dot his body, another distinctive one is a claw-like scar that stretching from his temple down his neck before stopping just below his collar bone (from his mother's sharp nails that purposefully scratched him as badly as she could). His hands are calloused from working and hard labor. His clothes are typically baggy and sometimes showing patches from when he had to fix them himself as he grew or they were ripped while working. Other than that his wardrobe would usually include anything comfy to relax in, though he does have a bit of a fascination with leather. He has a necklace on his person at all times, made by the collective effort by the entire family that has one thing that each family member liked. Each family made five necklaces that all looked identical. Drystan typically wears wrapped around his wrist, but when he sleeps it's around his neck. It's simple leather with a fish scale (sister), a pretty stone (brother), a piece of wood (mother), a feather (him), and a small shell (father) on it. Drystan cherishes the necklace and he is never seen without it.

History:
Drystan was born in Fork Hold under his mother Aistanvin and father Drygalne. His mother was a craftsperson, often staying at home while his father was a healer who often went with Trading Caravans to offer his services. For the first six years of his life it was relatively normal, staying home with his mother while his father occasionally left to accompany Trading Caravans. Drystan, as a young child, was fascinated with his father's line of work and often begged his father to teach him some of what he did. His father, a kind and gentle soul, rarely ever denied his son the chance to learn the healing arts and often gave Drystan some 'homework' whenever he had to leave the house. Drystan was a diligent student and did his best to make his father proud. Then, at age six, Drystan gained a sister. She was loud and fussy but he immediately loved her. As a baby, Aine was often watched over by Drystan who now split his time between learning and taking care of Aine, which his mother was relieved and thankful for. Aine was quite the handful, but Drystan didn't mind. He wanted to be the best big brother there ever was and he took his job very seriously.

When Drystan turned nine he was allowed to come along with his father on his trips. He was a bit apprehensive, worried about Aine and his mother, but he was assured that Aine was big enough to not need constant watching over and that his mother was more than capable of taking care of Aine (after all she was the mother. So from then on Drystan would occasionally go with his father on his trips, observing and learning his father's line of work. But then, two years later another addition to the family came along. A baby brother named Galvin. Drystan, now eleven years old, adored his more quiet baby brother who preferred to just silently watch the world around him with big, wondering eyes. Aine also adored her baby brother, relieved to no longer being the youngest and smallest. Between the two of them, and their parents, Galvin was surrounded by love. Drystan took up the mantel of even better big brother with now two younger siblings to worry about, and he handled it with pride.

But then, tragedy struck the family. During one of his trips with his father, now thirteen years of age, they were with a trader caravan leaving the Fork Hold when they strayed too close to wild Whers territory. The Whers were, of course, not happy about this at all. The group was struck by a couple of the creatures, Drystan having fled to hide immediately. His father yelled at him to run, run back to safety. Drystan always listened to his father, because his father was smart, and he ran. With the Whers busy with the larger group of people, Drystan returned to the hold they had just left alone. Later on it was confirmed that the entire group had perished, and Drystan had been the only survivor. Stuck in a state of shock and despair, he hardly remembered the trip back home. Confronting his mother to tell her what had happened, he broke down in their house with only his siblings as his mother left them to lock herself in her room. After that, their family changed. Drystan's mother became closed off, leaving her children to all but fend for themselves. She grew angry, soon coming to the conclusion that it was Drystan's fault that her husband was dead. She often took her rage out on him, sometimes even tried to do the same with the younger children but Drystan always got in the way. He refused to let any harm come to his siblings because he was still the best big brother. This lasted for two years before his mother took a turn for the worst. Her children reminded her of her husband, now dead, and one night was the worst episode the children had ever seen. Drystan went to bed weary of his mother's actions, and when he awoke abruptly it was to the smell of smoke. Leaving his room he was greeted with roaring flames flickering in the hall. Immediately he thought of his siblings and ran to their room, hearing their crying. He tried to open the door, but it had been jammed. He remembered that his mother's room might have something to help open the door, so he ran there next, only to be caught by surprise by his own mother to lunged for him. They crashed down onto the floor, his mother spitting and screaming at him. There was a fury and madness in her eyes that terrified Drystan as they fought on the floor of the house. Drystan only managed to knock her off when he grabbed one of their vases and smashed it onto her head, knocking her out. He kicked her off of him and quick ran to his siblings room, only to find a fallen beam in front of the door now and utter silence. Finding it difficult to breathe now and with the flames growing stronger he returned to his mother, only to be separated by more fire that he couldn't pass. Lost, terrified, and growing woozy he managed to escape the house, only to watch it collapse soon afterwards. He was alone now, and lost consciousness.

When he regained consciousness he took one look at the still smoldering husk of what had been his home and ran, going into hiding from the people in his Hold. He was smart, he knew what this looked like, and he doubted it would end well for him. He hovered around to listen for what the people thought and it was as he expected; he was being blamed for the murder of his family. He knew whose fault it was, his mother had admitted to starting the fire in her half-crazed state when they were wrestling on the floor of the burning house, but he doubted anyone would understand that. He had no proof, nothing to say that the dead woman in his house was the true culprit besides his own words. Afraid for his life and with a heavy heart, he decided he would just have to leave. With only the clothes on his back and a necklace that was made by the whole family, he kept to the outskirts of the Hold, laying in wait for a Trading Caravan to come around that he could sneak away with. He lived in the shadows, hungry and tired and grieving still, barely holding himself together. After managing to find one Caravan he snuck away from his Hold, his home, and struck out with the Trading Caravan. He offered to be their Healer with what medical knowledge he knew as long as he got to stay with them. They accepted and being with them he improved his medical knowledge as they traveled.

It wasn’t until they reached Hope Hold that he decided to stop and stay in one place for a while. A new face and unrecognized by anyone he signed on as a Drudge, unable to do much else beside manual labor. He worked on the farmland for most of his time there, building up muscle that he never had to use before until now as he worked. He was often plagued by nightmares of fire and mad eyes, the worst being unbearable heat and utter silence where he should’ve been able to hear his siblings. He often fell asleep and woke up in tears, mourning for his lost family, feeling hollow from the loss. Insomnia became his new best friend as he got very little sleep. He hardly knew how to cope with so much loss but he did the best he could, searching for distractions and finding it mostly in the work that was given to him. He very rarely thought about his mother, still shocked at what her grief had pushed her to do. He struggled and tried to understand why she had done such a thing, but thinking of her only left him feeling more tired. Throwing himself into his work he worked until he was tired enough to not have nightmares at night from sheer exhaustion. It was here that the massive storm of Thread fell, devastating the land of Pern. Drystan got lucky, although he had half hoped that he would get caught in everything, the wound of his family’s deaths still so fresh. He thought perhaps he could see his siblings or father again, still unsure about his mother, but came to understand that his siblings wouldn’t want him to be with them for such a stupid reason. He grew more reclusive after that and threw himself into his work on the mostly destroyed farmlands of the South, going about it silently. He stayed there for four years before wanting to leave, desperate for something more to due. Once again he hid on the outskirts of the Hold and waited for a Trading Caravan. The process repeated and this time he got off to stay in Grove Weyr.

Still a Drudge he signed on for work once more, performing whatever menial labor needed to be done. He mostly did farmwork, as he was one of the rare few that was healthy enough and physically fit enough to do more than what the normal drudgery do. Still he accepted any work he could get his hands on to keep distracting himself; laundry, dishwashing, the usual farmwork, and the like. While he was working, building up whatever transcript he could have, Dalibor came to Grover for an expedition, until an illness suddenly began to spread. Drystan was one of the many who caught the illness, choosing to isolate himself in an attempt to help stop it from spreading, at least from him. He was ill for a long time, often struck with heavy fever and hallucinations as his nightmares grew more frequent and nightmarish, and even now he says that it was one of the worst things he had ever experienced, but by luck once more he survived. As one of the few who survived he managed to help the expedition gather some of the beneficial flora they had discovered, though he was strictly limited in what he was allowed to do. Carrying and gathering (since he tended to farm fields and had medical knowledge he knew how to handle flora very well) was the extent of what he had been permitted to help with. While working he caught snippets of what Dalibor was like and it greatly appealed to him. It sounded like a good place and perhaps even better a place far away from the South where old memories still haunted him. For once he saw an opportunity to get away and escape to a fresh new place where he could start over completely new, even if it was just being a Drudge, especially since he technically ran away from his Hold that would have exiled him anyway. With an actual goal after five long years he appealed to be transferred to Dalibor as a Drudge Transfer after staying in Grove for a year. It was accepted, and he was then transferred to Dalibor, a journey that was not as hard as he had thought it would be, but at this point he didn't find a lot of things hard, especially when it came to moving to a new place. Now in a new Hold so far away from his homeland he feels a tentative hope to be in a better place, away from dark memories of a time that feels like forever ago. He is unsure of what he can do, having been a Drudge for so long he’s not sure what else he can do besides that, but he hopes that perhaps Dalibor can give him a new goal, a purpose for his life to at least keep going and survive. He had seen the Dragon Riders throughout his life and seeing them now he couldn’t help but hope and wish that he could be a part of them.
