Upcoming Flights/Runs:

Upcoming Hatchings:

While not unnatural in its violence, the dual hatching of Copper Queens Laanasuth, and Zelsk, has brought many changes Pernwide to the Dragon Candidate program. Raising the Age of Candidacy, and laying more rigorous emotional requirements on those admitted into the program and permitted to stay after. Dalibor has settled into an easy peace with the hatching fading into memory and young dragonets and wherets visible as they come into their own.

Included in their ranks are two colours new to Pern. Indigo dragons, and Pink whers, as well as Dalibor's first instance of a dual-bonded Wherhandler. As always, the West seems eager to produce weirdness for the rest of Pern.

Curiously, a steady flow of messengers seem to be traveling between Grove and Dalibor Weyr during the early sevendays of the new season; which is already proving to be milder than some in Dalibor's recent history.

A few evening after the other two wherlings went out on patrols it was Eryonthi's turn. It was not necessarily a difficult task to find a second handler to go out with Tariv and Eryonthi, more so a slight waiting game. Once Vessa had a free evening to pick up another patrol route she let the him know and now he was heading out of the barracks to prepare his charge for her evening. She was the youngest of the wherlings in the Slate Class and also one from a vastly different background. After ensuring she had eaten her evening meal he led her across the weyrbowl, ”If there is an incident I hope you will be able to keep your pet under control.” He’d allowed her to keep the icehowler with her in the barracks simply because it was something she was accustomed to and it was well trained. She’d been using the icehowler to help her get around the world - now that she had a wher he knew she’d been focusing more on using her wher’s sight to give her back the ability to see the world around her to a degree.

”You’ll be joining the Prideleader of Epsilon Pride, Vessa, as well as a priderunner from Bravo Pride named Tariv. They will be able to answer any questions you might have about your role upon graduation. Be sure to use your own senses as well as Eryosk’s to stay alert. Pay attention to where they take you and anything they feel is important enough to share with you.” His pace was brisk and soon they were at the meeting point. Vessa greeted the rather serious looking man with a grin, waving excitedly the moment she spied them coming across the bowl. Vessk was busy pawing at the ground - no doubt trying to investigate a tunnelsnake hole without digging up the ground to do so - but she paused and looked up at their arrival.

Swisk looking stronger all time. The green complimented the blue and made her way over to nudge him gently with her head. She was an affectionate sort and didn’t mind showing it. After she’d finished greeting the blue she moved towards the younger cyan, bouncing on her front legs excitedly. Eryosk ready to go? Eryosk’s excited?

”Well then, seems Vessk is excited to get going. I’m Vessa, nice to meet you. Hope you’re not nervous, Tariv and I won’t let anything happen to you.” Glancing at the greenhandler that would be going out with them she kept her smile as she lifted her glow basket, ”I see you have an icehowler, I’ve heard when they are trained well they make great pets. Is that true?”

Turning she began leading the way out of the Weyr, Vessk falling in to the left of the wherling to ensure nothing could come at her from the side. Just in case.

New wherlets! New wherhandler! Gonna be much fun, Tarisk's. Tarisk nudged her handler, being as supportive as she could. It had been her idea; indeed, Tarisk had taken the initiative by telling Swisk that they would go the next time she had run into the blue. Tariv was stuck and wouldn't pull out now that they were volunteered. He was too loyal to his fellow wherhandlers to do so.

The pair trotted across the weyrbowl to meet up with the wherling as well as the wherling master and their fellow trainer. He gave all three a nod in greeting, not wanting to interrupt as they spoke. He crossed his arms, watching them and waiting for his turn. Tarisk, however, was not as polite.

Hello! Am Tarisk! Good meet Eryosk, she cheered, prancing over and snuffling to get the cyan's scent. She was tempted to invade personal spaces but a mental command from Tariv kept her from getting unreasonably close. Hello Swisk. Hello Vessk. Good night! She gave a rough chirrup at the two in further greeting.

"Good evening Swithin, Vessa, Eryonthi," Tariv finally said once there was a break in the conversation. "Tarisk and I will be taking care of anything you need." This last comment was directed to the wherling, Tariv giving him another polite nod. He took the right side when they began their patrol, flanking the new pair for protection.

Eryonthi was nervous. Her classmates had already been on patrols and it seemed to go well, but that hadn't done much to lessen her nerves. Everyone had been very accomidating about her sight ever since she'd come and even more since bonding with Eryosk. Yet, she couldn't help but worry that she would fail or lag behind her classmates. Or that after graduation she would only be a burden to the people who had done so much to help her. She wanted to do well and prove she could do this on her own. Well, on her own with Eryosk and Silmaug.

To this end, she spent most of her time between lessons with her wher, bonding and practicing sharing sight. It was wonderful to be able to see again, but it was also strange and sometimes difficult. It was hard to focus enough to keep the images in her mind and Eryosk saw things much differently than she did. She would never complain though. This was much better than the endless blackness she had grown used to before. Silmaug helped too. While she mostly practiced with her wher, she kept up the icehowler's training as well and his loving companionship was always a help. She was relieved when she had been allowed to bring them both on this patrol. This would be a test of just how well she could do this and she was determined not to let anyone down.

Eryonthi nodded as Swithin explained the evening's lesson, very grateful to have both Eryosk and Silmaug at her side. Eryosk, as always, walked in front, letting Eryonthi hold her tail for direction. Eventually, with more practice, the physical contact would be less important, but for now the contact helped a lot. Silmaug walked at her side, providing moral support and an extra set of senses just in case.

Eryosk greeted Vessk with an enthusiastic nod. Eryosk always ready! she declared with determination. Leaning down, she added in a private whisper. Eryosk's nervous. But try hard! she confided. She was confident her handler would do well though. She just need a little nudge now and then to remind her of what she could still achieve.

"Thank you, Prideleader Vessa," Eryonthi said politely, trying not to give away her nerves in her voice. Vessa sounded like a good person, which helped her relax a little. Her grip tightened on Eryosk's tail and the cyan nudged her encouragingly. "I will do my best," she added hurriedly. She certainly didn't want to slow them down. Silmaug woofed in agreement and greeting and Eryonthi smiled despite herself. "Yes, Silmaug is very well trained. He will not be any trouble." She patted him firmly as if to assert this fact.

Eryosk alerted her to Tariv's approach and she turned to nod to him as well. "Thank you, Handler Tariv," she greeted with a shy smile. At least she wouldn't have to worry about being safe. Between Eryosk, Silmaug and these two handler pairs, she was probably one of the safest people in the Weyr right now.

Once introductions were done, Eryonthi took a deep breath and took her place between the two senior handlers. "Silmaug. Heed." she ordered, and the ice howler dutifully took up a place behind her while Eryosk once more lead the way. She tried to focus on the sight her wher shared as well as the sounds and smells around her, but it was a lot to take in. How could she sort out which sounds were hers and which were Eryosk's? She went in silence for some time until Eryosk nudged her mind. This was a lesson after all, she need not hold back on her questions.

Truthfully, Eryonthi was not used to asking questions. Usually the elders told her to be silent, listen, and learn. But here, questions were encouraged, expected even. So many differences that seemed small until she was right on top of them. "Do you," she began tentatively. "Do you always patrol in pairs?" An easy question seemed like a good idea to start.

If Vessa noted the wherling's nervousness she didn't show it. There were plenty of things the girl could do as a handler - seeing was one of those things. It wasn't perfect and would take getting used to, she knew this because she'd gazed through Vessk's eyes any number of times, but it was something. Something was better than nothing. They left the safety of the Weyr's walls and though she was on high alert she was capable of answering questions and conversing. ”It depends on the route we’re patrolling and how things have been going. Sometimes the Weyr is on higher alert than others, be it a rise in feline sightings or some of the more difficult wilds.” Vessa was more than happy to answer the younger girl’s questions, the best way to learn something you weren’t sure about was to ask. ”The routes inside the Weyr or close to the Weyr walls aren’t usually done in pairs like this though. There are a pair but they start on opposite ends of the route and they cross in the middle to share information before continuing on to go over the route the other handler and wher already walked.”

Vessk had a bounce in her step as they walked along, keeping an eye on their charges as she went. Be liking Dalibor? Far from the most intelligent of whers the green could read Vessa’s thoughts well enough. The wherling with them was not weyrbred, nor holdbred. She’d come from someplace far away that was completely different than the Weyr that she and Hers now called home.
